  1. Billions! on NY Bill Proposes Fat Tax On Games, DVDs, Junk Food · · Score: 1

    From TFA:

A bill currently before the New York Assembly would add a one-quarter of one percent tax to the sale or rental of video games and video game hardware. (It is estimated that the) bill would raise $50 million in revenue.

The scary thing is that this means that something like $200 billion are being spent on movies, games and junk food. That's a whole lot of money.

Do these titles hurt the social standing of gamers and gaming as a medium?

Yes, I think they do. I more or less gave up games when my old C64 conked out and I couldn't play Elite anymore (yes, I know...I'm looking into DOSbox). My point is, this current trend of violent games just makes non-gamers wonder what the f**k is up with 'kids today', even if the 'kids' are adult. Your average Joe probably doesn't know that these games are not for minors, and just sees another example of the world going to hell.
Also, it must be said, there is enough REAL violence in the world without churning out even more, albeit 'only' virtual violence. Perhaps once in a while a genuinely psychotic individual might find an outlet for their anger or whatever in a game rather than real life, but that argument can be used to justify kiddie porn and all sorts of crap.
As you've probably guessed these games do nothing for me at all...personally I prefer something more intellectual or thought-provoking... and I'm afraid I do (like so many others) look at some of these games and the people who play them and just ask WHY?

Keep in mind what was going on at the time: The religion of Mithra was growing in the West; the Gnostics were a force to be reckoned with in Egypt; and the followers of the 1st Century BC Yeshu(a) the Nazar were slowly morphing into the so-called Christians.

Ah, I remember it well. It seems like only yesterday.

A/C 1 and 2, yes you're both right (this is me being contrite) that osmosis is the passage of water, not the salt. I am in my 50s, so I haven't covered this stuff for some 30 years since I was at school, and of course at my age I'm probably going Gaga anyway!
Chuk is also correct about the book lungs which most spiders have. From the Wikipedia page:-

A book lung is a type of respiration organ used for atmospheric gas exchange and is found in arachnids, such as scorpions and spiders. Each of these organs is found inside a ventral abdominal cavity and connects with the surroundings through a small opening. Book lungs are not related to the lungs of modern land-dwelling vertebrates. Their name describes their structure. Stacks of alternating air pockets and hemolymph-filled tissue gives them an appearance similar to a "folded" book. Their number varies from just one pair in most spiders to four pairs in scorpions. Sometimes the book lungs can be absent and the gas exchange is performed by the thin walls inside the cavity instead, with its surface area increased by branching into the body as thin tubes called tracheae. It is possible that the tracheae have evolved directly from the book lungs, because in some spiders the tracheae have a small number of greatly elongated chambers.

They breathe through their skin via osmosis and not via lungs.

Sorry to be pedantic, but spiders do not breathe by osmosis! Osmosis is a mechanism (normally involving liquids) where salts can pass through a semi-permeable membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, to achieve equelibrium.
Spiders (and insects etc) actually breathe through small holes in their sides called spiracles. These lead to small air-tubes (brachia?) which run throughout the body. The air is moved around the body by the normal movements of the animal. If you watch a spider or insect at rest you can see it 'pulsing' slightly. It is this action which allows it to respirate.

Frameset layouts were a nightmare in many ways and their passing is a good thing, but using an i-frame to show some or all of a separate webpage on the page you are viewing can be very useful, and is perfectly kosher in terms of valid HTML and CSS as far as I know.

While the reviewed book sounds useful, I got my first real understanding of CSS from "CSS-The Missing Manual" by David Sawyer McFarland (O'Reilly). This book probably goes into more detail than the reviewed book, but keeps it simple and keeps it fun. Also there is plenty of on-line support and referencing. Before, my CSS was patchy but this book brought together all the loose threads really well. I'm sure it would also be of great help to those with little or no experience of CSS.
