Glad to hear Congress is listening to and believing sleazeballs from the porn industry blowing sunshine up their collective legislative butts. It's a shame we can't make congresscritters refer to an unbiased (hahahahahaha) technical agency who can tell them when these kinds of things are full of it.
Sorry, but the average 1Tb RAID I've worked with over the last 5+ years (I work for a vendor) has had way more than 8 points of failure in the whole RAID. Would your proposal be more redundant/resiliant? Yes. Would it also be more expensive, since you're putting a hardware raid controller in the box? Seems likely. So there's a trade off to be had. Personally, for its simplicity, I think it's a good (though probably still overpriced) solution. YMMV.
You are still not getting it. Yes, it appears as one volume. Buy another one. It also appears as one volume. Mirror them together. Voila! RAID! $2400 for 1 Tb mirrored is still a damn good deal.
BTW since I forgot to mention it; no I don't think that medication is the right answer. I don't think medication is the right answer for much of psychological problems; our society is way overmedicated. Nonetheless, this thing they call ADHD does have to be dealt with in some fashion, even if it is overused as an excuse for kids behaving badly. I agree it's not a disease, but it's not just "bad parenting" either.
Funny. I was raised well before the whole ADHD thing became the scourge du jour of youth, my parents didn't get me any twitch games (um, I barely was allowed to play our off-brand Pong), and very little TV. Nonetheless I exhibited a lot of the classic symptoms; I was able to not be *completely* disruptive of class *most* of the time, but I very definitely was not paying attention, wandering around the classroom when I should have been doing work, etc. and I definitely had a lot of issues trying to interact with my peers.
So splain me how I was a victim of my parents poor parenting skills again? The only person playing a "blame game" here seems to be you.
Because after all, we haven't been doing RAID for a long time now. Oh wait, doesn't RAID mean Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks?
Come on, it certainly has its reliability concerns, but if you mirror one to another, where's the difference between this and two racks of smaller disks? Seems to me that 4 points of failure on each side of the mirror rather than a dozen or two could actually HELP reliability.
Is there any reason he cannot install his old OS on the new machine? I'm still running Win98 SE on my Windows box, and regardless of M$'s support status, it works just fine...for windows.
Hey I didn't say it was a great idea, or to "suck it up", but if the alternative is either to get wanded in the corner or take my shoes off now, the answer is easy.
So take the damn shoes off and run them through the metal detector then. Damn, I have metal in my shoes, and as long as I do that when I'm flying, it doesn't slow me down in the slightest.
I suppose we should rename this to "Morons ask slashdot", given the really basic nature of several of the last dozen or so.
Have you ever had critical infrastructure managed by an outsourced company? Like your network, your printers, your mailroom? I only have a single datapoint, but when it was done here, the network was an unmitigated disaster within a few weeks, and we ended up re-sourcing the job ourselves to get back to any semblance of "normal" connectivity.
People high up in the management chain don't seem to think through all the consequences of their actions--they see a short term savings, they accept blind assurances that everything will be the same or better without thinking "how do they do it cheaper then?", and things come crashing down. The same thing is going to happen more widely, it just hasn't gotten there yet.
I disagree. I'm quite comfortable with PC's generally, and Photoshop in particular. The Gimp does all the same stuff, but puts it all in somewhat significantly different places in a significantly different style of interface. That makes The Gimp about twice as hard for me as Photoshop, so unless I'm at work on a Unix box with no Photoshop as an option, I just work in Photoshop.
Obviously this is partly familiarity with The Gimp, but it's also a user interface issue--if it was a truly intuitive user interface it wouldn't be hard to find a given function once you know what function it is you want to use.
Kiplinger's Tax Cut even says on the front "no product activation required". Given that TaxCut and TurboTax have been the de facto standards for years, and H&R Block partners with Kiplinger's, it's a no brainer.
If it's a quick "I would like an answer to this question" type thing, why the hell should I have to go downstairs, spend 10 seconds talking to her, and walk back upstairs? Who said I needed to spend any money on a gym? Sorry, you seem to have confused the idea of "instant messaging" with "real conversation", which I am quite capable of having with her face to face any and all times it is necessary. I even walk to where she is to do it! Nimrod.
And then demoted for using invented words? :-)

You must not do much with sendmail....

When the previous article came along, I saw a handful of the expansion kits on EBay too....

Did I not say "mirror one to another"? As in one Tb to the other. Duh.

$50 to be able to use iDVD without a superdrive doesn't seem like an enormous cost....
You're not paying much attention, are you? It doesn't have all the "pro" features, but then it doesn't sound like you're using them.
Is there any reason he cannot install his old OS on the new machine? I'm still running Win98 SE on my Windows box, and regardless of M$'s support status, it works just fine...for windows.
'cos you know, a mini-itx fits in your pocket. Makes a GREAT substitute.
Ex-Term-In-Ate!!!

I just want a copy of the logo. For circle slash treatment, of course!
Look honey, Joe's watching the Paris Hilton video again!

Because after all, the Linux mantra is "why just implement, when you can re-implement!"
frist spot?

Exactly. Using ICQ when I'm upstairs and my wife's downstairs is way better than shouting up/down the stairs. Especially when the baby's sleeping.
