The Law of Moses (given to Moses oddly enough) was kind of training wheels for people that couldnt stay focused enough for the higher law. In effect, they were given a lot of pointless rules that had no other meaning than to remind them who was in charge. The whole clean/unclean animals bit was part of that. Also, the law of Moses does not start at the beginning of the Bible, it starts with Moses. Before then they had a higher law as well, but screwed up. With the resurection of Christ, the old lower law was removed and the higher law was reinstated.
Some things in the law of Moses therefore dont apply, ie eating pork, but somethings that are part of both laws do, ie no murder.
There is a difference between the theory of evolution and the principle of natural selection.
The theory is based on the idea that all life forms on the planet developed through *random* natural selection, while natural selection is the response of an organism(s) genes to external stimuli. I personally believe that God works through natural laws, although often higher laws than we yet know. Thus I believe in intelligent design through *focused* natural selection.
Evolution and religion are not always mutually exclusive.
Im not sure I understand everything you said, but in general a dirty bomb would need to be concentrated enough that it wouldnt just disperse and dilute itself when set off. The real danger is, wait for it, the terror and panic of the people (thats where the name t-e-r-r-o-r-i-s-t comes from...) Just hearing that there was "nuclear material" in the bomb that went off down town would cause mass panic and chaos. I wouldnt be surprised to see more death/destruction from the rioting trying to get out of town then the actual bomb itself. In that way, even a weak dirty bomb that could be made from this type of cake is STILL a WMD.
But lets just move along. Nothing to see here. Ignore it cause it at least somewhat vindicates Bush and the invasion. We can't allow that now can we?
At work today someone asked me if a 64 bit dual core 2.2ghz system with 4gb ram was enough to print a membership directory with pictures of 500 members. Then she asked if it was enough to send email.
I have a certain textbook that I will be using for a few more quarters in school that is well over 1000 pages. Ive already paid for it, and used it for one quarter, but I have been looking for something more conveinent. I decided to digitize it and put it on my EEE as a pdf and just dump the book. Chopping the bind off cost a buck at a local printing place, and I bought a scanner on ebay with an automatic feeder to scan it at high speed. Looks like I might be able to save some time and just resell the scanner.:)
I would MUCH rather buy a copy protected pdf of my books than a hard copy. IMO that is what they need to put on the "bonus" cds that I never touch.
My brother got a mac a while back. He was in love with it for a while and talked about how much better it was and the quality of components etc etc.
Within 3 month he had sent it back to the shop for replacement of defective parts not just once, but 3 times. Between the 5 other systems in the family and 15 years of owning computers I have only ever had one completely defective part, a power supply. He held out saying it was superior for a while, but now he just built himself a new machine and is running good ol' windows.
So much for anecdotal evidence that macs are superior quality. IMO its all about the coolness factor.
Thats partly because they are the only major news network that has even a slight lean to the right. there arent many options to choose from. People that like fox dont like watching the others, while people that watch the others dont like fox. In order to attract viewers from the other side then the entire network bias would have to be changed, not just the quality of the newscasters.
Anyone else read through that and wonder if anyone really uses those or if they are just crap the editors made up? In all my time online gaming/chat rooms/forums Ive never come across any of those.
Very very wrong. Addiction to crack is not just a psychological effect where they enjoy it so much they just want more. It is a chemical dependancy in which your body simply dosnt function properly without the drug. For some of the harder drugs then quitting cold turkey can actually be fatal.
Addiction to behaviors, ie gambling, pornography, gaming, exercise, is different, but that doesnt mean its any less serious. People have died from them as well.
DNA already does a pretty good job vindicating the wrongfully accused, and contrary to what you might expect there aren't very many of them. I dont recall the name of the site, but I recently had to do a report about the death penalty in college and one of the sources I found was a watchdog site that helped people on death row get exonerated. They had a list of all the people across the country who had been released from death row due to DNA testing and it was under 100 in the past 15 years. I dont have links because it was in the colleges academic library, but I also found an interesting report about the amount of people applying for DNA testing and the costs/time it takes to complete them. Only small portion of those who applied for the testing were actually innocent, the rest were just trying to stall and buy time because they knew they were guilty. Open fingerprinting testing and you would likely get the same result. As you say, the swamping of crime labs.
I dont think this is going to change very much when it comes to old cases. New cases maybe, but its not as accurate as DNA and so I think that will still lead when it comes to unsolved/wrongfully convicted cases.
I don't really get a lot of spam (cause I'm just that good at hiding) but when I do I, of course, dont read it. So I wonder how you guys expect the "customers" to get mad at the company when the usual course for spam is to be deleted unopened and so they dont see anymore than "VACATIONS-R-US" subject line. They wouldn't know WHO to be mad at for any single particular peice of spam.
The use of the word "bugging" infers that others can listen and understand what is being said. From the abstract all they can do is identify parts that might be interesting. There is a big difference there.
I know google is soon going to dominate us and is turning into our Overlord, but I would like to see gmail release a dedicated client that can only sync with gmail and all the other google services. I dont mean like desktop, i dont like that. But I currently use on my system sunbird set up with gcaldaemon to sync my calender to google and just use regular gmail for email. They released Picassa (IMO the best free picture manager) and integrated that with the online albums, and then there was the google docs offline mode. Where is my gmail and google calander offline mode?
with tor and freenet then you can rest assured that a large portion of the traffic is illegal. I set up tor once and about half of all the material in the tor network that i saw was links and references to child porn. Not something I want to be associated with. I can only assume that most of the time when people want "transmission without censorship and complete annomnity" then it is something illegal or immoral. There isnt much need for complete annomnity to send a video of your kids soccer game to grandma.
I know there are some legit uses for stuff like Tor, (in fact I plan on trying it again to get past my schools port blocks on IMs) but I dont think that is the main usage.
Before complaining about deaths from actual accidents, lets start reducing deaths from alcohol related car crashes-which happen to far exceed anything trains or planes could come up with.
I was going to post the same thing, but you beat me to it. Really obvious IMO
Way off topic, but he asked...

Or even the free irfanview has a batch process for scanning if you have the hardware.

I think thats a good piece of advice most ./ers should follow.

I took an unpopular stance on ./ :(

It is odd how Apples default browsers security hole is turned into a problem for Microsoft. I didn't even think there was a Windows version of Safari.
The reason smart kids have problems in in school is because of stupid teachers, hostile peers, poor motivation, and boredom.
In the public school system it really is.

I think the sledge would end up taking longer. This is slashdot, he would need a breather every 15 seconds.

"process of liquid water"
Last I checked liquid water is called ice, is a noun not a verb, and the only materials that need to be present for it are hydrogen and oxygen.

Pitiful that this got modded insightful.
