Nonsense. I have a client who has a mixed Office 2k3 and office 2k environment. For some reason Powerpoint slides from Office 2k won't open on the Office 2k3 PCs.
Also, the nefarious TNEF encoding bug is the most ridiculous thing in the history of email. Even Outlook Express won't open those nasty Outlook TNEF encoded attachments.
MS has only one reason for deliberately breaking compatibility between their own apps (and they regularly do). Do I have to spell it out ?
I'm sorry, but either your lying or you need to find a new job. I know *NO* self-professed programmers who would tolerate a non-NT version of Windows on their computers.
How in the name of all that's holy did Star Trek Enterprise survive so many seasons while Firefly got cancelled and the excellent BSG only had 15 episodes made.
They should do simultaneous release to DVD as the episodes air... Ok, one can hope:)
Ok, the two significant things to note here is that the US seems to be increasingly asserting more power over space. The next step is probably going to be a bill that allows the US to shoot down any "illegal" objects in geostationary orbit above US soil.
I agree. Autonomous Offroading might have military applications for ensuring the next US invasion only has collateral damage on the Enemy's side...
This money can be much better spent developing similar applications whereby urban congestion can be relieved by enforcing "Autonomous Zones". i.e. once you're off the highway, your can goes into Autonomous mode to negotiate the congested city streets.
Exactly! Then I get a double-coating of diamond for my PSP, blue-coloured diamond contacts to go with my brown eyes, pimp-my-mouth with ultra-Bling, and REALLY wear diamonds on the soles of my shoes!
Yes! It's the dawning of the age of the diamondsexual male!
Oh bugger... I need to get my head checked. For a moment there I thought someone was trying to revive the Internet Boom-time with an internet-enabled handkerchief.
If the rise of internet commerce is anything to go by, we can expect that the only reasons people will go to space will be to smoke Weed, Gamble the kids' college fund away, and of course have weighless sexual escapades.
Unfortunately you traditionally need the blessing of Sony themselves to develop games for their platform. I wonder how much this right-to-code will cost for the PSP.
OSDN along with a whole bunch of other supposedly "community"-oriented websites Sold Out the Community a long time ago when they started to take Microsoft's money to critisize the very "Community" which they supposedly serve.
Singapore's FTA with the US came into affect on 1st Jan. It looks like the US is making it a matter of policy now to ram the DMCA down trade partners' throats. See here: http://news.com.com/2100-1025-1000154.html
Unfortunately, for us Electrical/Computer Engineers, there is no way around that. They simply won't hire you. Sucks, but that's how it works.
Not true. I managed to negotiate my current contract (as a Software Engineer doing Java work), to have a statement preserving my ownership of works done outside of work-hours and work-related-projects.
If you ask nicely, but firmly, your employee won't mind.
I would gladly fork out some money for a C++ Builder equivalent under Linux. I already own the Windows Version. C++ Builder is IMHO the ideal tool for developing GUI apps.
The formerly 'black/coloured' high-school in Kakamas has a fully equiped computer lab. And is by no means the exception. Upington, Keimoes... the list goes on. Rural government schools have to a large extent realized the importance of giving their students an edge in IT. Also, most rural areas have excellent rate-paying records. Keimoes won a National RDP award a few years back for being a town with %100 of rates being paid. This might not seem like a big deal, but it makes governing the town a lot easier when you have the support of all the people and all the peoples. I cannot speak for the rest of the provinces, but Northern Cape is by no means a backwater when it comes to IT. This might be explained by the fact that the average rural household probably has a lot more disposable income than the city-dwellers, who's cost of living is much higher (again, this holds true in the Northern Cape AFAIK)
Moreover, more and more big companies are throwing out old high-end 486s and low-end Pentiums. These make excellent Linux boxes. This opens up a means for even the most cash-strapped schools to get into the game.
So when can we start buying laptops without LCD panels? Anyone know how much of the actual laptop cost goes into the LCD, especially for the higher end TFT ones? I for one would be really interested in a laptop with a high-quality headset instead of the LCD panel... does ne1 at Toshiba read slashdot?

A bluetooth headset plus a bluetooth USB dongle for your PC achieves the same thing. I'm using this setup at the moment to use "Wireless Skype".

Something which would be a brilliant resource on Linux would be something like Petzold's excellent "Programming Windows" (Amazon Link).
I have not found a Linux equivalent text discussing KDE and GNOME programming at this level.
