When linux can give me installers for its software, ports of popular DAW's with VST support (I am a pro musician) and support for the latest gfx/games, I will happily remove windows from my HD and vow never to use a microsoft product again. Until then linux is really only viable for people who don't need specialist software or games...Its got all the software these people need pre installed. Thats fine, but you can't ask everyone just yet to ditch windows...
What linux really needs is a big budget thrown at it...put it through a real product development cycle. Big companies have to get behind it and it must be sold...it can never compete with MS's money if it never makes any money of its own, sad but true.
USB2 sucks once youve been using firewire...
External HD's are a nightmare under USB2.
try telling it to transfer 50GB of data...it will shit itself....
there are technical reasons for this of course, firewire is superior, but USB is cheaper to manufacture...
type firewire vs USB into google and youll get the technical reasons...
I cant believe it will take till USB3 to beat firewire1.
the industry picked the wrong standard the cheapo bastards...
what are they gonna do if you just proxy jump their stupid filter/proxy?
The computer world is full of smart people and we will beat any bullshit wall you put in our way. We are smarter than you are Mr Rudd.
you will never censor us and you will never beat piracy.
UK gov is launching a program to spy on the entire populations email and phone calls.
Its already received 1 billion pounds in funding.
Once its in operation, I can't see it not being the envy of all western governments and they will scramble to build their own database's...
the 2 political parties both work for them same people the extremely wealthy, the are several billionaires behind obama's rise to the top, not that I hold it against him, because he has to play a game by some rules...politicians, they usually just have the same crap different smell to sell...all part of making you think your free. Maybe Obama can stir some change, but he'll never get everything he wants...No 1 man will.
installing software is easy under windows, even for idiots...i dont think thats the main problem. its the fact there is little knowledge of gfx cards and controllers on PC amongst the masses. If the PC came standard with a gfx card that had minimum capabilities the software industry agreed on, fairly comparable to the current gen consoles and the PC came with a control pad I believe that would have a significant positive impact on the computer gaming platform. also, things like spore DRM only make people angry. Completely negative to the industry. I will never pay for an EA game EVER again until they change their DRM policy. Most of their games suck anyway. You wonder where all the money went when you play one of their games...
sorry, but a 3 dvd set isnt making top gear available to the crazy demand...3 dvd's of a few shows isnt making the entire series available to people. this is my point, there is the demand, but no supply because the cretins in charge of content are too slow to move, so slow that people just dont care that they are pirating anymore because either they are left with no choice in a lot of cases...
you have a point, but reagan made everyone believe reaganomics is the best way to run a country, which is why I single him out the most...its a completely flawed ideology. Making the extremely wealthy even more wealthy, paid for by neglecting the country's citizens doesn't make the masses any better off. It just causes immense social problems.
one day, its inevitable that apple will stop manufacturing computers...I hope they are extremely successful outside the computer biz, so much so that it is no longer makes financial sense for them to develop computers/OS's.
It will be a great day for the computer biz...
I would love to see some real competition in the computer market again, Apple dont like to compete hard in computer biz...those of us too young to remember the computer wars of the 80's will never understand how much innovation was happening and how cool it was to get your next machine...it was always a mind blower. Especially if you bought an amiga in 1985. Full preemptive multitasking OS and custom built graphics chips vastly superior to anything on the market. Many features that other home computers would not have until a decade later. Those working at Apple at the time thought they were going to be slaughtered by the Amiga, but they didnt know that Commodore seriously had no idea how to sell computers and in 1994 they went bust after giving a big technological lead away. Apples and PC's looked like typewriters in comparison when the amiga was launched... these days i know my next pc will number crunch more, but its so boring and predictable. fantastic new features seem to take a lot longer to happen, cpu just gets faster....my supposedly super fast dual core doesnt do anything much apart from number crunching and gfx that my 1998 P2 couldnt do pretty much the exact same way. The quest for complete compatibility and mega high profits is holding back computers. My god, if a new architecture/OS was developed with what we know now...damn that would be one crazy computer...I want to be blown away like I was when I bought my amiga in 1985. MS and apple have never ever done that. So let apple get out of the biz with these i-everything products and let someone who actually wants to compete in. No one is invincible. That means you MS/Apple
demanding a take down notice for a video like this is futile and silly. Demanding take down notices for you tube in general is futile. Not that this is new news, but the industry has not kept up with technology and the backwards train of thought that may have been ok in 1982 does not apply now. I read that top gear is the worlds most pirated TV show, yet you cant even buy boxed sets of the show. On top of that one, the TV networks don't make it easy to watch your favorite shows...they chop and change the times, chop and change the order and cancel your show whenever they feel like it. In terms of music (I am a professional musician) CD sales are down not just on the back of piracy, but also quality. There have been many studies with supporting data that show this. If an artist is especially popular, their CD sales should suffer when their music is heavily pirated, but this is not always the case. Its a complex problem, with other factors, but you can safely say its not just piracy causing poor CD sales. Many people are just getting sick of the same bling bling sex sex tripe that is the majority of commercial music now and are buying less CD's because so. In the older days, the big labels would spend time investing in and developing quality artists. Often a bands/groups 1st album was not so good and they would progressively get better each album. If your 1st album doesn't move large numbers in todays climate - bye bye, you wont be making another one. Record executives have been heard saying that james brown, parliament and curtis mayfield would never have been signed today...thats really sad...These days you can get over $100 million dollars NOT to make another album (mariah carey) because your previous album didnt make as much money as the bean counters thought it would (even though there were several top ten hits). One lone plus out of this is artists are forced to generate a lot more of their income from live shows, which can only be good for you, the punter, as you get to see your fave artists way more often. if industry in general wants to 'reduce' piracy, their business models have to completely change.
tonnes more material has to be way more accessible without being a rip off. DRM just makes everyone want to puke too.
you have a nice point, but at the same time windows is the OS for everyone, I was there in 95, watching it take over the world & wishing Commodore-Amiga had better management and never went broke. After all, I had preemptive multitasking multi tasking in my OS for the entire previous DECADE.
if you 'only' designed windows for people with a clue, the OS would be 10,000x better, but it would flop harder than vista...
If the general pc using population was a little brighter, the UAC would be fine. but with about 98% of all computers on the planet, there are going to be computer dumb dumbs galore who find the UAC extremely confusing.
the same people that call tech support and dont know where the space bar is or how to spell COMMAND (is that one M or 2 M's?). ill say this last bit again - there has to be a better way to accommodate these dumb dumbs. Or you could just kill all the old people and make sure everyone has a computer by the age of 4.
You have a brain. Unfortunately my experience in tech support a few years ago tells me theres a lot of computer users who have no brains at all and should just use a typewriter and mail their letters the old fashion way. They are the exact reason there are so so many virus's. I can understand these muppets getting frustrated by it. but, you have to admit - there has to be a better way!
i didnt intend it to be flamebait, your obviously pushing an extreme right wing agenda if you cant accept that lawyers can at least cause about as much harm as they do good (some of my friends are lawyers) which is the point relevant your comment. I never said they were all bad but Its almost like you think they are all the worlds unsung hero's....I only like to have reasonable discussions. for starters, you are assuming that what I know is based purely on watching the nightly news, which could only be furthest from the truth. Assuming that was a mistake, like your current president and your moderation rights. Secondly, from an Australians point of view, I feel like even though Australia is 100% a capitalist country, Americans would consider a lot of our policies socialist or communist. like our health care and education systems. I find that ridiculous. It backs my point that your society is unbalanced, where free market is the religion and where lawyers have caused much harm as well as good. your extreme right wing agenda is over this election "my friends". Moderate all you want, I have a life and I don't care about slashdot karma...I care about real karma. When someone gets turned away from a doctor because of your vote of evil greed, you are notching up real life negative karma points.
often people want to "zone out" when they play games...not "zone in". That is my fundamental problem with VW's. Im an old skool gamer. My god I still remember waiting ages for cassette tapes to load on my c64. Virtual worlds are definitely not for everyone. You have to put a lot in to get anything out of it really apart from chatting to some new people.
you will never get rid of trolls 100%, like a war on terror you technically cant win...The system here works great. Making people pay to post comments will only drive them to another site. Many people throw the word troll around when they find someone who disagree's with them. That is just as annoying as a real troll. Discussions are also meant to include negatives, like it or not. You mite find a flaw in your brilliant plan that you hadn't thought of. If a bunch of people sit around completely agreeing with each other, is it even a discussion?
The best thing the computer gaming industry can do is not actually "give" people a reason to buy a console...they've already got their computer. Theres no doubt there are problems in the computer gaming world, but this move can only be a good thing for computer gamers. If PC's, laptop or desktop (and I mean "personal computers" in general) come standard with decent graphics solutions it will only increase the platforms attractiveness to average joe who cant install a graphics card himself or does not know they even exist. Many people I know were not even aware you can get control pads for computers.
They like they fact that with a console you plug it in, turn it on and play. They know they will never be able to tinker around with the inside of a computer. And when I tell them about things like Spore DRM, they know they dont want to "rent" a game. IMHO, The big PC builders, Dell, HP etc..should give away a control pad with the purchase of a new PC and perhaps companies like EA could also give away some controllers with games that really need it. It doesn't have to be a fancy wifi one...just a cheap usb PS2 clone controller...if average joe knows the controllers exists, he knows he can upgrade...
hahahaha

I'm sure the wright brothers were telling people they were going to fly, before they ever flew.

or the industry could just agree on shit which is more likely than apple doing anything cool with computers.
woops - i meant installing software under windows/mac, see 1st sentence.
