    Yeah, like no movie ever got shot in some public places with humans, streets, cars, buildings etc. all being visible in that scene although none of it was created by the film crew and therefore shouldn't have been used!

    It's just that western religions tend to be.

    Western religions? Please name one that still plays a role these days. If you're referring to Islam, Christianity, Judaism, all three stem from the the Middle East. Look at the Middle East even today and you know what to expect what to come from there, in terms of "liberty & peace".

    The problem isn't IE6. The problem is that MS in all its wisdom decided that IE7 is for XP and better only. If you are/were still using W2K at the time, no matter how much you would have liked to get rid off IE6, you were forced to use it until you upgrade your OS. Stupid decision by MS.

    There has always been an about:config switch to turn this behavior off: noscript.firstRunRedirection false. In the current version, there's even an option in the 'Options' dialogue.

    And this is a major difference. The SF Encyclopedia sucks in many, many ways but at least if you look up (say) an author you get a mainstream overview of his writing (I suppose "critical commentary" is the right term). With the WP you get hard facts but still can't tell if this might be an author worth reading.

    Hmm, when comparing David Weber's WP entry with the SF enc. entry, I can't share your point of view.

    European-style washers and dryers have not made huge advances in energy efficiency in the last decade. Heck, dryers probably didn't for at least two decades.

    I think you are mistaken.Practically every new machine those days rates at least B (for dryers)

    I agree. I read somewhere that it is actually better to use cheap bulbs that burn out quicker, than long lasting bulbs. It's because the manufacturing costs and the manufacturing energy consumption are both lower than the requirements to power that long lasting bulb.

    I think this is part of the problem today. Anything produced is only looked up/calculated from the manufactoring side of things. I think things would look different if you take the costs of disposal, recycling, (hazzardous) waste management and loss of resources (i.e. rare earth) into account. I'm not sure it's still better using those cheap and crap bulbs taking the above into account.

    I vastly prefer a corporate system over a government system.

    Ironically, a good corporate system needs a well-functioning government system in order to work. Clear rules & regulations for you and your competitors, good infrastructure etc. Look at Somalia or Afghanistan or Iraq for how well corporations do there without a functioning government.

    That's perhaps because Americans are (in)famous for there use of ketchup.

    Hell, I've witnessed plenty of GIs (might not represent the typical American) putting ketchup on our Spießbraten - a crime for which one deserves insta-death.

    Hint: good meat tastes best without any sauce.

    Don't forget to deduce all the tax cuts and helps wind power gets to see how cheap it really is.

    That (=deduce all tax money that gets spent for a certain energy tpye) has been done in the past ... for the "oh so cheap" nuclear power the outcome was that nuclear power is by far the most expensive power (1 kW/h > 1 EUR). Just one example where costs are waived to the public: insurance. Nuclear plants don't require an insurance. If a disaster happens, the tax payer pays for the mess.

    And my point was that although it my be "dramatically lower", the Swiss lifestyle (or any first-world lifestyle for that matter) still consumes more than the one world we have, if projected to earth's whole population.

    Granted - you and I also no ways around that. But Mom & Pop don't ... and that's the point. They don't know that FB tracks them and even if they would, most of them have no idea how to avoid being tracked.

    So, you're saying that Mercedes, BMW etc. don't need to built cars that comply with U.S. regulations in order to sell them in the U.S.A.? I very much doubt that.

    You do business somewhere - you adhere to the regulations there.

    In Germany those lobbyists and politicians that don't understand/like the internet, always argue (and that has become a ridiculed meme amongst nerds meanwhile) "Das Internet darf kein rechtsfreier Raum sein" ("The internet shouldn't allowed to be a lawless space"). To which those in the known can only shake their heads in disbelief and answer "We're not aware of any law where the internet is exempt from ....".

    Funnily enough, China's actually doing a heap more stuff on reducing emissions than most countries, including starting trial emissions trading schemes next year. And their investment in renewable energies is extraordinary.

    And if this weren't ironical enough, they can do so because they're not a democratic system, but a totalitarian one where the leaders simply need to state "Make it so!"

    The resource usage of, say, the average Swiss or Dutch citizen is substantially lower, yet the living standard is not meaningfully worse (better by many measures).

    It is below U.S. American consumption rate, but any "western" society's consumption rate would already need > 1 Earth (currently 1.3 Earth, IIRC) if projected to the whole earth population.

    The sad part isn't even that we consume that much, but that we waste that much. In western countries we waste by producing and consuming way too many throw-away products. In developing countries the waste is mostly caused by terrible/bad infrastructure, i.e. currently 50% of Sao Paulo's water consumption is caused by leaks.

    Seriously, Hitler was pushing for more arian babies to be born, not less. If you want to spin it that way, that's also some sort of "control". But cleraly not in the sense of "lesser people born than people died".

    Yes ... and it is full of errors, as better measurement methods have shown over the past decades. ("Errors" as in "actual measurement doesn't match expected result from formula"). So, what's your point?

    But of course, just like Newtonian physics, the calculated results are so good that they can be used "IRL" safely.

    Adjusting theories when better methods allow to do so - isn't that the whole point of science? And the amount of time it needs for adjustment doesn't tell anything about the quality of a "scientific" theory ... otherwise the Flat Earth as promoted for a long time should be regarded as a very respectable scientific theory, because it lasted undisputed for centuries.

    China surpassed US both in absolute amount and in relative amount, by the way. US and the rest of the world has expanded their use proportionately.

    And now put those numbers into perspective and look at the per capita numbers. Looking that way, we (=the western world) are still the worst polluters - by a large margin. And we've been so for a long time. Now even with our very tiny decreases in emissions pointing fingers to other countries and demanding them to stop their grows while we can't be bothered to use our advanced technology to get rid off our own mess before, is hypocritical.
