So is there a GOOD debian based KDE distro then? It seems that the linux world is slowly shifting towards a Gnome/Debian and KDE/RPM dynamic.

I use Kubuntu (poor masochist I am) and I like KDE as a baseline but usually add in a lot of the big Gnome projects (Pidgin, Thunderbird) from the repos along with K3B, Amarok & Dolphin. I am comfortable with the Debian command line tools as well, hence the reason I am looking for this odd beast.

What worries me is that from the sounds of it that there is so much wrong that they will miss their deadline of the october launch if they do it right and address the show stoppers before release (Ubuntu-itis perhaps?) If they make the deadline and it sucks it will fail. If they miss the deadline by a couple months or more, the hype will be gone and Diaspora will be tossed aside.

I honestly hope they succeed. I use facebook and I like it, however the endless amount of drivel I see (and have to ignore) plus all the security changes and stuff means the clock is ticking on the site before the mass exodus begins. I have high hopes for Diaspora because it's open source and not centralized, and I hope it hits before the next awesome social networking site pops up and takes the glory.

It is, but you have to understand King's Dark Tower series is his Magnum Opus, and half of his books are integrated into the Dark Tower mythos in some way. Buick Eight, Eye of the Dragon, The Stand, Hearts in Atlantis, Salem's Lot and a bunch more are intertwined. It's pretty incredible.

Like I said in a post further down, it's good until book six, then does a left turn at Albuquerque. Still good, and you'll want to finish it, but does not live up to the hype. I think King pushed making the key and it didn't come out right.

Stephen King has said Clint Eastwood's 'Man with No Name' was his model for Roland Deschain. Obviously unless they do some insane CGI that's not going to happen. My guess would be a little known actor would be the best pick for the role.

I myself have loved cooking for a long time and in the past few years (with owning a home which has a decent sized kitchen and enough spending money to buy some real tools) I have really upped the variety of recipies and the different techniques I use. I have really started to learn the concepts *BEHIND* the meals, instead of 'Add eggs to milk and flour' which is basically what a cookbook does. In fact, my plan this winter is to design and assemble a smoker due to my BBQ not having enough capacity when I have a gathering and need to cook both ribs/roasts/fish/etc and some quick burgers and hotdogs.

I like the concept of Clementine, however some of the stuff they've had to add to graft Amarok 1.4 onto QT4 really makes me scratch my head. As well, I found it didn't have enough stuff working to be useful for me.

That being said, Amarok 2.3.1 (I think - whichever is on Kubuntu 10.10) is an animal. It runs as fast as Pana did on Ubuntu minimal + LXDE, with the only system tweak being that I turned off Nepomuk (the desktop search).

I think this is a good thing for everyone. Hear me out, I'm not an idiot, or at least I'm trying not to be!

Solaris, unlike the other big two open source operating systems - Linux & BSD - has always had the problem of the double edged sword because it always had to serve Sun, which in turn supported it. Now with Oracle punting Solaris to the curb, the community can really see what it's made of. Whether Solaris is an also-ran or if the community can really go full tilt and go in directions that it couldn't because of it's omnipresent master is entirely up to the people who support it. The future is bright for smaller form factors, as well as servers (again) so now it's time to see if they are big time players or another name to the pile of failed OSes.

    I wish them well.
