I do not think it means what you think it means.
Seriously, GPS destroys local knowledge? REALLY? So what you're saying is that I won't know where my favorite bars and the local grocery is without a sat-nav? That I won't know the area within a 2 km diameter of my house like the back of my hand without it? To quote Denis Leary: www dot WHAT THE F*** dot com!
Sat-Nav is a tool. End of story. I use Google Maps to plot a trek to someplace unfamiliar, but that's about it. Frankly, if somebody trusts their GPS unconditionally they're an idiot.
When I put on my tinfoil hat and look at this, I have to applaud Google â" this has been planned for ages â" four years minimum. The long view that this would have required is masterful.
1) gOS - Started in the beginning of 2007, it is a Linux distro which uses Enlightenment as its window manager and a host of Google Apps right on the desktop. It currently sits #21 on Distrowatchâ(TM)s top 100. 2) Mozilla - Google is responsible for 90% of their funding. Firefox (and to a lesser extent) Thunderbird have been eating IE & Outlook's lunch for quite some now. 3) Chrome - Released about a year ago, has tweaked the performance non-stop, and has done a lot of minimalist approaches.
Personally, I think Chrome OS will be gOS 4. It will feature a heavily tweaked E20 (You read that right - I donâ(TM)t think Enlightenmentâ(TM)s sudden release schedule is a co-incidence) which will use the current chrome palette, tabs for desktops and google widgets. Firefox & Thunderbird will be HEAVILY integrated/rebranded with the google online apps and will sync all the time for your calender, news & mail. The Gooffice suite will probably utilize a minimal browser window with the apps on the hard drive but will feature the same sync features that the rest of the apps have.
Is it crazy? Yeah, no doubt about it, but if this was really planned that way, I think Microsoft is in trouble.
Obviously I have way too much music or not enough free time - I didn't know last.fm had become non-free. This is what I get for still using Amarok 1.4 I suppose.
Personally, I suscribe to a number of Podcasts, including a number of CBC (www.cbc.ca) ones as well as TVO's 'Search Engine' (www.tvo.org). As well, CBC has concerts on demand at http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/cod/
I also second using Archive.org as a resource, although I find their search engine for music lacking. I haven't used legaltorrents yet, but I soon will!
I see this happening in Iran and even though I think the human suffering during this build up to civil war (and I have no doubt civil war will erupt from this) is immense, I look at the middle east overall and I wonder if Iran having this happen to it wouldn't be the best thing for everyone. With Iran fighting within itself, it doesn't have the focus on Isreal, Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq which has large issues with iran-funded militant groups. The money dries up, leaving the groups to fend for themselves, which they would find extremely difficult.
I personally hope that at the end of this there is a more 'west friendly' regime. It seems from all accounts that most of Iran's youth are wholeheartedly embracing technology and being part of the world stage. The middle east needs an country with an people-elected islamic leader which is willing to embrace the future.
Detroit seems to be the wisest place to begin with. High crime, lost Stanley cup, agony of the car companies. Let Sillicon Valley become the new city for car makers. Li-Ion rules!
For a minute there I thought you said 'Lions Rule'. When the B.C. Lions can beat the Detroit Lions, something is wrong.
And for the record - Osgood is still Hall of Fame worthy.
I try to combine both functional and fun naming schemes. Ok, not super fun, but interesting. I try to name my computers after animals which (somewhat) connect in my mind to what they do.
Timberwolf - current desktop Coyote - old desktop Princess - wife's laptop Bison - server Sabretooth - Wii Raptor - loaner desktop
Timberwolf was made using from the drives of Coyote, so it was an upgrade Coyote to Wolf. Bison is big (hard drive wise) and so is the real life bison. Sabretooth because those things are f'ing cool (as is the Wii) and Raptor because I tend to clone that a lot. And Princess, well, it should be obvious.
Hate to tell you, but Mach 3 is at EOL. I couldn't find Mach 3 blades anymore and thinking 'well, why would they swap handle designs?', picked up a pack of fusion blades for my Mach 3 handle. Of course, they changed handle designs.
They want a piece of facebook's action. I just went through the reset up (yes, yes, I use Yahoo, shut up) and looking at the layout and how it's set up it's a yahoo version of facebook.
And to quote a movie: 'This is not a good sign. No, no, no, no, no.'
By the way, if anyone can tell me the name of that movie I've been looking for it for ages. It's a comedy involving rafting that is late 70s, early 80s.
USPTO: How long did it take you to develop this? Applicant: X years USPTO: Prove it. Applicant: *Produces documentation* USPTO: Then your patent is good for X years from date of approval.
Caveat: If X>10 years, Patent is only good for 10 years.
This post is unpatentable due to the use of math and logic.
I agree with you, to a point. Never throw away something that is reusable - Still running/servicable computers. radios, shelves, bikes, etc. I myself have something like six towers and five bikes which are either in service or able to put into service with very little work. If something it toally trashed or is not usable for it's intended purpose toss it.
My in-laws (and to a large extent my wife) are all packrats and proud of it. When I see their upstairs office crammed with books from 30 years ago that haven't moved since they put them there I want to go thru it myself and remove the clutter. I love them all to death but it's a pet peeve.
And I'm looking at you Yahoo. To ensure you have the latest and greatist piece of yahoo IM they disallow you to do any type of file/photo sharing and make web cam stuff a living hell unless you have the newest version. They were pulling this stunt back when i was using XP & Trillian. I have since moved up to Kubuntu & Kopete, but yahoo is still a POS in that respect.
Now, if Yahoo's native linux client wasn't stuck back in 1999 we might have a chance. Maybe with Google and Yahoo joining forces something will get done.
I said this before and I'm sure that I got modded an idiot or something, but...
I think Windows 7 is BSD based. Look, Vista crashed and burned with everything. It's buggy, has crap for drivers support and they've known this for ages, I mean, it was two or three years behind schedule? Meanwhile Apple built an excellent BSD-based OS and wins approval from everyone. Don't believe for a second that Microsoft hasn't been watching. I think they see where BSD is the strong backbone and that Apple basically poached a lot of the Gnome interface (rebuilt for ergonomics, etc). It would not surprise me at all that Windows 7 follows much the same pattern except that the GUI will follow Vista/KDE much more. And because Microsoft will not have to worry about the backend they can concentrate on the GUI and the drivers and be able to turn it around for early 2009.
That is my opinion. I would like to see differing opinions on this, actually.
From the article: "RedOffice shows a possible way OOo could develop in the future. However, the chinese writing is extremely compact and allows RedOffice's exceptional menu structure. It remains doubtfoul that the user interface could be translated in other languages without major changes in its layout."
First, I very much disliked MS Office 2007's UI layout (based on Beta 2) however if OO decided to make this an option (OO3 remix?) I would certainly be interested in trying it out. It may convert me. Second, maybe it was me but I DROOLED over the icons. They look so much cleaner then 2.4's icon set. I'm sorry, but they look like they were lifted from Office 97.
I agree. Last weekend I installed 2K on my home server when I couldn't get Linux to install.
I run an oddball server (IBM Netserver E60 with dual P3s) and no amount of installs could bring it back. Ubuntu (8.04, 4.10, server), Xubuntu, Fluxbuntu, Red Hat - Nada. Kernel panic. Dropped in 2K and she fired right up. Updates w/o WGA, and it just runs.
We would like to welcome our new search-engine overlords!
Seriously, Microsoft a few years ago was considering jumping ship to Vancouver, BC. We are working on a more open set of copyright laws (vs the draconian U.S.) and I'm sure there would be some HUGE tax incentives.
Granted the RIAA/MPAA's northern arms will want the same thing but I suspect it will be denied. Money trumps pretty much everything, and up here Google et all would have a lot more then the CRIA.
So this guy is basically complaining because his girlfriend (who has never, ever used Linux before) couldn't find application names like 'Torrent Client', it's Ubuntu's fault there are things called repositories, and that everything from Windows doesn't work on Linux.
Bravo.
I will give the guy some credit - the flash issue with youtube is a pain in the ass - but really, he's testing how someone who drives a Geo Metro can handle a Freightliner. Sure, they can roll the windows up and down, but double clutching? They're lost.
My money says this: Give her a week learning the system and I bet the experience is a hell of a lot better.

You sir, just obsoleted my 'disappearing pencil trick' comment. I salute you.
Actually, dealing with this stuff would make me want to do the pencil trick to myself...

The trick is that later will be twice the price.

Jack & I have something we agree on.
But I still think he's an idiot and would wreck the country if elected.
So then we make it simple:
USPTO: How long did it take you to develop this?
Applicant: X years
USPTO: Prove it.
Applicant: *Produces documentation*
USPTO: Then your patent is good for X years from date of approval.
Caveat:
