Agreed. Ubuntu is the most widely used linux distro on the planet and it seems like every second story on here about Linux involves Ubuntu. Show them a little love!

Ubuntu 8.04 Released
·
· Score: 3, Interesting
And ladies and gentlemen, that is why I won't be be 'apt-get dist-upgrade' until next week. I swear, Ubuntu get's the world's worst slashdotting twice a year. I could download the alternate, but meh, I'm not that concerned.
As a side rant, last week I installed the Kubuntu 8.04 Remix RC, and after two hours I retreated to 7.10. I have no doubt Ibex will be awesome, and I might even upgrade sooner to KDE4, but as of right now, it's not so good.
Is for Microsoft to use the BSD kernel for Windows 7.
They won't use Linux because it's GPLed, and I'm sure they took a look at Apple and went 'Damn, that makes sense'. Why do you think they said they could deliver Windows 7 in a year?
Not quite in this case. If you push with ten times the marketing and grab a huge lead, it's still linux. Thanks to the GPL it all has to be released. It's kind of like an elastic band. You can build a big lead (stretch the band), but the competitors will come up quick behind you because they have everything you do (snap back).
Of course, this does not account for microsoft linux not following the GPL, etc, but in theory that's how it will go.
Granted it's not in the official repos, but I had very good luck with http://www.debuntu.org/ and their.deb of Red Hat's LVM-system-config. It's in their repos and worked like a charm when I recently switched over my home server from XP to ubuntu.
Actually, I would like to think the money would go to the multitudes of indy artists up here, although I'm not against Corb Lund & The Tragically Hip (although they certainly don't need it!) getting some money as well.
I call it bullshit. First thing that popped into my mind after I RTFA was that 'Canada is considered a pirate (along with Russia and China) but Sweden (and the Pirate Bay) isn't? Did I miss the memo?'
Secondly, how did these guys come up with these numbers? $511 Million? Between China & Canada that's $3.4 billion dollars in piracy. In music and movies. Think about that. $3.4 billion at $20 per movie/CD (assuming that's the average) is 170 million movies and CDs not being sold this year. Do they even have the capacity to manufacture that much?
Whatever. I'll gladly pay caesar what he is owed and have my downloads.
Maybe I'm new here (and my number proves it) but Shrike? First, I had to metacrawler it (yeah, I know) and Shrike is the name for Red Hat 9. This was released in 2003! For the love of everything good and holy, he couldn't pick something in 2005 that was, ya know, current?!?
And as for the author's question "But to this day I've never heard an answer to one question: Since even Linux advocates admit that it's harder to use, what can you do with Linux that you can't do with Windows, to make it worth switching over to?" The answer: Keep money in my pocket (Don't have to pay for Windows) and get free updates forever.
Frankly, I think Kubuntu 7.10 is every bit as good as XP is right now. And with KDE 4 getting better everyday I expect the real Vista experience in the fall this year - Kubuntu 8.10
Maybe it's me, and I realize this is Slashdot, but what the hell is up with slogging on the BROWN Zune. Personally, I think it looks the best of the three choices, Actually, notwithstanding the inherent Microsoft stuff, I would rather buy a Brown Zune then any other Zune or iPod. White and Apple bores me.
Actually, while I'm on this rant, let me get this off my chest: I WANT Microsoft to be big and bad. I WANT Apple to be big and Bad. Why? Because Linux needs the opponent to get better. Do you think Linux would be where it is today without a worthy adversary? Not on your life. Linux vs Windows vs OSX. Each pushes the other beyond what has been done. And in the end, we (the consumers) win.
Note: I run Kubuntu 7.10 on an AMD Sempron (1.6 Ghz) and it owns my Windows box at work (3 Ghz P4).
Personally, beyond Heroes and NCIS, I don't think I watch any American episodic television. And the longer the strike continues, the more I see shows like JPod (http://www.cbc.ca/jpod/) getting on to American television. Canada, Australia, England and all produce very good TV and I think it will be embraced.
Of course, my (currently down) torrent server gets me what I want all the time? My actual TV is for gaming and movies.

KDE 4.0 Is Out
·
· Score: 1
I'm sticking to KDE 3.5.8. I'm surprised that they released it this early considering the reported huge amount of bugs. I mean, Canonical wouldn't release Kubuntu 8.04 as a long term release because they knew that KDE 4 wouldn't be ready for prime time and nobody will support it in 2011.
On the flip side, I'm glad (to quote Meatloaf) the Monster is loose. This means that KDE can go from (IMHO) XP look to something much closer to OSX. It also means that Amarok 2.0 is one step closer to reality for my Windows box at work. I look forward to Kubuntu 8.10 (or maybe earlier) with KDE 4.x in it. And let the visual sexiness begin.
Maybe my memory's a bit fuzzy since it's been a decade or better since I've looked at frictional losses on automobiles, but the frictional losses throughout the drivetrain equal somewhere around 80%. So divide his numbers by 5. For example:
Well, since 1 HP is the power to lift 33,000 lbs one foot in one minute, 30 hp should be able to lift 990,000 pounds one foot in one minute. Assuming that the car weighs in at roughly 2500 pounds, and four jumbo sized American occupants of 300 pounds each, we have a total weight of 3700 pounds, which a 30 HP engine should be able to raise 267 feet/minute, exclusive of frictional losses, especially air turbulence over relatively flat terrain.
Drop that 30 HP to 6 HP. 267 feet/minute drops to 53 feet/minute, or a mind blowing 1/2 mile per hour. Bravo.
Maybe it's me, but these numbers do not make any sense. Assuming for non-server machines (And I'm just pulling these numbers out of my ass, feel free to correct me):
39% Vista
7% Mac OSX
1% Linux - I use Kubuntu for the record.
This leaves ~53% for XP to be shipped. Maybe it's me, but this doesn't make ANY sense. If you were Microsoft wouldn't you talk to the top 5 shippers of your product (Dell et al) and make damn sure every machine they did ship had Vista on it, even to the point of paying them to install them? Your mission is to utterly dominate the market within the first year.
Let's face it: They're totally full of shit.
So beyond '5th Gear', 'Blackout', 'Cowboy Town', 'Carnival Ride', 'I'm Not Dead' and 'Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates' there is absolutely NOTHING on that list I'm even remotely interested in. In fact, I already downloaded Brad Paisley's, Britney's & Pink's Albums. (Hint: Blackout SUCKS, 5th Gear KICKS ASS, and I'm Not Dead is iffy). So why would I go buy it at a store? Truly deserving of the tag 'Nothing to see here. Please move along.'

I could understand it, except for one little issue: Their #1 competitor, ATi, has open-sourced their stuff. If they can do it, why can't nVidia.
Disclaimer: I use nVidia chipsets in my Kubuntu box. Works kick ass with Envy. Although ATi quite possibly will get my business next time I upgrade.
And he just was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame too. As a fellow canadian I salute him!

Bill Gates talking about a kinder capitalism is kinda like a leper giving a facial. It doesn't really work!

I think sacrificing your first born (or at the very least his college fund) will be more in line.
Thank you! Now I have to listen to Arizona Bay on my way home tonite. I thought I had kicked the Bill Hicks addiction.
Didn't Coast To Coast deal with this last night? They Did! http://www.coasttocoastam.com/shows/2008/01/05.html#recap
Ditto on Britney.
