The idea of Y-class brown dwarf stars are neat and all, but this whole 'stepping stone' idea is not really explained. Why would we use these as stepping stones? Is there an advantage to it? I don't understand why we would use them is all.
It's not bad - I tend to use two profiles (email, fb, flickr, etc) so I scored an invite on my non-public profile and tried it out. Honestly, the potential is there but it's still rough. I find the sparks thing doesn't work worth a damn and with only one friend (currently) it's kind of difficult to really play with the circles to sort it out. I think in a few months it will be worth it but right now stick with facebook.
My biggest thing is that this time around I expect to be fully searchable by everyone eventually (facebook horror stories have taught me well) so my plan is to highly restrict my cross section - few photos, nothing incriminating nor inciting for statuses, no personal information which would help authorities get me in the dead of night, etc. Yes, it's extreme but I believe it's a matter of time before it becomes SOP for employers to regularly check the web for their employees doings. And to say nothing regarding what HR will be hunting for when hiring. Why risk it? If and when I get to the point that Google+ has a critical mass of family & friends on it I will probably commit facebook suicide
Finally, I also want to start to cultivate face-to-face friendships again. Social networking has let me keep up with family and friends, but I'm at the point where I want to have friends over for coffee, go for drinks, and just not have wires between people I care about. It's a tool, but a tool that has grown far too unwieldy for me.
it is very rough around the edges. As well, I'm still working out the whole 'sparks' thing.
Really, until more of my friends are on it (I have exactly one) it's about as useful as Diaspora. And even then, maybe. My biggest thing is that any new social networking profile will be minimized from here on out. No wild party photos, no divisive status updates or posts. Even with Plus' security features, this is Google weren't talking about and the info will be seachable at some point. I don't need one crazy night to get me turned down for a job or have the cops knocking on my door. Sadly, with social networking even in your downtime you have to be professional.
Yes, they do (except for friend's profile pic on the chat list), however I was comparing Kopete to Pidgin out of the box. With the W2K artwork I was refering to the stock color on *buntu based systems and the really boxy windows. I normally like the basic look (I use Lubuntu currently - quick and very little fluff) but the downgrade at that time was harsh. Actually, I noticed that Pidgin is finally handling Yahoo file transfers again.
Windows 2K artwork (including grey on grey background), Times New Roman text, no profile pics, no messenger service icons. Going to that from Kopete which had theme integration, and all of the settings turned on by default is definitely a downgrade.
What really worries me is that a lot of the KDE people are putting resources into Telepathy and that Plasmoid thingy instead of working on Kopete. Kopete used to be light years ahead of everyone else, having webcam capability as well as a really attractive UI. I also adored the multiple profiles it supported. I first started pulling away when Pidgin gained facebook chat capability and Kopete took months to gain it. The last time I tried it on my LXDE laptop it wouldn't play nice with the message notifications. I could try it again but why? Pidgin is pretty close to having everything Kopete had and I have accepted the ugly ugly UI that Pidgin has. It's a pity though.
While I agree that we need protection from government intrusion, your example doesn't make sense. At most it partially explains motive while ignoring means and opportunity.
1) As the victim's neighbor you would have already been questioned by police if you saw anything, etc. and would already be on their 'people of interest' list if anything seemed weird or you didn't have an alibi.
2) The call to your mom states a widely-known fact along with a personal opinion of the neighbor. No real insider knowledge of the crime.
3) The other neighbors and the victim's family and friends would be questioned as well and if there were any issues between you and the victim they would most likely know.
Again, I agree with your statement, but the example doesn't work. Frankly if you're in court it's for far more than your phone call.
I'll get flamed for this but I love the web server that is built in. I use it instead of throwing stuff up to websites like senduit and the like. SO much easier and cleaner from my end. I haven't really worked on the photo sharing piece of unite yet however. That's something else too. Granted, their E-mail and torrent program is shite but their RSS feeder is the best I've used by miles and miles. Nobody has come close.

Me personally, I always update with 'sudo apt-get update' on the command line because I find it faster than Update Manager.
I do as well. I think Update manager is a poor program in general. For months it kept trying to install firefox when I had specifically uninstalled it. If it can be punted, fantastic.
I actually have both Synaptic and Software Centre on my computer and I think while it's not quite there, the S.C. is going to be a fantastic piece of kit. The program rankings I love and the ability to only show top level program without the multitude of libraries is worth it.
Totally agree. Facebook has gone from greatest thing ever to another tool in the kit. I use it to keep up with family & friends and keep track of events I might want to attend. No games, nothing too crazy.
Myself, it wasn't just about the privacy issues or employers crawling it or whatnot (although I am certainly aware of it more than in the past). It just got to the point where I organically whittled out the B.S. and kept what I liked. Frankly, I wonder what else I could need? I have MSN, Yahoo & Facebook, plus E-mail. I might need another chat protocol in the future, but that's about it.
Honestly, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the next big thing is a Facebook client for the desktop. Distributed chat, events, statuses and games

Point Taken. I will remember it next time. :P
Seriously, I just added you as a friend because of that joke.
Fuck man, do you want me to spit coffee all over my screen?
I read the headline and my thought was 'from the Lt. Barclay was here dept.'
Then read the summary and thought? Steve Austin? What the hell does Stone Cold have to do with this?
Are people really this dumb?
I assume that's rhetorical.

Fuck, now I'm going to jones all day for that 1973 Gremlin X I missed out on buying. FML.
Linux has had this option for ages. How often does Apple play catch up with the OSS community?

When one is smoking meat, opening the cover to check on the meat is the last thing you wish to do. This lets heat, smoke and moisture out.
Totally with you on the drinking though.
most interesting man in the world voice
I don't play video games often, but when I do, I prefer them not to be Capcom.

Then a web server built into the browser.

Can you give examples? I'm with the OP and don't see that many issues.
Simplify, simplify, simplify. Rinse. Repeat.

Isn't that Apple's golden rule? *ducks*
Just as a counter-point my wife's Windows 7 laptop keeps dropping the signal, and yet my Lubuntu laptop is a rock.

When will Opera & Pidgin have this?
100% Agree - screw the analysts (not literally). I'll take Opera's sane point releases anyday.
