I did some consulting for Visa for a week or so near Atlanta a few years back. 14 hours a day; not only was everything I did being watched by camera, but I had to do all my load testing, code review and reporting while standing with my laptop on top of a freaking wire spool because they wouldn't allow chairs in their data centers.
I own a small business that was looking to get some manufacturing work done. While the Chinese were dirt cheap, in the end their version of what is ethical business practice and what are's was turned out to be vastly different.
You also get what you pay for. Look to a company in the US first for starting out. Once you have a proven design and concept, then consider moving elsewhere to build what you have. The extra money up front will give you a better product!
It was disgusting to me to witness this. BTW, they push the warranties so much because of the free trips and stuff that the GMs and Sales Managers get. This results in more money to those directly in charge; store profit is not exactly always the motivator.
In CompUSA's case, no stock was kept on the floor and in my experience no one ever asks if something was in stock first. They just always assume.
I was a commission salesmen for CompUSA for a short stint for some extra cash between jobs. I was amazed when I found out that the same things were going on there, only it was being forced on the salesmen by the General Manager and Sales Manager.
If I couldn't sell a laptop that was on sale without TAP (their protection warranty) we were told to tell the customer that unfortunately the last one just went out. They would change the stock counts so they had full control. Printers, PDAs and cameras were as bad as Laptops; the world stopped and you got a major bitch session if you sold one without TAP.
They even went as far as to reprint their own prices, raising the price of every laptop and some computers and items by at least $100 in the store. If a salesmen was unable to sell TAP then with permission of the sales manager they could "save" the customer $100 of the price of the laptop if they bought TAP... Fictitiously bringing the price down $100-$200.
Quick, ban this guy for posting something that might be construed as anti-apple... We all know they can't do wrong. Someone change Apple -> Microsoft and all will be well...
Am I right in thinking that no one would care about an iPhone JVM port (including Sun) if Apple wasn't being an overprotective nazi mom in reguards to what kind of application can be installed on the phone that I bought? I have "unlimited" data access as long as it's the right kind of data... Fantastic!!! I for one have not been drinkning the Apple Coolaid...
When will companies learn to provide us [Consumers | Developer] tools to use that do not have purposeful limitations that are simply the concoction of someone who wants to confine what I can do with their product.
"Apple will not allow any application to be installed on the machine other than through the iTunes store"
So how can you be targeting businesses with this product then? What if I want to develop a special in house only product for my sales people to use that I don't want the competition to get ahold of? Why can't the iPhone work like every other piece of hardware I own and run any kind of program/hardware I can stuff in there? I'm on the fence of getting fed-up with Apple...
It's hard to give tons of feedback without knowing more about what your currently using (low use tech / vs god hates your HR staff) but if your going to consider making a tech jump, I would highly recomend making a major version jump (assuming your writing that kind of application).
Depending on the age of the current app(s) and skill of your past developers, sometimes a total rewrite is cost saving in the long run by aiding in faster turn-around and all around easy of adding on to the app at a later period...
I bet this would be an amazing tool for Police, Swat and the likes. I bet our boys over seas could find some uses for it as well to sneak into places undetected.
Too bad it's probably really loud on hard surfaces and requires a massive cable bundle...
So let me get this straight... "The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is the trade group that represents the U.S. recording industry" and is suing countless numbers of fairly young American students who can't even afford the school they are going to, on behalf of the Artists so they can get their fair share.
The law suit amounts ($$$) are based off of compensation for these Artists and writers who have been 'taken advantage of' by these 'nasty little teens'. Yet in the end those artists aren't getting a dime. I want to start seeing Metallica sue the RIAA instead of crying like babies about the internet...
As someone who sells things on ebay those bad feed back markings are helpful. I don't want to waste my time selling something I'm making a tiny profit on bickering with a crappy customer who is just looking for something for free...
I'm more concerned about protecting the buyers more. My company bought a generator last year for a decent chunk of change and literly did not get any in turn for my money. Neither E-Bay or PayPal cared. 4 months later and 3 canceled ebay accounts later [mine] they finaly banned the company from selling and we got out money back...
I tend to lean twords the "whatcouldpossiblygowrong" since a lot of these scientists are focused more on the accomplishment and end game versus thinking about the negative side effects that could occure.
Being a software engineer and not a scientist I am completly amazed at accomplishments like this (makes my stuff look stupid) but I can't help but wonder: "So who is going to come and ruin the party for everyone else". Someone is bound to to do something someday screwing with base evolution and create the ultimate "Woops"!!!
I live in an area where Time Warner is extremely dominant. They spend a lot of money at the local level to make sure that companies like Verizon can't bring in competing products... They also drop their prices in areas where competing products are available and raise them in places where they are not....
Has the cold war restarted yet? It seems like both parties are still pretending it hasn't. Russia has not been cooporative in any means on any subject for years now...
Why does it seem like Apple is becoming increasingly more anti-developer / 3rd party developer? I wanted an iPhone, but when after discovering the lack of existing and inability to develop applications on my own for the platform I backed away.
It seems like a company like Apple should be going the exact opposite what their currently trending...
The CIA Destroyed tapes that had nothing to do with an investigation but instead to keep some Clinton leftover hack who cares more about who is in power than how it could be used as propaganda by our enemies.
BTW: Tea and Cookies don't yield very good intel from Terrorists willing to blow up little children!
What level of stupid do you have be at to be an employee of and to approved stuff for the patent office?
I'm tired of seeing pathetic patents for generic terms, technology and thought.

What are they going to do? Not bury you AND fine your family? Way to go France; you sure this isn't just another way to collect more taxes.
Do most people who die really expect to die at the moment they do? Absurdity at work!
Who would need car bombs when you could just ship one to underneith someone's house or building...
