Office for Linux would indeed be "A Bad Thing." The more bloated and unstable apps _associated_ with Linux, the less credible it will appear as an OS. I know, the idea sounds silly, but if a mag like zd puts up a side-by-side comparison of Office for NT and Office for Linux and it shows that the Linux version is slower (even if intentionally made slower by MS) it will make it look like it's Linux's fault.
"Customers are asking us about Linux, but we can't make money on it today," says Howard Diamond, chief executive officer of Corporate Software & Technology..."
This is exactly why the whole commercial software industry will eventually fail. Customers want something that the industry is unwilling to provide. All they want to do is stuff their own wallets.
Not true. Crappy apps can kill the credibility of an OS in the eyes of the pointy-haired bosses out there.
Imagine MS releasing Office for Linux, and it runs 3x slower than Office for Windows. Then their spin doctors go to work, and all of a sudden, magazines warn everyone how Linux is much slower than Windows.
I agree, but just the browser and OS should be tacked onto each person's post. The ip serves no purpose but to show hackers who to smurf when they disagree with you.
>Basically, if any two-bit interface artist can rip off software that costs millions to develop, who is going to spend millions?
I think the fact that digital information of _any kind_ can be duplicated exactly and distributed at zero cost, serves to demonstrate how much that information is _actually_ worth.
Companies artificially give their information worth by patenting it, not by first spending to research it. All the money spent on research in the world does not make information worth money.
Only when companies realize how inherently worthless their information is will we begin to see some change in the way things work in this country, and throughout the world.
People will then write software whose primary purpose is to be used, not software whose primary purpose is to be sold.
Just look at the way the media has hyped Y2K. They will have you convinced that the world is going to end on Jan. 1. You know why? Ratings! They are raking in the dough everytime they mention it!
I predict a lot of people are going to waste a lot of money preparing for Y2K. Anyone want to start a business? I'm sure a lot of people will capitalize on the frenzy that the news media has been creating.
>I am happy however, that Matrox has released their full G200 specs. (yes, including 3D). This means that Linux has a chance of getting an OpenGL ICD (ok, just checked, a non-beta ICD;) for the G200 before Windows has one;)
Yes, it is most fsck'd up. One-way cable, one way phone line, and it disconnects me every few minutes lately.. definitely not worth what its costing me
One thing I am starting to hate about the binary distributions that are available for GTK programs: Every one I download seems to require a different version of GTK. Prog 1 requires gtk-1.1.11, Prog 2 requires gtk-1.1.13, Prog 3 requires gtk 1.1.14, so in order to get them all to work you need multiple versions of gtk installed. It's better to just go and re-compile the source.
People, if binary distros and rpm's are ever going to catch on, you have to release programs that are forward- and backward- compatible with different versions of commonly used libs. And I consider gtk and glib commonly used at this point, even if they are development (1.1.x) versions. It's probably a PITA to do this, cause development libs change alot, but sheesh, anyone who has ever tried to install GNOME and any other GTK app in existance from rpm's knows what I mean.
Until these problems are solved, "use the source, luke" will be the only truly failsafe way to install.
Multiple licenses mean splits, fights, and worse

I don't usually respond to such obvious trolls, but I think this is why they are allowing multiple licences. If you want to use the GPL version use the GPL version. If you want to use any other version, go ahead. Multiple licenses actually means there will be more people getting along!
This is debatable. More software for Linux is great, provided that it is free (free speech, not free beer). More and more closed and proprietary software will only "Windows-ize" it.
RealNetworks can take their closed-source garbageware somewhere else as far as I'm concerned.
The developer does lose, because any improvements to the software after being taken "under the covers" do not make their way back to the original codebase.
I'm not really up to speed about what why everyone here is so against RMS, ESR, and all the Free Software guys... I mean I thought as a group many of us are all for their ideals!
This isnt meant to start a flame, I'd just like the current reason for all the hostility. I think im out of the loop.
5-10%? That's nonesense. I don't know where you get your numbers, but an FP-intensive app that was optimized for KNI will get TONS more of a performance boost.
Current apps however will only have a marginal improvement, because they were not written specifically for KNI.
Then there's the car its in, Rob do a car poll, I'd bet that most slashdotters dont drive the latest BMW or Porsche model.
:)
At least the ones that aren't communists

Microsoft is mentioned a million times.. Do you have a problem with this too? Linux is mentioned alot too.. hmm, what's wrong with that?

Think it can't happen? Look at OS/2.

What's the big facination with Mars? Why would anyone ever want to live there?

Had microsoft won the domain, we would have seen no end to the FUD.

Where/when was this??? URL?

Actually I have cable modem access, but I can't keep it connected for more than a few minutes at a time!
I get it thru Mediaone. Just stay away from them if you are thinking about cable.. THEY SUCK!
Who in the world puts >5mb mp3 files on a server that does not support resumes?? How RETARTED. Anyone have a mirror of the two files?
id has released the source to every major game they did. No reason to assume they wont keep doing it.

"Good enough" is the Windoze way.
