For the record, I am at 3 months, and still waiting for the email that will have a link that will let me finish the account removal page of Linked In. (you will be getting an email in the next 24 hours......) Nobody cares there.. I mark every single one of their emails as spam, just to make me feel better...
How fast did SL 5.6 come out? Oh, wait.. it hasn't.. So if you have stuff running on SL 5.5, that you don't want/can't move to 6 yet your sitting and waiting...
4.9, 5.6, and 6.0 were all released in a very short time.. CentOS decided to do the ones that were currently being used first. SL decided to go with the new shiny one (which is nice about being small, and not having many people using your software on externally facing things)
Because some people think NAT=Firewall. They don't seem to realize, even with IPv4, you can put internet routable IP's behind a firewall, and block access to them. They seem to think NAT is some sort of magical seperation between the networks, when it is not.
I am no CentOS apologist, but.. Security updates have been coming out for a few weeks now since 5.6 was released, and today, QA is about 2 weeks away from releasing 6.
No its not.. Not at all. Most of my Unix boxes have uptime measured in years! YEARS.. One I worked on today was 980 days. And not just sitting idle, but running at a minimum system load of about 4 almost 24x7 this whole time, running Databases. Go ahead, update the network card driver on your windows hyper-v server without a reboot... I'll Wait. All my servers have two different models, its just a "modrpobe -r drivername; modprobe drivername".. About a 5 second hiccup that isn't noticed because the nic's were bonded.
Yes, windows has gotten better, no, its not anywhere near linux, at least an enterprise grade linux. I had to build a windows 2008 server and had to reboot something like 6 times last week to finish installing updates.. I would install something, then after a reboot, it would show that it had a hotfix, or service pack, or whatever.. What the heck is that about?
Why not? Why is an amazon EC2 instance, with encrypted data and IPTables only allowing port 22 and 80 any less secure than having the same thing, sitting in the server room. I have never understood the security fears of "the cloud" except from people that think security is putting a firewall at the network edge, and trusting anything that is behind it. If you deal with defense layers, and you monitor your systems, the location really doesn't matter as much.. (except for physical security, of course)
$CompanyOtherThanGoogle has announced they will not release their source, based heavily on GPL code, until they, and only they decide its "ready".
Replace the Google with Redhat, and Android with "Enterprise Linux 6.1" and see how many people start getting upset, threaten to boycott, etc.. why is it okay when Google does it?
At least facebook likes open protocols.. Their chat is just jabber, and I can connect with Pidgin.. I like that, and would love to see them either open up the protocol to something new, or perhaps move it to libjingle or something.
You should show your disgust for these tactics by switching to sprint, or another, smaller provider in your area that doesn't cap bandwith. Some also have "soft" caps that slow you down after 5GB, but don't cut you off or charge you more...
I don't understand why they don't let me correct it myself.. Not only would I be helping them with their algorithm, but then I would have a known good transcript to save in my voicemail for later searching.. (Searching is pretty bad if your looking for a word or phrase that is often mis-interpreted).
How many real players buy Dell or HP? Seriously? Facebook, Google, Rackspace? they all have custom OEM ones, (and I think Amazon does as well). So those shipments don't count in the numbers your quoting.. Seriously, with VM's, windows is going out quickly.. When you can turn up a new server in 5 minutes, you can seriously start isolating services. ie, separate print server, file server, calendar server, etc. Except with Windows, your paying out the nose in licensing and CAL's.. (why do people always forget the CAL's?)
I had a buddy (not in IT) sacked from a local hosital, because he was trying to understand the program he was supposed to use for his job better, and was kind of playing with it, to understand it. he got sacked for looking at other patients records.. Apparently, they have a sanitized training datbase in their training area... Do not mess with HIPAA, because the hospital admins are scrared to death of it..
Prineville, OR is high altitude desert.. So even when it gets warm in the summer, the nights are usually cool. there is a very short timespan that it is hot both night and day in that part of the state.
meaning that you either have to remain in your job however crappy it becomes or you're unemployable in any industry using your skill set, at least for 'x' months, and you end up flipping burgers.
cmon now, thats what they are trying to do by having your employer offer insurance. It makes it much harder to take off for a while if your paying that much a month for insurance without them..
Are we also going to force all COMpanies out of.org and.net? Really, the only "protected" domain that does what it was intended is.EDU, and there have been some that have been allowed that should really be.COM.
I'm totally fine with this kind of caps, the soft ones.. If someone is hitting their cap, slow them down to a reasonable speed, where they can still use their connection, but its noticeably slower.
its expensive, but there will be no fuel costs.. A natural gas plant might cost "only" $400 million, but you have to pay for 30 years or more of gas... This they just gotta have some maintenance here and there.
Actually, in my area, there are more poor people with a $100 cell phone and a very cheap data plan than there are with a $600 laptop and $50/month internet connection. I think I prefer they spend their money on that. Good luck finding a decent job if you don't have internet..
I've often wondered how the registry can still be used in its current state? I mean I can query a multi-GB database on a server in a second. It can take minutes to search through the 20MB registry... And why not have a transaction log or rollback functionality? (something like Juniper's "commit/confirm" would be fantastic too..
Your communicating with clients via DropBox? Why not use a "real" solution like http://www.accellion.com/ that supports things like actual user authentication, SSL transfers (that will work through any firewall) and can notify you when its updated? not to mention much, much bigger file sizes?

SMTP, but not in the first few releases of Exchange :)
Your putting up a set of servers that will be used past 2017? Wow!
Thats how far 5.6 will continue to get security patches.. 2014 for regular errata updates...

CentOS 6 is looking to be another week or two.
In all seriousness, there is this thing called Multicast.. that works for both IPv4 and IPv6...

Another is processing of any confidential data.

Not all browsers have a search bar. Ever used chrome?

I'm sure it will be just as horrible as the Arpa-net was.. Oh, wait..
