I agree, its kinda like how in my old house, I pay a few dollars a month for 60 amp service to my house, but the majority of the bill is my actual usage. If 60A isn't enough, I can get a bigger "pipe" but it gets much pricier.. Just become I have 60 Amps available to me, doesn't mean I should be using 60 amps 24/7. In fact, if I were to use 60A all the time, and a few neighbours did the same, it would cause brownouts.
I have no problem with usage based pricing for bandwidth, as long as its treated like a utility... Don't block crap or tell me what to use it for, make the basic connection fee dirt cheap, and reasonable bandwidth rates. Oh, and most importantly, allow me to see, instantaneously, what my consumptions is for the billing cycle.. (just like I can look at my power meter)
Imagine how much money libraries of the future could save, by sending you your book electronically. They would save a fortune in shipping books around between libraries, storing them, etc. I know, they would always have books for historical reasons, but if I could log onto my libraries web site, and request a book, and then instantly get it online, that would make me use it much more. (my current library does the first 2, and emails me when my book is in, but I still have to drive 7 miles down to the library, during their business hours, which are getting scarcer and scarcer..
No, the complete death of a multi-billion dollar industry, and the "jet set" mindset of an entire country. Bomb a checkpoint or two, and see how many people want to travel on business trips anymore...
Just ask yourself one question, if you don't trust your internet provider enough to do DNS correctly, should you trust them at all?
I trust my ISP very much. However, I don't trust all the local Coffee shops, small businesses, hotels, airpots, etc to be secure, and not route me through proxies and man in the middle attacks.
Cause an E-Reader uses E-Ink, which only uses electricity when the text changes. It doesn't take any power to show static text, just change it. (unless, of course, you use the low power backlight)
Nobody wants to charge their textbook a couple of times a day.
How can they do "anything"? the phones have to follow standard protocols to talk to the towers. Without the towers, the cell phone is worthless..
Kinda like you have to follow TCP/IP to use the internet. You might do different things with it, but to communicate with others, you have to follow the spec. All the phone companies have to do is publish the specs and protocols and standards that they will enforce.
I would say ATI AMD are about to become the leader. Intel is making it more difficult to ship mobile systems without the craptastic intel graphics cards. Larrabee was supposed to be a decent performance GPU, that would almost be like a co-processor.
AMD has slightly slower CPU's, but their intgerated graphics blow the snot out of the Intel ones, and are getting even better.. What good is a super fast CPU, if you can't play any games, or even do basic stuff without using the power hungry CPU?
No, tazers were originally billed as an alternative to shooting, IE, the cop would only Taze someone in a situation where they would otherwise use deadly force. It was ONLY going to be used for such purposes, and since it has been approved by every police agency in the country, suddenly, its being billed as a great way to Subdue suspects, get them to comply with orders, etc.
Yes, its going to be one of the 37 editions of windows 8.. I'm just making sure I get "Windows 8 - Solitare edition" to make sure that the one I get doesn't have my favorite time killer removed!
I have been looking at LED's to replace my other lights, for 2 reasons, CFL's, like any flourescent, don't like turning off and on often, it wears them down faster, and my house has lots and lots of dimmer switches. the "Dimmable" CFL's seem to go from 85% bright to 100% bright, and I can't stand them!
If he got paid for being "on call" as a independent contractor then we'd all have to pay plumbers, lawn mowing guy, electrician, mechanics, and all the other "use you when I need you" people in our lives for being "on call".
I think the mob patented that business method, thank god... Or else those groups would use it.. Can see the plumber now.. "Nice Shitter you got there.. sure would be a shame if something happened to it......."
But in reality, many plumbers and other professionals will charge you extra for calling them at 2am on a Sunday, but of course, if your sewer is overflowing, or your heater is dead in January, it doesn't really seem to matter as much.
My brother is a firefighter, works 24 on, 72 off. He is at the station the entire time he is "on call", and never, ever gets called when off duty, unless someone needs to trade shifts. If he has training to do, it is either done during his shift (with obvious breaks for fires) or he gets paid additional to come in during his off time (or gets a 24 hour shift waived as payment, basically trading time)
Is the lawyer thinking of Volunteer firefighters? they usually work their real jobs during the day, and when the call comes, go to work as a firefighter. Many Volunteer departments in rural areas don't pay the firefighters, but do re-imburse them a token amount for mileage when they drive to the scene.
Saying Skype is easier to use than SIP is incorrect, Skype is not a protocol, it is a package. Its kinda like saying Firefox is easier to use than SSH. Skype is a single, isolated environment, with their own way of connecting to phones. SIP is a standard, has ton's more features, and can natively work with most phone systems (including many commercial PBX's from Cisco, Shoretel, Avaya, etc) and is being heavily used and invested in by business. I can show you that a Shoretel or Asterix phone system can in fact be much easier to setup than skype, and much, much more powerful.
Just an FYI, any used Cisco 2600 series router can match those speeds, and you can get them dirt cheap off of ebay or whatever.. We were worried when we went from T1 speeds to 100/100 at work, and just used the second ethernet port in the router, (it came with 2) and it worked like a champ. Granted, I did pull some of the ACL stuff and NAT out of that router, so it could handle those speeds a little better.
I think that is one of the reasons why several companies are trying to get new reactors built on older sites, all the environmental stuff has been looked at and approved before, and the NIMBY crowd can't get as loud about Nukes in their Back yard, when they already have them....
I am a huge fan of Nuclear Power, however, I sometimes wonder if all the irrational fear of Nuclear Power was Good for the industry? I kinda think all the negative attention and scare tactics and stuff made the nuclear industry have to go over and above to continue proving, without doubt, that they were safe..
I'm sure your users with Documented cases of limited vision will appreciate your sending them to get reading glasses.. They will be sure to tell their lawyer that funny joke!
Do you tell your employees in wheel chairs to just carry their own folding ramp to get into the building?
The original question is very valid. I have met people with severe, uncorrectable eye problems. One guy is a very gifted programmer, runs a 21" CRT at 800x600, and sits less then 12" away from the screen to see it. He can't use an LCD, both because changing resolution makes for very sucky text, and because sitting that close to the screen on a monster screen, you start to see the problems with viewing angles on LCD's.
USA wouldn't know anything about fighting such a war where you risk losing your country.
Cmon, thats a bit harsh...
We've lost the war on drugs, the War on poverty, and were working our darndest to lose the war on Terrorism as well!

This is a great thing for the mobile traveler.

and BURN baby....burn!
You bring up a good point.. How are we supposed to have a good, Fahrenheit 451 style book burning, with E-books?
they require way too many accelerants to burn with the same intensity!
Because Cloud Computing signifies the new Paradigm of collaboration in the digital age. It is opening up new avenues of cohesive synergies.

Obviously, they will have to redo their version numbering so that it accepts a 4 digit year. You would think they would have learned from Y2K..

Just short of One Point Twenty one. But they are almost there!

No, but I took a screenshot of his response, and pasted it in a word file. Can I email that to you?
Does it matter which side they are on? They are all owned by Lobbyists, instead of by voters..

Hitler and Stalin have been nominated for the prize, heck, Hitler was time magazine man of the year!
