I bet there are lots of perfectly good cameras thrown away because their proprietary lithium ion batteries lost their capacity and got discontinued.

I have to bet against you. I bet most of the camera's that got thrown out when their original battery died, where binned because the replacement battery was deemed too expensive for a 3-year old camera. That while a new camera 3 times smaller, with 3 times more resolution and lots more nifty features is 'only' a 100$ more expensive than a new battery for the old camera. An old camera who's warranty has expired, and could give out at any time.

(Granted, then there is a SD-card that needs to be bought, and a extra battery, a carry pouch... In the end it will be more expensive an upgrade than at first appearances.)

A question though, are there in fact any slim camera's (say, no larger than a deck of cards) that can run on AAA or AA batteries?

Still. This is a wow moment. Like, wow, google has a lot of computing power. Wow.

Think about it, they just took on the challenge of executing all the javascript on the internet.

It's not a suggestion. It's a potential license violation. And the only way to know for sure you are not violating the license is
    a) audit all commandline parameters of java processes on production machines. (There could be many of those, hundreds, thousands?) or
    b) uninstall Sun JRE or
    c) pay for a support contract

It's simply a audit nightmare waiting to happen. There will be companies purchasing those support contracts just in case. Others will perhaps look to get away from having the Sun JRE binaries available on machines to avoid any employee violating the license.

This is just a attempted money grab from Oracle. Expect license conditions to get more confusing soon.

Maybe there is no encryption of the datafiles? Maybe the developer still wants to include a print report function but hasn't had time yet?
