Oil well depths vary greatly from field to field. It's not uncommon to see 12,000ft wells in most places around the country. Some areas in Wyoming are even hitting 25,000ft wells deep into the Madison Formation. It really depends on the formations and the field.
Tag 1: They got hurt because they did something stupid and/or reckless
Tag 2: They got hurt because someone around them did something stupid and/or reckless
That should cover most things.
If you only knew how the people I've heard called guru's learned to use a spreadsheet or other app you'd ask 'and why were they called guru's?'.
I wish I had mod points for this quote here. I was the Excel "guru" at my last job. All I did was Google things I wanted to learn. Apparently, that's something no one else in the office could figure out.
That's crazy talk. This is Slashdot. Where anything remotely related to Apple or Microsoft must be met with derision! There's no need to bring logic or common sense into the discussion!
I'll admit I pulled that out of a discussion I read about from a publisher. No real facts to back it up. Probably was an overstatement. If you've heard it costs more, I'll buy it.
Actually, even before eBooks, it cost so little to print a book that it was hardly an issue of cost. It costs pennies to print a book. The price you pay for books, even now, goes to other things (cover artist, author, publisher, marketers, etc). Going digital really doesn't save publishers any significant amount of money.
I just got an email from US Bank this morning as well about the data breach with Epsilon. I wonder how many more companies are affected by this one third-party company.
Or does Apple actually seem reasonable in sharing customer data with third parties? You can be a fanboy or anti-fanboy on this, but when's the last time you've seen a major company take a stance on customer privacy? I feel like I've become jaded and just assume every corporation is trying to screw me over and I never expected that THIS would be the reason for the hangup in the negotiations.
If they genuinely made a mistake in their selection of the copyrighted works, and they own up to it and remove it, then they can fix it and move on. Problem solved, end of story. Now, if they're going to be dicks and fight it, well... then we'll have an interesting story. Until then, I find myself giving it a resounding... "Meh..."
God forbid any company would actually contribute taxes to the infrastructure of the countries in which they operate. I mean, that would just make too much sense.
If you seriously need to be that productive and you really can't stand Oracle, then go buy the latest version of MS Office. If you really need to use complex ppt and xls files, then the cost really isn't that bad. Use it until LibreOffice is out of Beta if you have to. Apple has their own work suite too. OpenOffice is the free version. If you can't stand using the free version, go buy one that works for you.
It was quite irritating when you could NOT do it on the disc version. Now that it is there, by comparison to the previous version, it is SIGNIFICANTLY more awesome. By several degrees.
But everything seems to play fine on my PS3. One thing that's awesome is that you can push and hold the left and right and scroll continuously through the lists. Also, it shows 2 horizontal lists instead of one list. Nothing wrong with it, but I'd prefer to be able to choose how it's displayed.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can setup your PayPal account so that it has the ability to deposit money right into your bank account, right? With online banking all the rage nowadays, can you not just transfer the money from your paypal account every week keeping a minimum in there for incidental costs? That way, you can keep your money in your own bank account.
I don't know much about PayPal, but wouldn't that be a viable option instead of keeping say... 600,000 pounds in PayPal?
I agree, my son is 2 years old now and he's been infatuated with gadgets for as long as he's been able to see them. Cell phones, remote controls, computers, anything that turns on. Since he loves the laptops, the best thing we could do was sit with him and show him how to play with it carefully. I suggest Knee Bouncers for a free site that had content for toddlers and younger.
Also, for christmas last year, may parents got him a learning "laptop" for older kids. It was plastic, and looked exactly like a laptop with a keyboard and mouse except it had a cheap LCD screen in the center of the "monitor" section. It's really for older kids so we only let him play with it while we're around because (while they normally shoudln't) it's possible the keys can pop off and a child could swallow it. It's a Blue Hat Teach and Talk Laptop. It was like 15 bucks.
Well, this has been studied before. This isn't anything new. Alcohol in moderation has been proven to reduce lots of types of disease and medical problems in those who only drink a little. The studies form a J-Curve where those who don't drink in a population have a certain number of (Strokes, heart attacks, etc). Those in the population who drink 1-2 drinks a day show a significant lowering of those symptoms. However, those who drink more than 3 drinks per day have a DRASTIC increase as they have more health problems like Cirrhosis of liver and other alcohol related problems. Here's an article from 2004 about the effects of alcohol and strokes and has an image of the J-Curve graph.

*nerd hat off*
If you're posting on Slashdot, I'm pretty sure that hat doesn't come off ;)

Turn the wireless function off
Duh???
I have a better question, why don't they just shoot at the bright red light shining in their eyes?
I guess I should clarify, Apple's policies about sharing customer data seem reasonable

Just scroll down and click the link that says "Previous Page". It takes all of 2 seconds.

Really Tim O'Reilly? Maybe criminalizing mistakes that affect the identity of citizens MIGHT make you more aware so those mistakes don't happen again.

I can't understand why any of you own a PS3 in the first place.
Really? I mean.......really? You can't think of a single reason why anyone would want one?
Well, I googled and found that previous 2004 study, but now, just seconds later when I click on it, it's behind a paywall of some sort. Here's another link from 2007 showing the same graph

Maybe this'll teach Glenn Beck to not piss off Google? :D
