THAT is your personal failing. My wife, who is a masters-degreed engineer will tell you that as well. If you're timid and can't drive a hard bargain in salary negotiations, then tough shit.

I was alluding to the fact that women in all fields, as a group, make 70% of what their male counterparts make. But of course I don't need to tell you that--you're such an expert on this stuff, after all.

And to all the professional women who take time off to have kids and expect to be able to leave early due to little Kristy's soccer game: do not bitch when I get promoted above you. I was on the job doing the deed while you were sucking in that maternity leave.

Wouldn't it be great if men were encouraged to spend equal time raising their children and given equal opportunities to do so? If only there were some kind of movement to promote that idea.

Yeah, let me tell you how great it is to be constantly reminded that my place is in the home. It makes me feel so SUPERIOR. It's a miracle that I can manage to hold down a software development job too, in which my undeniable superiority rakes in 70% as much as the man in the other cube. Thank God for that old school women's lib thing that is obviously no longer necessary.

St. John's Wort has been proven as effective at treating depression as Paxil.

Measurements of depression are based almost exclusively on self-reporting. A simple comparison between the "effectiveness" of St. John's Wort and Paxil--in which an "effect" is just a positive change in self-reported measures--can't account for a belief effect. It's not enough to do double-blind; you also have to find out whether each of the subjects thinks they've been given the substance you're testing, and include that data in your statistical analysis.

I'm not sure what that gender studies remark was all about, but Henninger may have more allies among gender studies scholars than he thinks. They are extremely skeptical of scientists because they often reinforce myths about gender with poor methodology and sloppy interpretations. There is, of course, a faction in gender studies that rejects reproductive biology as a basis for sex, which is just bizarre. But if Henninger is beginning to doubt the credibility of today's scientists based on a perception of bias, he's only reaching a conclusion that those "messy" gender studies scholars have already figured out. (On an unrelated note, I would like to propose a corollary to Godwin's Law: as a discussion about science and politics grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Galileo and the Church approaches 1.)

Like another poster said, this is not about percentages. Watch whenever an article comes up that has any connection, however tenuous, with a woman, and immediately there will be comments--modded all the way up!--about sex. And I'm sorry, but this article is not a troll. This is a serious issue that needs to be openly discussed. Calling this article a troll is absurd, and only proves that most of Slashdot doesn't give a shit about women or women's perspectives. (I'm aware that the writer is a man.) And to claim that Slashdot is neutral? Are you fucking kidding me? This place is thick with racism and sexism.

Stop and think about how that makes women feel, and then maybe you'll understand why comments like this drive us away.

Of course you haven't seen it. That's the point. Just because you personally haven't seen it--or, probably more accurately, didn't notice it--doesn't mean it's not there. But you think that just because you haven't seen something, it doesn't exist. That's the problem.

  10. Oh brother. on FOSS Sexism Claims Met With Ire and Denial · · Score: 4, Insightful
It is quite amusing to read an entire page of comments by men who think that their gender doesn't limit their perspective on this issue. That demonstrates the very root of the problem: maleness is still the default, the essential; a woman's perspective is considered especially different from a man's but the reverse is never true. With very few exceptions, all of the comments on this article reveal an attitude that the male perspective is complete and true while the female perspective is a special subset.

Slashdot is one of the least female-friendly places on the Internet, so this conversation is basically hopeless no matter what. But let me share with you some anti-feminist clichés (courtesy of jezebel.com) so we can at least get them out of the way now.
    1. Feminists can't take a joke. The problem is not that feminists can't take a joke. (We can.) The problem is that you can't take feminists seriously.
    2. Some girls like [X], so it must be okay. Men often disagree on things. Women do too. One woman's disagreement does not invalidate the opinions of every other woman.
    3. Criticizing misogyny is a waste of time. This might actually be true here.
    4. Feminists have no lives. The implication here seems to be that feminists had to have suffered some great personal disappointment. Sorry, no; I just have to endure cat calls from sleazy strangers on my walk to work, get interrupted in meetings (and then get pigeonholed as a bitch for standing up for myself), and frequently have to put up with people who are blind to their own privilege. I really, really wish that my having a life would make this all stop.

This post will no doubt get modded down to -1 practically instantaneously. But I don't care, because this is my industry too, and until you all get it, I won't be silent.

We will always need professional journalists, and there will always be a demand for local news. The newspaper industry as we know it may very well collapse. But in doing so, it will only be making room for a new generation of professional journalism that can exist within the boundaries of the world today. Think of it as the business equivalent of a forest fire.
