  2. big release on Red Hat 7.2 Released · · Score: -1

Well this is obviously a big release for a few reasons. First of all, it is a x.2 release so it is basically as stable as a redhat release gets. Second of all, after visiting their website I expect to see a redhat release for pda's rather soon. They seem to be pushing somekind of one code base for all apps (from pda's to big iron)- I am surprised no one is making any noise about this. If redhat pushed out a version for the ipaq or palm would you use it? What advantage would it have over something like the palm os? or maybe pocket pc (or what ever they are calling win ce now-a-days)? Does having one code base really matter?

They should of definitely waited a week because now there is a major new kernel release (emacs 21) is out now and their OS is going to look completely different. A simple errata is not enough. Just kidding I can't wait to install it- been running 6.2 for what seems like forever. Gonna ditch their GNOME stuff for ximian though and redcarpet.

  8. A threat to mozilla? really? on Konqueror.org Launched - KDE2 Web Browser · · Score: 2

Well first of all, I would like to question what makes it a threat to mozilla? It is all well and good that kde has its own filemanager/browser, things that are pretty standard these days, but will it be a great browser? I personally do not think so. Sure Konqueror will be usable but it will lack the ever important crypto in the source version. Crypto binaries are a option I suppose. But my point is that the a pure Konqueror will not allow the user to order stuff through encrypted channels or even read e-mail in some cases. Perhaps I am missing the whole point in general but why praise a browser that few people have really ever even tried? I would think that less than a tenth of the number of people who have tried a mozilla/netscape 6 release have tried this konqueror thing- it is not battle proven. Since the original post mentioned mozilla, I have to mention that the GNOME team is/has integrated mozilla into their filemanager of the future, nautilus. I know that GNOME has bonobo which is responsible for its component architecture, including the mozilla integration, but I have recently read that KDE 2.0 is suppposed to be highly componentilized also. Is KDE using something like bonobo?

This Garfinkel guys argues that the lack of *NIX and primarily Linux viruses are do to the booming economy. He then goes on to say that when the economy goes south that programmers will become unemployed and create viruses!!! This makes little sense if one was to think about it, just as a convincing of a arguement could be made that the free desktop are going to get better with a bad economy because it gives programmers more time to code on free projects. Even thought Garfinkel does not present a very good arguement, I can understand his concern. Sigh, anti-virus programs slow take up resources and slow down the system;(

Give the man a chance. Spielberg directed "Jurassic Park" and "E.T." which were closer to science fiction than real life drama. In my experience, the wrong people are teaching programming and other computer related classes. At least in my school, the classes were taught by business teachers because they could teach typing, no real training except a hourly seminar here and there. Given my programming teacher did have a programming resume but that only consisted of cobol and her degree was in accounting. My physics teacher, who was the programming teacher before the current one, actually knew a extensive degree of many languages but he quit teaching programming when they hired the accountant!! Does this make any sense?? Why on earth hire a bad employee?? It would of made more sense to of hired a new physics teachers, in my experience a good science teacher is more common than a good computer teacher.

  15. Re:There is no time to teach linux/g++ on Linux & Education - How To Get It For Your School · · Score: 0
I personally believe that ideas like your are just not wrong but also the reason why such a general education system currently sucks all around.

First, let me tackle this c++/linux thing. I took all the programming classes that my high school offered. In each class, we were taught for a good two to three weeks nothing but stupid DOS commands and how to handle the computer. Then after about four weeks, we finally start doing the most simple programs. The reason for this was that it was somewhat of a general class so there were "slow" kids in there. Before you jump all over me for the use of the ever too common phrase "slow kids" please understand what I mean, there were a handful of hardcore geeks and then a bunch of kids that thought it would be an easy class. These classes offered college credits if you paid some dough and passed some pretty simple tests, so there really should of been two classes a regular class and a CP or AP class. But my point is that a.) certainly the right high school class could quickly be taught *NIX envirnment and b.) a lot of time is spent learning how to get around the OS.

Second of all, the idea have expressed is very wrong. A summary of what you said could be expressed as "It is just high school." Your way of thinking will eventually progress to something like "It is only college, I can really learn it when I get a job and can focus on it."
