I think so, it hogs up all my memory on one a porn script that accesses local files. Way back when, perhaps it was M10, I was able to get that porn script to fully load in under 40 seconds- but now it just eats up all my memory until there is none left. Once all my memory is gone, the system is unresponsive and it requires a power cycle to get things to work again. A better file system would speed that power cycle along a bit.
My school has put a ban on "mp3 technologies"- I really do not know what that means. I could mean mp3's and any software used to create and or obtain mp3's. I have not rocked the boat and asked because I live off-campus and do not deal with that stuff on campus.
People like you are going to keep the open source movement from advancing. The community is basically a good bunch of saps, but then there are people like you that think everything should be free and give a bad name to the rest of us.
Open source has gotten a lot of attention lately not because it is economically free, but because companies/people are profitting off of it. Open source is more than anything else a paradigm shift for the future. Yes a lot software is economically free, but if people can not make money off of it- then the support will evaporate. You are insane to request free hardware, if you want free computer time then go to some library/community center.
I have thought about getting a new account since i saw the light and went legit, but I do not think it is right. I really made a mess of my karma and now I am paying for it- but people are taking me seriously and my karma is starting to come around.
His expresses quite a bit about his java views on his faq page. Look under the question thatgoes something like "If you hadn't designed c++ is Java the language you would of like to of made." He right away says no and explains that java is not really platform independent and a whole bunch of other goo.
I am currently a first-year comp-sci student who is learning/learned c++. The book(s) that I have used have in my opinion sucked and did not explain templates at all. Can anyone suggest a good c++ book? I understand that Bjarne's book, whatever the name is, is not a pure programming book- but would his book help me understand templates?
GMC is not "very nice." GMC is being replaced because it is not very nice. GMC may appear nice to a regular user, but one must realize that it is buggy as hell still. Miguel has publically said that the one big mistake that he made was using Midnight Commander for GNOME. Midnight Commander is/was a great command file manager but that is where it stops. Example: start up gmc and try to exit with the hotkeys (wham!- nothing). Example: Sometimes I am in the mood to preview a few gtk themes and almost always gmc fails along the way (change the theme a few times then do a right mouse click to bring up the menu- is it right?).
Well first of, let me say that I have to use MS Word for school all the time and it sucks big time. Now since I got that out of the way I can continue.
Bussiness wise, it only makes sense for people to start looking at a free operatoring system to use- if it saves money, I think it is a advantage. There recently has been a huge influx of X/Linux office procucts because it is unchartered or un-dominated ground. Both Corel and Sun have office software for linux. KDE is developing a office suite and most interestingly I have heard rumors that Helix Code formed more to develope a office product than to extend gnome (though they do that too). The Gnome/Helix Code office product seems the most intriguing to me because it seems they are looking to copy MS Office. Even the fine goofy details like Visual Basic in Word they are working on (check it out at www.gnome.org/gb)!! Way back in the golden days, MS was slow to the word-processing game (which became the office software game) but they stole and cheated as always.
Why recongnize all the trolls? I do not even think that hot grits guy is that long term of a troll. CmdrTaco should make it clear to all that it is not Commander Taco but really Commodore Taco.

Yes, choice is good. If you were willing to get a little abstract, one could argue that open source presents choices because it allows the user to change/improve the code.
As for the GNOMEvsKDE thing, I try to stay out of it- but I will give my opinion just this once. KDE was started first and because of the license of the KDE's preferred toolkit, GNOME was started. GNOME is the Free Software Foundations answer to KDE. Besides being all free software, GNOME has a very different internal design than KDE.
As far as internal design goes, GNOME has better design theory but the implementation is truly not complete. As for externals, GNOME is really more advanced though I give the nod to KDE here. Even though GNOME has better theme support (I never tried the goodies in KDE 1.1.2 so please forgive me) and more pleasing to the eye, KDE has a more defined look and more uniform interface- so that is why KDE barely wins out on the externals. I have never tried KRASH or know anything about KDE 2.0 but it is my opinion that KDE is losing ground to GNOME even though KDE seems to be getting more users.
The article explains that a bunch of old Apple/Mac programmers are more or less incharge of interface for GNOME 2.0 (as far as the file manager and back processes of the file manager) and that HelixCode is incharge of the internal "plumbing." It also said that HelixCode is really looking to put together a office suite.
Well, I admit that it is pretty easy to go between GNOME and KDE. I have only used KDE a handful of times but it was not a unpleasant experience.
I do not see what is so difficult to understand about GNOME but some people just do not understand it. I read a article the other day by some one named Dru Lee Parsec who does not understand GNOME at all but understands KDE. I really should be writing articles because the loonies they have writing the articles never understand.
I am afraid that people are going to start complaining again that/. favors the GPL and GNOME and BLAH BLAH BLAH.
Though I admit that the current MacOS leaves something to be desired please remember MacOS X is coming. MacOS X is a major overhaul. MacOS X is supposed to be based on some BSD (I do not remember which) and the simple gui of MacOS past has been revamped.
Even if MacOS X is not up your tree it might mean that drivers and other shit will be more readily available.
What has happened to that infamous/. quality control? Slashdot had to call me "a reader" when they accepted my submitted story because of my name but they are willing to accepted bogus links?
My "a reader" identity can be seen at this story, I am surprised they even gave me the standard karma bonus of a submitted story.
It is also the first distrib to contain packages from miguel's company Helix Code. The packages are of course of GNOME. The Helix Code crew saw it fit to include my favorite window manager sawmill in with their packages!!
Those bloody bastards at M$ are at it again. Well sounds like they are blaming the plain old UNIX design. But thanks to good old Windoze devolution you can still be safe!!
Devolution because they clearly went against all design principal up to that time, in favour of creating their own. It kind of reminds me of Frankenstein- devolution.
The story really was not about Mozilla but about Jamie. The story mentions Jamie and how he deserted Mozilla but that is about it on the Mozilla front. It also talks about how he forked emacs developement because he did not like some things.
The story is mostly about Jamie's attempt to purchase some club called DNA or something similar. I can't help but remember that Microsoft is touting some "new" technology that they are calling DNA something or another. Think the two are connected?
My university's library uses a stupid IE setup where you can get access to any www address as long as it does not have a document suffix like html or shtml. Such a site as http://ffcol.com/chat/chat2.htm is not allowed because it is missing the www and because it has that htm ending. But nterestingly, this setup only seems to work if you type in the address because links and what not are unaffected. If I knew anything about making webpages and what not, I would make a page that would let the user type in a address and prvide a link (not a search engine).
Rob was portrayed as kinda being a sad/depressed. They take about this great contract that the dude has but put some grim spin on things. We need another/. Rob Malda Interview- that will settle things.
They do not understand the break up. Microsoft has been pretty good at pretending just to be Big Business that government says cannot exists. People really have something against the government controlling their lives. That government factor can is even evident in our geek culture with our privacy issues and all our goofy licenses that we use. I guess if someone pays x% of their income they want it spent on something important and not a "meaningless" trial but on Presidential Aids.
Interestingly, Bill Gates did a Larry King interview earlier this year (I think on Jan 1) where a caller called in and asked Bill about the monopoly ruling (not so much the trial). The caller explained that he felt that he needed all of the MS products because they were great and blah blah blah. Bill just said that he was baffled and blah blah blah but I think the answer was in the question. Why would the caller need all MS products? Common sense is lacking.
99.9% of statistics are unrelated to the real world
I believe that the poll could be quite legitamate in the terms of the where world. Like it or not, the truly computer literate is very small number so when the masses see the newest Windows, or whatever, and has been blessed by such computer "literate gurus" as Bill Gates and Mindcraft it has to be good. The poll in a way just shows that we are in elite company!
All this survey means is that MS is able to portray itself as a good company to the average joe. The ever popular Mom OS for people has be considered Windows- and people think they understand that "easy" concept of Windows. Your average joe just accepts the crashes and bugs because he experience does not make him expect more.
Of course, the survey is really showing how many people think a successful company is a good company. These are the people that Linus talks about being negative towards Linux because it is free. People just go to a store and see that all the computers have Windows on them and they go to your average computer lab and see more Windows then they think that Windows has to be pretty good.
You would be surprised how many people out ther do not realize that there is life past MS. When I mention to people that I do not prefer Windows they look at me ask is I am using somekind of MS DOS. Your average dude does not care so much about the software as long as it kinda works. Besides, we are kinda living in a backwards world today because people are blaming things on those "dumb computers" but they do not know the problem so it is always generalizd.
Does anybody remember what happened to that Canadain groundhog a year ago? I think it was in Wharton? The creature may of been all white? All I remember is that it died. Please help- I have to do a report on groundhog's day and do not remember.
Who is Capt Tofu? He is the guy responsible for all of the post on Slashcode.com but his link is just a link back to Slashcode.com. Besides being a little redundant the link adds some mystery. Is Tofu Rob's alter-ego?
There is at least one known bug for XMMS 1.0.0. The XMMS website says:
If you own a Aureal soundcard and are using the Aureal drivers, XMMS 1.0.0 will not work. This bug has been fixed in CVS and XMMS 1.0.1 will be released later today.
