I think people confuse Star War's excellent execution with its story. Lets face it, the story is very basic, nothing new. However, the characters are all believable, we care about what happens to them, etc. Its quite simply a well executed simple story. It would be insulting to compare this simple plot with scifi masters such as Asimov, Clarke, etc. Even though Star Wars may have an epic feeling to it, I think it lacks the complexity found in scifi. Scifi stories question our assumption of things such as society, social conditioning, technology, morals, etc but Star Wars really did not (as was not intented) to do any of these. Much like most Stephen Speilberg or Jerry Bruckheimer films, what you see is what you get; these movies are intended for the general audience and hand everything to you on a silver platter. Don't bother trying to find deeper meaning in them, just enjoy them for what they are: entertaining movies. If you want to examine humanity through film, watch a Kubrick, Aronofsky, etc film.
Oh yea, I forgot to mention, skimping on these sort of things for money is dumb because by using jury-rigged methods such as this, you usually end up spending MUCH more in hardware replacement costs. All it takes is a couple drops and could easily blow every component attached to the mobo (which is pretty much everything). Watercooling is not the sort of thing you cheap-out on since the consequences can rack up in cost pretty quick.
As someone who has built his own homemade watercooler, this setup is very jury-rigged and definately not recommended for any sort of serious long term cooling. The copper-tube inlets need to be replaced w/ brass fittings to avoid leakage, and the rubber bands should be replaced with cheap and much more effective band clamps. This waterblock design is not effective water-distrobution wise either as the water is not forced to flow through out the entire design. This would let the side furthest the inlets get hot due to poor water flow. An open chamber is only good for small waterblocks. Lastly, using thread to attach a waterblock to the cpu is ghetto as hell. Either quickly engineer a heatsink clamp yourself, or just look up a guide on the net for this, its pretty simple. Watercooling is one of those things that can be done many different ways, but this particular method is a little more 'amature' than is recommended to put on any piece of equipment that you value. If you are going to take the time to make your own watercooling, also take the time to make sure its engineered right.
I actually downloaded this movie since I highly doubted it was going to be worth $10 price tag. I turned it on and watch it with a friend of mine, and just watched the suckage happen before our eyes. The intro was lame, foreshadowing the rest of the movie. Once you see that they actually brought Whistler back, at that point I questioned whether the writer had even seen the original movie. Due to the ambigously-gay squadron of 'badasses' a lot of the fight scenes just seemed to be cheesy as all hell. Oh, and the second half of the movie was busted due to a corrupted vcd, but to tell you the truth, I didn't care all that much. Perhaps I am being judgemental, only having seen the first half of the movie, but somehow I doubt all of a sudden the movie would kickass. I'm still wondering how they managed to screw this up. Anyone?
I completely agree, if I go to work, school, etc all day, why the hell would I want to play a game *in my spare time* that is repeating these very same things, only with a little more fustration ("YOU BASTARD, I DON'T CARE IF YOUR DEPRESSED, GET A JOB!"). Though I have to admit it was fun systematically killing everyone in the neighborhood by surrounding them with chairs.
Personally, I think Apple takes the crown for advertising the Mac as being 2x faster than PCs. Though they dont technically lie, the way they present their data is the same thing, and 95% of people do not read the legal text on the bottom of the pretty graphs that says 'Determined with a a suite of photoshop tests'. I have to hand it to apple, they have some of the best PR and advertising people out there; after all, who else could sell hardware thats 6+ months behind PC, present it as spanking new with a $2k+ price tag! For some reason people see Apple as being a good corperation, not like the evil variety such as MS; they pay their PR people good money to keep up the facade. The mac is definately double plus good. No really.
Back when I worked for my HS as a computer tech, we had this vacuum cleaner that had bi-directional air feeds, and also a nozzle addon that had the perfect diameter for cleaning keyboards. I forget the name of it, but it was about 1.5' tall x 7" diameter (shaped like a cylinder) and could clean a KB w/o too much problems. However, for those deep-seated pubes and coke/coffee stains, your gonna have to get a little nasty and start taking buttons off.
Not only can I get ripped off for an iPod, I can get ripped off of for a designer carrying case for it too! Such amazing innovation. Im not normally someone to complain, but this definately does not belong on slashdot. If I wanted to read about tech fashion accessories that are overpriced, I'd read Wired.
I really doubt we needed an review of these movie as it was pretty obvious it was a twisted, hollywoodified, piece of crap version of a great story. Just look at the poster alone, the main character looks like someone from a CK commercial, theres a scantily clad chick in the background... as soon as you try to sell sex in a scifi film, 100% maximal suckage garanteed. Then the previews: everything is super duper action packed, theres CG all over the place, everything is flashing by mad fast, etc... Action packed? WTF, no need to even say anything on this one, and the fact it has CG means exactly jackshit, after all ANY hollywood-class film will be able to scrape up some money to have CG. And the excuse "I just wanted to see it for the CG" is weak as hell; You could say that about FF, Mummy2, Monsters Inc, etc, but NOT for this steaming pill. If you actually spent $9 to see this for just CG, I'd say that was pretty dumb. Sorry for the ranting, but this movie's existance angers me, especially the fact they took a great story and blantantly butchered it hollywood style.
The Nazi regime was horrible, but it is far more more dangerous to try to 'ignore' it. Those who are committed to forgetting history are bound to repeat it. Don't follow the path of ignorance.
Yet another 'uncopyable' cd format. The way I see it, they're actually screwing themselves, because now people will crack & rip mp3s AND still be able to get their money back. Lets hope this one backfires on the RIAA real quick.
Currently I am attending college for a degree in 3D animation, and almost all emphasis is being placed on the individual effort. I have not had a single project so far that involved a group. Maybe this is because of the singular nature of art in general, but once you leave the classroom and goto the 3D studio environment, you're always working in a group. No one person models, textures, lights, animates, etc an entire scene in a movie; thats done by a group of people, varying in numbers. Most of the emphasis is placed upon your personal abilities with the software (in this case Maya), so its unfortunate we will not have a group project where we can see what its like to work with a group, and the advantages and disadvantages of each system. I guess they expect us just to learn on our own once we get into the field on our own.
I looked out my apt window this morning and saw guys wearing army fatigues with Colt M4's directing traffic. Once I managed to get my dialup to connect (kept dropping for obvious reasons) I stayed connected long enough to find out that two planes had flown into the WTC. From there, everything seemed to be fake. I mean, shit these are the two symbols of America. Who the hell could knock them down? Several hours later I walked downtown with a friend to see it all for myself. The streets were empty, eminating the feeling of loss. Once we got close enough, there were cars all over that were smashed to varying degrees, covered in dust, papers blowing across the streets. It was a scene out of a movie as many have said. Too bad it isnt. I hope swift justice comes for those who are resposible for this act of disgusting terrorism.
Its pretty sad that they put 5 years of work into this, and and the best they could come up with story wise, was this. Right right, being in an art school for film, all we ever hear is about how story/plot comes first. Story is the foundation for the entire movies, without even the movie's best aspects start to dim and falter in light of the bleak and boring story. Great animation is good, but a great story is better. Even movies that story wise aren't that revolutionary (Star Wars, Shrek, etc) are good because they story (though they'be been done many a time before) was very well executed, and you don't feel like your watching the same old crap over again. Toy Story (1 & 2) was great, and not just because of the great animation, but because of the life those characters had and the story they all took part in. Most people claim FF3 to be the best FF overall, not FF7, 8, etc. And it wasnt because of the 'astounding' graphics (the original FF games were never that great graphic wise), it was because it had kick ass story line that kept you hooked and playing to the end. You cared bout those characters, and wanted them to live. Too bad, maybe next time they won't write the script as an after thought...
Theres one thing people are forgetting here: the principal. If he is in any way human, he probably feels like an utter piece of shit right now, as he is directly responsible for the suicide. In fact, he basically killed him (metaphorically speaking). I bet that right now he is feeling ever so regretful that he ever uttered those fateful words. This will probably serve as a warning to other administrators who threaten such things. Hopefully...
Though there are great implications for what this could do outside of warfare, it is a little dissappointing that the most obvious and immediate uses of this technology will be used for war puposes. There are a whole slew of things this could be used for in the commercial sector.
1. Distributed.net: Crack the encryption before you can actually hit the key
2. 3D: Real time rendering in the palm of your hand.
The power of this technology is friggen sick. I hope we put it to a good use, like porn hosting... You can never get enough porn. No such thing as too much porn. Usually.
They want to run this software, but yet they have not done a systematic search for any bugs or security holes? What the hell is the FBI thinking? "We want to spy on your insecure software with our really insecure software... And hope no one else joins us in spying on you..."
RoadRunner service in NYC is rediculous. We pay insane prices and get horrible service. I can't stay connected to IRC for anymore than 4 hours without getting disconnected. Sometimes theres no internet access at all. If you call up and ask whats up, they always say 'Theres an outage...' Perhaps if more competition is introduced in the area, maybe cheaper DSL, TimeWarner will shape up but I doubt it...

In New York City we pay $50/mo ($40 if you have TW services already) 250Kbs / 45Kbs.

I would think its a bit higher than that. All the employees where I work are always stressed out and depressed ;] Guess we should all quit...
