Seriously though, I wonder how long it will be until Ballmer will be throwing chairs at closed-source solutions. I can see MS doing quite well with this new model, and any move to go back to the closed-source will result in fits from Ballmer.
I used to always joke with IBM, you know, we were opening up the desktop to them, and they were opening up the mainframe and the data center to us. And who out-hustled who is a big deal in terms of who wins.
Is it me, or does this guy appear to not differ that much from, say, your average used car salesman.
uh....its either that, or they just like making money at 18% interest. Perhaps you chalk up more credit to your government than its worth. I prefer live by Occam's razor, and the older I get, the less prone I am to... delusional thinking. Or maybe, you're winston smith, and I'm part of the inner party. You dropped your tinfoil hat.
heh, I think this is an area that needs to be worked on in IT. I'm not sure why the company deems IT workers not worthy enough to receive a pension. For me, I won't even consider working for companies that doesn't pay me a pension.
I think it has something to do with the mentality of "Just lucky to have a job" combined with your average IT employee having zero negotiating skills.
I'm a sucker for these kinds of posts. I have worked for a global oil and gas software dev company (worst experience of my short life) and I can honestly say, there is more oil out there than we know what to do with. That being said, I can't wait for an alternative.
Also as a side note, would it not be easier to move and store mass quantities of H2 compared to hydro-carbon derivatives? If so, then I can imagine starting to put reservoirs on the moon, for limited colonization.
This is interesting. Why hire young? Whats wrong with older, more experienced programmers? I can see the draw towards youthful exuberance, but no one in my company under the age of 40 touches our main programming components.
Poaching brings another question, if you don't mind. I was poached, and it changed my opinion a bit on company to employee loyalty and vice versa. Is there a concern, that if your newly poached employee could be poached right back out again by a different company?
Once again proving that as humans evolve, we become less able to cope with our changing environment. Arguably, this one trait is the only reason we've made it as far as we have. How long before these poeple are put on some extinction list somewhere.
I know, sounds cold, but lets stop suffering the stupid people.
On another note I'm an Oracle DBA but I ain't dressing like this?! http://www.dba-oracle.com/dress_code.htm ; The sad thing is I think he's serious
Agreed. I'm never giving up my hoodie and sandals:)
Alexey who? So, this guy writes this game in the mid-eighties, consisting of coloured blocks, and then fancies himself some sort of expert on the industry as a whole? Commenting on Oracle and Redhat? Its like asking Albert Einstein what he thinks about the state of american politics.
Hardly Alex, go pick up one of the chairs you just threw and sit back down.
Preach it brother. I haven't watched TV in years. I did manage to catch a bit at my gf's parents house the other day, and it was shocking to see how much were actually ads. I completely agree with lack of content. I often wonder how many others think like me, and I have concluded, that not many, because otherwise the high cost of pitching these ad's would bankrupt the parent companies.
My friends have countered with the argument, that even though I'm avoiding these products, others are not, ergo the marketplace only offers products that have been advertised. In this way, it is impossible for me to purchase a product that has not been aggressively marketed, otherwise it wouldn't be in the store.
I counter back, that I just spend a bit more time, avoiding the products that offend me the most, and resign myself in a small part to purchasing whatever toothpaste or detergent I do go with.
You are entitled to your opinion of course. For me, I like simplicity of art. I hate stickers, or random advertisements placed in reckless abandon, covering that what could be considered beautiful.
Most of all, I miss clear hockey ice, with white boards:)
Hey MS, hows this for a new marketing strategy... none! This is what I do: I actively monitor all the ads that I am subjected to, then I inform my friends, and avoid these products like the plague.
I play CS religiously, and I'd have to say, I've never felt "good" about dying... especially early in the round. Perhaps there can be a correlation between players who enjoyed dying and the amount of time till respawn.
I relate CS to golf. Good fun once you get good at it, but incredibly frustrating for those who lack "good golf clubs" and experience.
The article, or anyone else's comments (as per slashdot regulations), however, if anyone is storing my medical information, I'd prefer it to be google instead of some lowbrow, bottom-dollar dealing company, storing the data in some obscure version of DB2, where the admin FTP's in to do routine maintenance.
Special Note: I work in the medical information field.

But we're all lawyers here on slashdot. and engineers.
no, its not vulnerable, it was designed that way.
Yeah, these people are contradicting evolution alright.
Is it me, or does this guy appear to not differ that much from, say, your average used car salesman.
I dunno, it took over 7million years and the second greatest computer of all time to come up with that answer.
Doesn't seem overly simple to me.
quack quack.

Ergo, the computer

I'm not sure, but I think its a synonym of the word 'pension'
Oh, and I'll get off your lawn when you make sure you turn off your damn sprinkler before 9pm

So, like slashdot?

ahahahahah ahhhh man, thats fscking great, just what I needed. We should update wiki and maybe this will stick and become popular culture.

The amount I buy products is inversely related to how much they are marketed to me. So yes.

Hmm, interesting. I'd like to purchase one of your squirrel-powered cars, and a litre of your finest snake oil, sir!
