  1. Re:Do we just become numb? on Doctorow Tears Up ISP Contract Over Net Neutrality · · Score: 4, Interesting

I think that corporations rely on the apathy of the masses. Rallying points were important when people started unions and women got to vote. But once a society gets to a sustainable level of comfort those people will do nothing that risks that comfort.

People stood up to corporate greed when they abolished sweats shops. In fact they just moved the sweat shops to a less noticeable location. Once rediscovered those same ppl who once fought against sweat shops just said: "meh, not my worry" and went home to their 2.5 kids and 2 car garages.

Apathy is a wonderful way to keep the masses controlled. It works far better than any chain or enslavement could have.

Some may find that twisted... but others would just say: "he finally did it. Damn him all to hell."

Next up: Apple sues every gay pride organization and person wearing a rainbow for their old (shitty) logo infringement.

After that: Apple will sue the Universe for Mercury, Silver, Nickel, Tin, Aluminum and Lead all using the colour silver, an obvious infringement upon their new logo.

I suppose Jobs will start suing anyone who wears a turtleneck while giving Keynote presentations.

Please someone (namely the judges), stop the madness.

They're just protecting the world from terrorists. You know those people who dupe the public into thinking that their personal information is their private information. And then they go and use it against them or, barring that, use it in a "fair use" marketing campaign and never pay for or ask the user for their permission. I believe Adobe will DO NO HARM just like all those other really cool companies with no ulterior motives that want to make the world one big hug fest.

    3. Bubonic plague did not, in it's relatively short lifespan, produce any significant selection process. It did, however, help facilitate certain factors. One of which is the proliferation of the Delta 32 marker. Without the plague there would be even less numbers of people with that marker today.

People who survived the Plague in Europe either did not encounter it or almost universally had a genetic anomaly commonly referred to as the delta-32 marker. Their ancestors survive other diseases because of this causing what amounts to an odd protein binding issue on the cellular level. Those people are also naturally immune to HIV.
