  1. 40,000 year old intact human? on Baby Mammoth Found Intact · · Score: 1

Ozzie was preserved pretty well frozen too, but is only 5000 some years old, slightly older than the oldest desert mummies. Maybe global warming will reveal a human who fell into a crevice and froze to death tens of thousands of years ago. One of side-effects of global warming.

  2. I had to take "software export course" - hypocrisy on US Military Leaks its Secrets Online · · Score: 1

Our software company management decided to become very rigorous about software security standards, and so are many of our customers which are Fortune 100 companies. It feels like you are in communist country where nearly anything can be a "state secret". Our software has lots of dependencies on third party libraries, open source, and GPLs which is a landmine here. For example theres a fear terrorists might steal the encryption code in the license manager to send unbreakable messages, etc. Or that competitors will discover a legal flaw in code and sue to block it.
It is very amusing the governement cant even come close to what it imposes on private industry in terms of protection.
And do agree its valuable to be fully aware whats in your code.

  3. safer tobacco delivery systems on Nicotine Is the New Wonder Drug · · Score: 1

According to a PBS special, the dangerous carcinogens are creating in two places in the current smoking cycle: curing the tobacco and burning it in a cigarette. Safer ways of curing are known, but not as efficient or fragrant. And if you "steam" tobacco rather than burn it you get all the nicotine and flaver and much fewer carcinogens. Cigarette companies experimented with such devices, but they are awkward.

Vitalism contends there is some important constitute to life outside of known chemistry and physics. Some "neo-vitalists" claim life can only come from existing life, or some pattern thereof. Others claim mysterious new phsice like quantum microtubes, etc.

  9. text entry needs work on MacBooks to Feature iPhone's Multi-Touch? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I loved what multi-touch does for iPhone multi-media management. But the most difficult thing on the iPhone is typing text. This is less of an issue when the display reaches six inches or so.

  19. "bottom feeder" strategy on Michael Moore's New Film Leaked To BitTorrent · · Score: 1

I have a number of acquaintances who've gone this route: stay officially poor, take advantge of free medicare, disability, supplemental social security; maybe some hidden income on the side, gifts from relatives. Its possible to have decent life. Sometimes people feel trpped in this rut. Often theres some rationalization: "it free and its there", "the gov'ment screwed me or some relation and I getting my dues", etc. Some of these acquaintences were AIDs patients or illegal immigrants, some from middle class Anglo families. I usually have mixed feelings: sometimes resentment, other times "for the grace god goes I", etc.

If they dont increase the premium a lot in a year, then they raise the deductable or co-pay percentage. Extrapolating into the future to medicare age, the amount is like the "grains of rice on the chessboard" - astronomical. Medicare isnt so great either, its costs are increasing rapidly too.

The flash memory driver in the Martian Rovers had a bad free-list routine which shut them down for several weeks near the beginning of their mission after the flash memory filled up.
