  1. I loved his defense! on 20 Years For Gonzalez In TJX Hacker Case · · Score: 1

Defense lawyers said he should get off because he was ill with Asperger's syndrome. That would be a "free get of jail card" for half of us here (at least me).

  2. not proven cant interbreed with chimps on New Ancient Human Identified · · Score: 1

The experiments are so abhorent its urban legend whether they have been tried or not. Horse & donkey, lion & tiger are further apart genetically than human and chimp and produce offspring. And one of those pairs has different chromosome counts, like humans and chimps.
So I'd expect humna-Neaderanthal breeding possible and possibly this new discovery.

  3. OMG! what if government learns my name on Will Your Answers To the Census Stay Private? · · Score: 1

The only surprising thing is that they cant do an automatic census for 80% of the population they know for sure already.

  4. Battle of two Big Brothers on Sergey Brin On Google and China · · Score: 1

Big Google versus Big China. Both have totalitarian control over domains. Both claim to be "benevolent" and deny the other's claim. I wonder if Orwell could ever foresee this. There have been scifi novels/movies about EITHER corporate totalitarianism or government totalitarianism but not BOTH together.

  7. characters are made of sub-parts on Memorizing Language / Spelling Techniques? · · Score: 1

And not just the radical (dictionary lookup) part. I wish all my teachers had named the parts from the start. But you gradually learn their names. Then you sort of remember character X is made up of the water and water and po-sounding part and so on.
After a while you dont think of parts, but the "gestalt" or entirety. Same thing happens in English reading. You see the whole word, its length, the ascending and descending parts, the first and final letters. Theres a trick text going around where the interior letters in English words are scrambled and its fairly easy to learn because you see the whole word instead of each letter after a few years of reading.

  8. about 1/3 phonetic on Memorizing Language / Spelling Techniques? · · Score: 1

The non-radical part is often pronounced the same in multiple characters it appears, particularly for newer words or characters. This happened in older times, too. But pronunciations diverged with time, particularly after the Mongols mangled the northern dialect. I can often guess the pronunciation of character I havent seen.
Unfortunately, I dont know if there a way to teach this. You just observe the sound patterns as you learn characters.

  9. imdb says she is in Hobbit movie on Filming For The Hobbit Begins In July · · Score: 1

The screenplay writer, Mrs. Jackson, expanded the role of female characters in the Lord of Rings, I presume to add balance. It appears they are doing the same for the Hobbit. The Hobbit novel is even more all-male than LOTR.

  10. tore up street eight times in 1990s to add fiber on YouTube's Bandwidth Bill May be Zero · · Score: 1

The telcom companies seemed to have the street in my office park in a perpetual state of construction during the dot.com boom. First we'd see all the different paint mark symbols from the utilities and previous fiber. Then came the new digging. There must be a ton of dark stuff still around.

According to a 60 Minutes piece, the technology was still in the research stage and not up to snuff. The desert environment was brutal on the devices. There is no power or communications infrastructure in these area, so that all had to be added. Desert wildlife set the alarms off. There were many potential points of failure. Perhaps we should have hired the Israelis.
