As the person who wrote the original post it is neither a troll nor offtopic. Its my opinion. That being said I did not in any way expect it to modded up.
People are complaining about the HDTV. I simply suggested that you not buy one. Its a form of civil protest, not buying things. Its very much on topic. If I called someone names for owning a TV then it would be a troll. It was my 2 cents and not particularly intresting IMHO.
I remember sitting through a class given by an hr person telling us how california (at the time I lived there), would ignore statements like that. You still have a right to sue. Amazingly however I still got the similar contract when they had there second round of layoffs. I signed it and took my severance to the bank. I dont have any reason to sue.
This of course was another of the many failed dotcoms and they didnt end up making payroll a few weeks later so I was happy to get my check and that it had cleared when it truely fell apart.
My advice is, if a company is truely a failing dotcom and doesnt look like they are gonna pull out of the downward spiral is sign it. Take the money, and hope it clears the bank before they truely run out of money. It happens more often then you think.
On the other hand if you have cause to sue them and think you will get something more and can stand to lose the severance more power to you. Just remember that if there totaly broke 6 weeks from now and your case still isnt done in court you can probably kiss any settlement or decision by the courts goodbye.
>Shouldn't they be getting in trouble themselves for either 1, downloading kiddie pr0n, or 2, compairing the images to a database collection of kiddie pr0n the've collected over the years?
You forgot intellectal property laws. Someone took that picture. It might by copyrighted. If you cut it in half you have altered the artists original work. Thats illegal too.
>The federal law says that they have to cause damage via unauthorized, or under-authorized access, or intend to cause damage to be guilty of federal computer fraud crimes.
Oh the irony of conflicting articles. If these folks arent causing damage by stealing bandwidth then perhaps the earlier today article about warchalking has had a determination made as well.
Unless you are a lawyer you cant have your cake and eat it too. These guys are stealing bandwidth by probing, so are the war chalkers. So either they are all criminal or they are all not.
> Also, private institutions can get around some of the restraints on government law enforcement (search/seizure, entering without a warrent, etc). This is why bounty hunters can be very useful at times.
True, but 99.9% of the usage of bounty hunters is not by law enforcement. Sure there are nice price tags on folks on the top 10 but the feds encourage people not to go after them.
Bounty hunters are generally employeed by Bail agents. When someone fails to appear in court the bail agent offers a percentage of ammount in return for the apprehension of the individual and the return of the bond.
sorry, watched a cool special on TLC a few weeks ago about bounty hunters.
> Can't somebody just embed a virus in an image that mails the personal info of these perverts to the FBI or something? - phorm
In an image no. Viruses imbedded in images are pretty pictures. I think I can find a picture of ebola for you. Good news. The picture wont make you sick.
In an mpeg file however is another story. You can force someone to automaticly load a website from an mpeg file. Easy way for the feds to log whos looking at the kiddie porn. This is not a virus but part of the mpeg standard so not illegal.
Also it was a while ago but there was a virus released that was imbedded in in a "kiddie porn" executable which sent personal information from the machine infected to, and dont quote me on this, scottland yard, it was to the brits im pretty sure at any rate. Because it infected the machine with a virus that collected data and sent it out it didnt make any friends with the cops it informed either and the virus scanners scan for it.
I used to work for a large usenet provider. One day they decided to shut down the known kiddie porn newsgroups which I cant argue with. Beyond being deplorable if you know about it and dont do anything about it you lose your common carrier status protections. for the next few weeks we would get calls about how "I cant access one of the newsgroups I used to read". We'd eventually get out of them which newsgroup and which point they would happily give us there username and there address for verification. This was popular with the feds. Morons.
Ok, all humor aside this Mike fellows a major dick IMHO. He doesnt agree with the law but he'll make a quick buck off it. Sounds like he and the law get along splendly. He gets lots of death threats? Thats the problem with todays kids, no follow through.
If he doesnt agree with the law thats fine. But to say you dont agree with it and then act on its behalf makes your an immoral sellout.
Agreed with you on that matter. I think liability of any actions on said left open network should fall to the network owner. If company X leaves there network wide open and hacker Y or zero cool or whatever uses it to cause damage then the company should be liable for the damages.
On the flip side I dont think there are teaming masses of young hackers going out trying to take down the Internet using open wireless nodes. It will happen but I suspect most of the folks using wardialers and following the chalk are just checking email and reading slashdot.
Me I care note, I have an IR port on my phone and notebook and it works like a champ. Ok im not downloading the porn at high speed but I can get my email and Im sure I have a few cds of porn around here somewhere.
But I still have to go with my original thought of "When walking into a public restroom with only one toilet and no stall walls lock the door, otherwise dont be upset when someone walks in".
I admit to allowing it to happen on more then one occasion. Ok, maybe not U and R but I have slipped acroynms from the net into papers and back when I ran my mud I even used the word laugh to indicate I found something funny.
Perhaps its an indicator that the real world has lost appeal to people. That they cease to find the normal world appealing. Easy to have happen with all this pro corperate anti human crap we see every day in the news. With the United states in the crapper its little wonder that these kids spend hours online hiding behind a viel of semianonymity being who they want to be with only minor fear they might be discovered or worse, tracked into some marketing database.
Ok, Its bad in school, its bad if your technical writer. Im neither, and If I slip a netslang into an email to a coworker my coworker will know what I mean (oh yeah, Im retired, i dont have any).
Correct the kids when they do it. They and I live in different world because you've made yours suck.
Its supposed to be a realistic life simulator. You know, Buy a house, pay bills, go to work buy the wide screen tv and download the skin textures to make the women run around naked.
Why shouldnt they market to people. Just adds more realism. Me? I havent found any guns or explosives in the sims so I quit playing. Would be fun to go through and gun down all those happy sims but apprently it wasnt thought of.
Btw, Video games didnt make me violent, I was f***ed up before I started playing games.
Ok. So this idiot configed his server to trust what people say thier domain name is. Shhh. Big suprise to most of us. Spammers lie.
While on my domain server I havent a problem I have had a problem with people spoofing email spam from my yahoo account. If you allow people to spoof from your domain you deserve a blacklisting.
Limit relaying to IP's on your network or use authentication. If your not doing that then you deserve to be blacklisted.
Me? I like it when someone nearby starts chatting into there phone. I make sure I participate. They say something. I respond.
Personally Id love to get one of those cguard cellular firewalls on a battery pack. That would be fun.
I have a cell phone but its the only way I can have a phone. I dont take it out of my RV and dont use when im driving. The phones are not the problem. The natural idiots are. The problem is there are too many natural idiots which is evidenced by the number of AOL subscribers there are. Not really there fault. They own TV's. TV's are what create idiots.
Bottom line is they will try. Dont get me wrong, I Bought my fair share of software. Ive spent thousands personally. For the pure number of apps Ive bought that havent worked that I couldnt return I went back to pirate first.
Take Warcraft 3. I downloaded it. Decided it was worthwhile and it worked. Then I bought it. I got sick of getting screwed. Of course the software industry was taught that copy protection does nothing except give the young hackers something to play with.
Remember everything they tried? Code wheels? Turn to page 34 and find the 67th word? They tried everything. They learned that it didnt do any good. The record companies will learn.
You cant make it so I cant copy a CD to mp3. Worse case scenerio I can just run it out the line out and back in the line in. Someone will hack whatever they come up with.
Will i buy the occasional cd? probably. Ok, software has more merit but I'll still download first to make sure the expense is worth it. If its 1 song thats good Im not buying your album. Give me a way to spend a buck to download it and ill pay that, but I will happily pirate before paying 17-22 bucks a cd for 1 song.
No one seems to say it. Ill say it. I just dont care.
Am I hurt the recording companies? Am I hurting the Artists? I dont care.
This is America. America lives by one rule. Screw unto others before they screw you.
We'll. They are trying to screw everyone. Its nice that like you anti piracy nutcases like anal sex without lube. But me, Ill buy an album when Ive decided there are enough worthwhile songs to justify the cost.
Till then, I really dont care who im hurting. Its the american way.
Why is NASA spending money on this. To date neither Boeing 737 or 747 go into space. People wonder how the ISS goes over budget.
Maybe they should use the CIA method. Use the space shuttle to smuggle coke from the moon cartels.
Heres a better thought. Train your frickin personal. If someone cant tell theres an 802.11b card in a notebook then there just stupid. I really dont want someone who cant identify one flying a plane. Hell, i dont want them serveing me my drinks.
I went to see XXX yesterday. I understand previews and enjoy them, even though it was the second time id seen the same ones.
8.25 for a matinee, 18 bucks for drinks, candy, and popcorn for my daughter and I then sit through endless slides and to top it all off 4 commercials before the previews.
Ok, Yeah I downloaded XXX as well. And Ive watched it twice. Ive seen it in the theater twice as well.
My first response to this article was to pop over to bearshare and search for two towers. Ill still see it in the theater but since it was made a while ago, it should jhave already been released. No need to sit on this film. its there fault for sitting on it. Everything gets leaked if you give it enough time.
Hope I find it. Will be enjoyable to see before it comes out. With the advertising im forced to watch in the theator I dont feel bad about downloading movies likes signs and watching them and not paying in the theater. Now the movie studioes have to actually count on movies being worth seeing for cinematics for people to pay for them.
What the Intetnet sector learned was that you cant have lots of money for nothing, Hollywood will have to learn that too.
PS: XXX downloaded version sucked. Hard to make out action and details, Thats why the theater. Ill buy the dvd when it comes out. Signs sucks, but it just sucked.
You could be a spammer. Course we'd all want to kill you but its well suited to telecommuting and even goes well with moving around a bunch so that no one can firebomb your house.

Yes I do and proudly. Walmart supports the RV community. My family and I are active RV'ers spending several months a year on the road. Its nice to know if 11pm and there are no campgrounds in sight I can pull into a wallmart parking lot and spend the night with no hassles. In return Ill pick up some grocerys or something else I need in the store so yeah I shop there.

Should be obvious to most that television dwindles intellect. My solution is to just not buy one. Dont really need it.
Got the net for news and I can watch dvds on my computer.
