  1. Common Carrier rules.... on Facebook Messaging Blocks Links · · Score: 2, Insightful

So I worked many years ago for a USENet provider. We of course carried all groups. Everyone knew what was in USENet ad suffice to say discussion about what to do about things like the kiddie porn came up. The decision was made to shut down those groups. I mean it make's sense. Cut off access to those groups and stem the flow somewhat. Within 2 days of shutting the groups down we received a call from the FBI threatening to shut us down. They said by censoring anything we become responsible for ALL content on our systems.

It seems to me that Facebook should be held to the same rules. If they censor one thing they must censor it all

Now on a positive note the USENet providers legal department found out that what really happened was that we shut down and FBI sting. Once we knew that we were able to facilitate their investigation but still. The common carrier laws should apply to everyone or no one. If I have a vote, it's everyone.

Yes, and our records have secret messages to Satan when you play them backwards too.

Look, I learned to swear way most kids did here, Public school. I don' think its more swearing. I think it is that kids are no longer afraid to do it in front of people that aren't there age.

Swearing can be blamed on two things I think, 1: Peers 2: Parents. If I feel something is inappropriate for my children I cut them off at my end.

On the other hand., This kind of drama over a word is really pointless anyway.

So for years I thought I hated the mac. There's really nothing wrong with the mac technically. PC's have the 3d game market of course but as a work machine its usable. I've had an Iphone for years now but always jail broken. So I figured out its not the Mac I hate. It Apple and Jobs. The company was a much better company when Woz was still there. They have always been naziesk on there no clone prices and go out of there way to force you to buy there hardware when they can. Again that's all apple. Now I do have an issue with Apple users who can not answer the simple question of "Why do you feel the mac is superior?". If they can't answer it I treat them like marketing people. But the company would do much better I think on a whole if they go rid of Jobs. His moronic ideas of company doctrine will eventually kill the company. Anyone for a vote of no confidence?

The newspaper will die. A paper form of the news is needed too... Kill less trees and make those paper company towns not smell like a horses arse, as well as cut down on pollution. Stop bailing them out. Sink or swim should be the rule. Honestly why would I pay for the newspaper when I can pop onto any news site I want and get the same articles for free(not that I do).

  13. I guess.... on The Hurt Locker Producers Sue First 5,000 File-Sharers · · Score: 1

So I guess I'm glad I didn't download this one. Really this is getting moronic. Want to know how the movie companies can stop losing money. First, all the money they are spending on investigators and lawyers. Stop doing it. Second. Pay actors what they deserve not millions. Ok, the best actors maybe 250K just like the best in other professions. But come on. Take terminator 3. They payed ol arnie 32 million dollars for that film. The man is a brutish lug who couldn't act his way out of a shoebox. Still he did draw the crowds, to me 250k for him at that point seems reasonable. Finally. The 48 million they have spent this year alone already on lobbying. Stop that. Suddenly those companies would find they are back in the green.

People are going to pirate, and they will never catch the smart ones, just those without the knowledge to protect themselves. Piracy has been around for ages, at least since they invented reel to reel tape decks. Its going to happen, You can't stop it. Best to be thankful for those customers who choose to pay for and in the knowledge that average computer user doesn't know where or is afraid of the software used to pirate.

Honestly I'm vision impaired. Going to the theater is pointless for me. I'd rather get the movie from Netflix and watch it at home. They lost the theater money from. But before I was vision impaired I stopped going to the movies when they got to be over 8 bucks a ticket. I can see 5, but for 7 I can get a 1 case membership over at Netflix and see them as fast(or rather as slow) as the postal system can handle things.

You can't stop piracy. All that happens when you make a big deal out of it is that people investigate. Not in an attempt to stop it, but more to learn how its done and most of the time, they become pirates to.

Everyone seems to pirate something. Sorry but as Spock said, "The needs of the many, outway the needs of the few or the one." Perhaps they need to reevaluate the rara antipiracy crap. Maybe if they payed actors reasonable salaries instead of millions and they stopped spending 48 million on lobbying (opensecrets.org), plus stopped paying the 1000's of lawyers they pay now to crack down on it. They'd find they were doing quite well despite piracy. I play games, and If I like a game I will buy it. But if it amuses me for 3 or 4 I have 0 interest in paying for it.

Going into stage one while a significant step in the right direction means very little as so many factors can weed it out as a viable drug along the way. Thats why the drug companys charge so much. For every 10000 they try they find one that works. When it gets to phase 3 then its something to be truely watched.

Paying a bounty to find them is all well and good but the courts dont do much about them even when you get them into court. These people are scum who hide thier identity constantly. Admitedly I pay more then most, I have a routed network over my dsl link and I expect to pay more for that. However in my neighboorhood most people are using dialup because of the costs of other services. Were not a poor neighboorhood, average house cost about 500K but people dont seem to want to shoulder the cost of broadband on top of an inflated mortage. Cable modems were available in the area and were only about 30 a month. Course they are asyncronous meaning out via phone and in via cable and you could order them without the cable service. They so oversold thier pipe however that they no longer issue them. One or two houses have directway dishes on them but for the most part my nieghboors are happy with thier modems and cant justify the costs of DSL to the area.

I pay for my broadband because I use it alot and I know what its like to go back to modems. Most of these folks havent been exposed or just dont need it. The problem is people dont really know if they need broadband or not and throwing out a few hundred for a dsl router and getting stuck with a year service contract with an inflated rate is not a great motivator for people to try it to find out.
