If this movie comes out before Ender's Game, Halo, or The Hobbit then I will be pissed. The first movie was alright, the TV series was ok, but another remake? To me that's kind of like remaking Conan with an aging Arnold... or making a new Rocky film th- wait...
A very informative site I found as a result of this story was PODdyMouth's blog. If you are looking for good comparisons between all the PODs out there, check it out.
Even after BUYgate (what I'm calling this), CreateSpace (basically the same thing as BookSurge except with different pricing schemes) sounds like a great start for POD. I honestly don't know why this is a big deal. Amazon does not have to compete with itself.
You just changed my opinion on this topic. Make them run backwards and naked through a cornfield in the morning... that or raiding the banks and passing these laws. Either way.
This is a troll because it's true? The winner took home the lappy they cracked. I'm guessing it went in order of resale and/or pure value. Sometimes "Desirability" and "value" are the same. If it's a troll from the "I'd rather not", fine, but I still don't think that negates the overall value of the comment.
*laughs* Blizzard misses you! Come back. Blizzard is sorry they're successful without you. You stopped buying in the 90's? However did they make it this far?
This is gonna get bashed down and modded to hell, but whatever, it's just a nerd slap fight on the internet anyway.
No, they stood up for the right to reverse engineer, for your right to enjoy your games how you choose, for the right to get on with their tinkering without interference from corporate bullies. Maybe if you want to play the game however you want to play it, make your own fucking game. There is no right to reverse engineer. You have the right to buy a game or not based on your acceptance of the terms set forth by the creator. Don't like the terms? Don't buy the game. But don't fucking buy the game then bitch and moan about the terms you agreed to. Grow up.
A bunch of bad laws and incompetent judges later and they've lost the case though in defiance of all reason and common sense. Laws are made by elected officials, judges are public servants, and if common sense lived up to its name we wouldn't need laws. Law is protection and punishment. Don't like the laws? Three options: change them, defy them or move. Complaining when decisions don't go your way doesn't really help anybody, now does it, Bucko?
What were the BNetD team supposed to do? Roll over and throw away hundreds of man-hours of painstaking work when the bullies came along to try and sweep the flaws in their copy-protection scheme under the carpet? How many hours did Blizzard work to create a game that many people enjoyed, a system that allowed people to play that game over networks and the internet against other people who liked it? Flaws in copy-protection? *sigh* If Blizzard had made BNet cost something then you might have another supporter, but BNet is free, Blizzard owns the rights to the games, flaws and all. Make something, have it stolen and see other people making money piggybacking on your creation, then come back and talk to me.
When someone comes along to hurt you out of spite, you don't just cower and crawl away so they'll leave you alone, you stand up to them and you won't be stupid for doing it. Isn't that what Blizzard did? Protected their creation?
The dumbass who made this bot made money off it. You can't make money on the back of someone else and not expect to get in trouble or for that person to retaliate. If he had distributed the bot for free Blizzard would have a hard time going after him. It's so fucking Bizarro World that you guys are up in arms about certain lawsuits but not others.
Blizzard isn't some monopolistic juggernaut. They have consistently made products that millions of people have liked and paid for. They single-handed redefined a genre that was filled to the brim with crap. If there's a problem with that, and a problem with protecting that, then your "hacker culture mentality" has gone to your head. Go download a movie and claim Fair Use so you can feel better about being a rebel.
So this means that when I reformat my computer every couple months, ON TOP OF downloading over 100 gigs of fucking updates from Microsoft, I'll also have to re-download and install over 100 gigs of FUCKING PROGRAMS!?!?! I hate my life. If I could get Team Fortress to actually work on Ubuntu, I'd say FU to Windows.
This is just one step closer to harnessing the incredible power generated by the hands (or finger, I guess... if that's your thing) of over-stimulated teenagers. I, for one, welcome our sticky overlords... I just won't shake their hands.
Yeah, I hate it when someone asks a question, gets an answer and an insult at the same time, then questions the answer with valid points, then gets somehow penalized. I'm confused... who was the dick again?
Well, the nice thing about Vista is that there aren't any drivers to fail to get... they just aren't there. Honestly, Vista isn't as bad to install. The hardest part I had was video card drivers and a few internal components. The length of time wasn't too bad either. It's longer than XP but nothing you can't handle.
I can't tell you how long it's been since I've had a virus. Just don't open those idiot emails, don't follows links in them, don't follow links in IMs, use FireFox, etc... viruses and spyware go down to nearly nil if you just stop using IE and be smart about your email.
God damnit! It's not the statistics, it's the scripts running on calculators that people are getting the statistics from. Either that or noob calculator admins. Check your paper tape people! How many times do I have to say that? I keep my calculator in a safe (of course changing the combination to said safe 3 times a week), buried in a forrest.
Before we get too many more posts with the basic idea of "I'm going to enact change by not voting/voting for Ron Paul", involving the words "big" and "brother", or just having some kind of sentiment about our rights being tampled on, let me give you this little gem.
The Constitution that most of you tout so highly gives you very specific ways to enact change on a government that has become too powerful. Until you are willing to do what it says with that regard, please don't waste the bandwidth.
One of the best things to do in Ultima Online was the buy a book and make the title something sexual, then attempt to give it to an NPC vendor. The vendor had about 5 different things that it would say if it didn't want the book, wherein it replaced "a book" with the title of the book. So you could get the NPC to say things like my title, or "You are giving me oral pleasure? I have no knowledge of this," or a half dozen other wonders.
If they pull your name out of being logged in to Slashdot, AIM, your computer's name or whatever else, I will literally pay them to make these ads because it will be hours of fun for me and other like-minded people online. Can you even imagine?
Mastercard ad: Bag of chips, $1.29 Hot dog, $2 Ticket to the big game, $50 Giving [a child mollestor] a day of fun, priceless
Slashdot title: Slashdot: News for [your tinfoil hat], stuff that matters
Yeah, the only part of that that really should have been considered trolling was the "bending over and taking" it portion, but I think that should be classified more as "insightful" seeing as how it could be used as a script for one of the parent's projects =)
(like, if I'm dictating all the time instead of using a keyboard, how do I write personal emails without broadcasting what I'm saying to everybody within earshot?, etc). Ok, everyone is saying this like it doesn't already happen? Ever walked down the street and seen someone on their phone? Or how about using your lappy at a wireless hub in some coffee shop? Think that's secure and nobody is reading, listening in, reading over your shoulder, etc...? Or even seen someone singing in the car or on the subway with their iPod? You've got to come up with a better argument. The noisy room is close, but the mics that are expensive now won't be in the future, and they will all have noise canceling features on top of simply recognizing only your voice.
I was in a class with 20 other people learning to use speech recognition software for use in closed captioning and/or transcription. A Sennheiser mic and some nice noise canceling headphones do the trick quite nicely.
I know what you're saying, but my ultimate point was (when you cut away the fat and soapboxy feel of my post) that you can't knock a technology because it's different or because it's not what you're used to. People are talking about making macros to open Notepad and how that's easier than just saying "open notepad". That's more of a work-around than ease of use.
LOL you're arguing that it's easier to do the three or four commands involved in one command than just saying "open notepad" in Vista, then also commenting on Windows 2000. I'm not a huge Microsoft fan or a fan of Vista, but try the Vista speech recognition. It's actually kind of fun to play with.
And saying "Enchance 214 to" whatever else Bladerunner you referenced, that would work on Vista. As far as I know, "enhance" isn't a command, but you can draw lines in paint using only your voice and coordinates.
Point is that the article was talking about "paradigms" and part of getting past those paradigms are getting people like you three to stop saying "it's easier to" simply because it's what you're used to. Easier and used to are not the same, which is what the parent of my original comment was trying to say in making movements smaller instead of a different interface completely. Fact is that the interface does need to change, because the real paradigm is not everyone is used to the same thing or has the same experience.
Just because you used voice recognition 5 years ago and had a bad experience means that it hasn't been updated since then or that you were possibly doing it wrong? I'll bet people who think this opened Wordpad, Dragon, and tried to jump in without going through the training. That's kind of like saying a programming language is bad because you can't just write "put 'Hello World' on the screen".
The real paradigm is teaching the stuck up and closed-minded that maybe touching the screen, using your voice, or attaching LEDs to your fingers is easier than the way they are used to, and putting the technology down is only slowing those people down themselves because they aren't going to "get used to" the newest tech. They'll just sit there in their rocking chairs talking about the way things used to be. "Back in my day we didn't have Google. We had GOPHER and we were happy."
...in rabbits? Do they just wander around wishing everyone a Merry Christmas?
If this movie comes out before Ender's Game, Halo, or The Hobbit then I will be pissed. The first movie was alright, the TV series was ok, but another remake? To me that's kind of like remaking Conan with an aging Arnold... or making a new Rocky film th- wait...

So... if they win the lawsuit it's going to be like Brewster's Millions and they only have 30 days to spend it?
*laughs* Blizzard misses you! Come back. Blizzard is sorry they're successful without you. You stopped buying in the 90's? However did they make it this far?

That really is brilliant. Thank you for bringing something original to the conversation.

Here's your shiny hat back. You asked me to hold it while you typed. It's really nice... is it tin foil?

So THAT'S how they figure out who you are without facial recognition. Good thinking. Thundercock hoooo!
for years and he never complains. I liked the Wikileaks idea though.

So, in essence, you'd rather do something that actually doesn't make a difference? Thank you for proving my point.
