"You speak of not providing people with what they've paid for. How about all those next gen services we want rolled out, how will they ensure they can manage network traffic fairly when all users need a much bigger chunk of bandwidth for standard services?"
Well, they could start by improving their infrastructure, because we know that the internet is here to stay, and so are HD movie downloads etc. The problem with these ISPs is that they never imagined that people would be transferring several GB of data a day, and that there would be a lot of these people. Ideally, the ISP should be able to handle all of their customers online at the same time, using max bandwidth. Of course not everybody is online all the time using all their bandwidth. So they figured that X% of people will be on during peak times, using Y mb/s bandwidth. Now, we want to use more bandwidth (which we already pay for, the most important point.)
The worst part is, that companies like Bell are rolling out their own next gen services, to fill their coffers even more. So if I want to download a movie (legally of course:P), it will be throttled unless I get it from my ISP. Does that sound fair to you?
You seem like a smart guy, so you know all of this already, and a discussion on/. will change nobodies mind.
Yeah, but the action that the ISPs take to correct the negative effects caused by millions of people actually using their allotted bandwidth is unfair (and possibly illegal, IANAL and I have no issues w/throttling so haven't been following closely.)
There is a huge difference between a corporation not giving customers what they have paid for, and the customers using that bandwidth how they see fit.
Just my 0,02
We're getting to the point where SSDs reach practical sizes. I disagree, because as storage capacity rises, so does the amount of data stored. When I upgraded from a 20 gb hard drive to a 500 gb one, I started leaving downloaded movies/music on the hard drive instead of always transferring to DVD-Rs, hooked up a security camera that records the video to my hard drive, and I can finally download HD movies and have them fit on my HD:). Plus, there is so much porn unwatched....
There are enormous differences between cultures in India, with several official languages that vary by region, 2 dominant religions, hundreds of castes etc. Also, as an Indian, we mean yes when we nod our heads.
If you don't know what I mean by
1.6 intel Atom dual core processor then you should really think before you post. Or you were trying (and failing) to be funny.
It is a 1.6 Gigahertz processor, which is the microprocessors clock speed.
So the net result is that in the UK and Sweden you have lots of people who are essentially disconnected from society You mean they are disconnected from a society that looks down on them as inferior because of where they were born and the adversity that they had to overcome to make it to a land of opportunity like the USA. The UK is worse, I am east Indian, and my uncle lived "illegally" in the UK for 8 years. He worked under the table because he couldn't legally work, saved up as much money as he could, and sent money back to his village in India to help pay for a new school, a tractor for his brothers farm, and a paved road to connect us to Jalandhar, the closest major city. This one man had such a huge impact on the lives of thousands in a small village in India.
Think of the bigger picture, it's more about improving the lives of the many than a knee jerk reaction to this huge issue with asylum seekers in the UK, created by the media and elitist white people.
The only reason that I don't mod my xbox 360 and pirate games is that I want to play online, and in the past M$ has banned consoles that are flashed/modded etc. As long as there are broke ass comp sci students who want to play video games, there will be video game piracy.
DDR is a plot to get nerds to work out by making them think they're scoring points instead of burning calories.
Funny, but sort of true. Would I step on a mat with some arrows on it if I couldn't show up my friends? Probably not. But now I can go to the local arcade, show my 1337 DDR skillz by playing Terra on expert (challenge soon.....argh) and have a crowd of cute asian girls watching this random guy from India show up the koreans at DDR. Little do they know that I used to play for like 2 hours a day...for 4 months. It's not that much, but it sure adds up.
In short, not only does DDR stimulate creativity, it can also stimulate social interaction, when owning noobs at arcades. And they never suspect the brown guy...
Then Limewire whos user base is slowly growing, although still relatively small. Having Limewire installed on
about 18% of computers isn't relatively small... it is the most common P2P software installed on computers, but that will probably change to bittorrent in the future.
hasn't gotten much beyond the "writing a list" stage. Yeah, he's definitely on weed. I can see the list now:
1. Blaze up some killer hindu kush to stimulate creativity.
2. Come up with witty name for pointless new distro.
3. Find and eat cheetos.
4. Chill
5. ???
6. Smoke a celebratory joint for awesome idea/list
7. Profit! (Or in this case....support the community and enjoy the fame/vag that comes with developing a new distro)
assuming that the Shivaji referenced in the article is the same one on Wikipedia, he seems like a nice guy.
Here is an excerpt from the wikipedia section on his religious views. Remember he is (portentially) a Hindu saint, but seems to be more of a Hindu king.
Chhatrapati Shivaji was a devout Hindu and he respected all religions within the region. Shivaji had great respect for Warkari saints like Tukaram and Sufi Muslim pir Shaikh Yacub Baba Avaliya of Konkan.[5].
He also visited Mouni Maharaj temple and Samadhi at Patgaon (Bhudargad Taluka near to Gargoti) in Kolhapur district. Shahaji had donated a huge piece of land to Shaha-Sharif Durga of Ahmednagar.
Shivaji allowed his subjects freedom of religion and opposed forced conversion. The first thing Shivaji did after a conquest was to promulgate protection of mosques and Muslim tombs. One-third of his army was Muslim, as were many of his commanders: his most trusted general in all his campaigns was Haider Ali Kohari; Darya Sarang was chief of armoury; Ibrahim Khan and Daulat Khan were prominent in the navy; and Siddi Ibrahim was chief of artillery.
Shivaji had respect for the Sufi tradition of Islam.[6] Shivaji used to pray at the mausoleum of the great Sufi Muslim saint Baba Sharifuddin. He also visited the abode of another great Sufi saint, Shaikh Yacub of the Konkan, and sought his blessings. He called Hazrat Baba of Ratnagiri bahut thorwale bhau, meaning "great elder brother".
Kafi Khan, the Mughal historian and Bernier, a French traveler, spoke highly of his religious policy. He also brought back converts like Netaji Palkar & Bajaji in to Hinduism. He prohibited slavery in his kingdom.
Shivaji applied a humane and liberal policy to the women of his state.[6] There are many instances in folklore, which describes Shivaji's respect for women, irrespective of their religion, nationality, or creed.
Shivaji's sentiments of inclusivity and tolerance of other religions can be seen in an admonishing letter to Aurangzeb, in which he wrote:
"Verily, Islam and Hinduism are terms of contrast. They are used by the true Divine Painter for blending the colours and filling in the outlines. If it is a mosque, the call to prayer is chanted in remembrance of him. If it is a temple, the bells are rung in yearning for him alone."[6][7][8] The point of this long post is that I can't see why anybody would do this? Unless they were trying to increase tensions between hindus and muslims, because I am *assuming* that he is muslim. And as a Sikh from India, I think that the religious issues between Sikhs and Hindus/Muslims aren't as serious as they used to be.....This is just weird.
If a Muslim wanted to piss off Hindus, it would make sense to have a controversial picture or w/e of a major hindu god or godess.
with people tracking software it will not be 100% accurate in the near future, because to get accurate numbers you need to be able to differentiate between people. I think that this is a great idea for the people who want this data, bad idea for paranoid people who want their privacy. Your tin foil hats won't save you now....but a cell phone signal jammer will.
Isn't twenty percent of the population in jail? Not even close, it's more like 1%
And even that is for Adults in the US. There are some serious misconceptions about the US prison system, being a Canadian, all I know is that you are more likely to go to jail in the US than Canada for any crimes I might commit.
It's very scary that 1 out of 9 young, black men are in jail. That's a terrifying figure.
Survivor Buddy, A Friendly Robot Rescuer I would prefer if the robot designers dedicated more research to more necessary functions, like checking a pulse/breathing, providing food/water etc. This seems way too gimmicky, and if you're trapped at the bottom of a mine, a singing, friendly robot won't be as useful as say, a robot that fires lasers. Wait, that wouldn't help much either. Maybe if the miners were bored and wanted some entertainment. Nothing is more fun than playing with lasers, until somebody goes blind. Then it's a lawsuit.
Unless they force us to take a class on "Why Copyright infringement is bad," how do they expect us to know this BS? Morals? Ethics? Fox News?
Seriously though, it can't be too hard of a test, its annoying, unfair, and almost certainly useless in convincing broke ass students (such as myself), that we should pay $16 for a CD with 2 good songs, or download DRM laden audio files that I can't use on multiple devices.
True, I have never heard of somebody's ipod being connected to a computer, and searched. A flash drive, sure, but an ipod, digital camera, cell phone memory card....the possibilities are endless. Thanks OP for the great idea.
One of the issues that I have with my dad building the houses etc is that there will still be people who are basically servants, who are of a lower caste. We are traditionally farmers, Jatts, and are normally pretty average on the caste hierarchy, but because so many Jatts moved to Canada/England and the US, they have become more affluent and returned with their newfound riches to try and better the lives of the people who can't leave. I would like to say that there is no classism, but classist undertones are felt throughout the community. The kids of all castes go to school together, there are affirmative action-like programs to try and get people of lower castes to get government jobs (where they will probably become corrupt/rich, the dream of way too many Indians.)
My close family is comparatively liberal and accepting, but far from perfect. My uncle married a white woman, I have some cousins who are half Filipino etc, but inter caste marriages are hard to come by, personally, I would try and avoid "shaming" my family, because I know that my extended family would be pissed, and being alienated is basically a guarantee.
Anonymous Coward? Not for long...

RTFA, it's a 1.6 intel Atom dual core processor. For Shiva's sake it is in the summary, nvm TFA.
What? No SSD? ultra portable laptops are one of the few uses that a 16gb or so SSD is viable.
