I am happy this guy is in this position. The goal is to take Linux to mainstream, not the mainstream to Linux. This guy comes from a mainstream background (Windows/Mac). What better person could you ask than one who knows and appreciates the polish, finesse and fit of a Mac firsthand, to take Linux to the masses? What we certainly do not need is a blind Linux zealot in that position.

This is a common weaving artefact in cheap cameras that use CMOS sensors instead of the higher quality CCD sensors. CMOS sensors do not have the so called "global shutter" mechanism - so the exposure and the serial scan out of pixels both take place simultaneously, which creates this effect. In contrast, CCD sensors have a global shutter, which allows the exposure to complete before serially scanning out the pixels, thus protecting the image from a "rolling" exposure.

I had problems viewing documents with complex formatting and embedded Chinese fonts on Foxit. Returned to Adobe. It is easy to miss some information in the document without even realizing it, if the reader sacrifices functionality in favor of being lightweight. I would any day prefer fidelity to the PDF spec over being lightweight.

Sarcasm is a very cultural thing. I observe people from US are infinitely more adept at communicating through sarcasm and humour compared to other countries or more eastern regions of the world. These other people in general adopt a more serious communicative posture. This becomes painfully obvious in cross-cultural meetings where subtle humour from a westerner draws straight faces from Japanese, Chinese or Indian audiences. The subtle sarcasm in this post was lost on me too until I read the parent comment.

  15. Re:Only Point and Shoots? on Hacking Canon Point-and-Shoot Cameras · · Score: 1

All modern digital cameras, even point and shoots do have a mechanical shutter. The reason is a bit involved - readout of the captured image is not performed at one go, but rather by fields - upto 5 or 6 fields comprise each image (remember the odd/even fields of television system?). Without a mechanical shutter to shut off the light, when one field is being read out the other fields continue to be exposed to light - result is uneven exposure of image lines and smear. Mechanical shutter is the only way to prevent this. During live-view the situation is slightly different - the CCD is configured to read only one field (resolution and dynamic range is compromised for frame-rate) hence the need for mechanical shutter does not arise.
