There are also those of us who don't mind them at all when done properly, and actually prefer them when they serve some purpose. See Anarchy Online's billboards.
Whoa, horrible idea... this is just the type of thing that'll get you yelled at when they move on to a real distribution that has the default rm operation and they lose their files. Or when they begin trying their hand at scripting and hardcode/bin/rm, without knowing of -i. Or...
Ex-fucking-actly. Finally, someone that gets it takes the time to explain why Linus is mad. This has nothing to do with Tridgell's (great) work on Samba - this just ended up producing a mostly useless tool that led to a lot of people getting screwed.

Contrary to the others, I say DO give it a try. I've never played an MMORPG before, but the game is damn fun. Of course, being an MMO game, it's only fun if you find the right people to play with. Since there are so many people logged in all of the time, that isn't normally a problem. You can usually find a nice group of folks to play with.
I also tried it only because it went free. A couple of friends gave me some tips as I started playing, and the game's been great to me. Occasional bugs, sure, but nothing too serious.
I was at a mini "tech expo" on campus the other day and talked to some people from Cell for Cash. You go to their site, sign up, and they send you out a prepaid box that you ship the phone back in.
They say that the more recent phones are reconditioned and resold overseas. If a phone's too old to be of use, their partner (or someone?) recycles it and extracts precious metals, whatever those may be. The guy said it probably wouldn't be much money for my old, bulky Panasonic (if I can find it), but it's better than having it end up in a landfill I suppose.
Er, better? How exactly is this better at all? Name one reason...
Try actually using the dialogs. I've seen them a few times. Most recently it was Ethereal on Win... go ahead and try it, it's a huge pain in the ass.
Until then, keep your comments to yourself plz, kthx.
Hooray for dumbing down?

Great.. now we get to use that awesome new save dialog! I couldn't stand being able to choose the dir to save in easily... Reduced usability is fun!
And the amazing new open dialog... After all, being able to type in the name of the file or dir you'd like to see is lame. Text input boxes are soooooo 1990s!
Now if only they'd replace these text inputs on/. so that I can type everything out with my mouse... The ultimate in usability.
What you're referring to isn't the fault of the Rage Fury MAXX, it's just plain old ATI. They can't write drivers. I also had similar trouble, but then, I've had it with half the ATI cards I've installed in the last 10 years.
I've been a C&C fan ever since I played the demo of the first one (TIberian Dawn?). With C&C Generals/Zero Hour, however, the campaigns didn't hold my interest long. Instead, some friends and I tried out the multiplayer.
BEST. MULTIPLAYER. EVER.
The implementation of "generals" for each side that have, for example, better air force and no tanks, or very strong infantry but few vehicles, makes for a much more fun experience than just 3 sides, with the same types of units/functions on each. Whether we played against the computer on teams, or against each other, we were sure to have hours of fun.
But then the bugs started showing up. For some strange reason, we would always get the "network mismatch" (or whatever) error popping up when we were half way through the game, and would be forced to quit. EA never even attempted to fix it. The most they did was to release a patch that, among other things, changed the text of the error message, without fixing the problem itself. The problem wasn't any of us.. we checked our bandwidth usage, we tried other games, etc... everything pointed to shitty coding by good ol' EA and their 80 hour work weeks.
We tried over and over to get the game to work (it was that fun), but it would always error out and piss us off. Fucking shame.
Arch has been amazing. I've run many different distros, but none have compared to Arch. First off, the speed is incredible. I thought my Gentoo system flew, but Arch felt a lot faster (don't forget: Arch is a binary dist.).
Haha, that says it all. You Gentoo guys are a riot.
Your experiences with swaret aren't far from the norm. It works "well" for people usually, but then eventually it bombs and takes the system with it. Even when it's working "well", though, it ends up making some changes that introduce buggy behavior in cerain apps (I think there was one with mozilla recently).
Not so as far as MP3 support goes. See the faq where they acknowledge that they're leave out all such formats, including MP3s. A friend confirmed this when he tried Ubuntu a few days ago.
Hi. I'm the guy that runs the BitTorrent tracker that's been used for the past few Slackware releases ( http://transamrit.net:8082/ ). So, I suppose this should give me a teensy bit of credibility.
Having said that:
1. Pat's said that he wasn't eager about adding GNOME in the beginning. He's still regretting it.
2. Rumors about KDE? Well, they're just rumors. These aren't rumors about KDE, they're straight from The Man himself. Both of those emails mentioned in the DLG thread linked above are real. I've even clarified what I could in my post (as TransAMrit).
3. Yes, the person that posted the first email appears to be unknown to the forum, as am I. So, you can say that I may be bullshitting as well, but... well, you've gotta believe someone, don't you?:)
And you're right, this is not a final decision. However, it is NOT a rumor. It is a decision that Pat has said he needs to make.
"and as the followups in that thread note, it could be interpreted as an endorsement of the good job done by Dropline in packaging GNOME for Slack."
Key word there is "could". After the fiasco with swaret, it's unlikely for many 3rd party packages to get Pat's blessing. And as I noted on the DLG forum (I'm TransAMrit), I didn't see any real endorsement from the emails.
For those of you that don't know about swaret, it was given a trial by being placed in Slackware's extra/ dir a while back. It failed miserably, doing lots of things wrong, breaking systems left and right, so of course, it was taken out of the official tree. But still, lots of people swear by swaret. That is, until they get bit by it. Then the blame is associated not with a half-assed 3rd party utility, but Slackware itself.
I'm not saying anything about the quality of DLG here, but it's easy to see that you don't want the above situation repeated many times.
typical fucking/. <nemith> bunch of kiddies who sit behind thier modems, no nothing of a enterprise network <nemith> they have stories about "wireless 802.11 voip phones" and of course they blow the article out of porportion and relate it to using a phone with public hotspots... <nemith> shit dude... it's for corporations with a voip and wireless network! <nemith> and now this... 10 gig ethernet... sure it sounds riduclous to some fucking kiddie behind cable modem <amrit> haha <nemith> but you take a high bandwidth applicaiton place a bunch of servers/desktops with gig connection to thier switches <nemith> how do you think the switches talk to each other <nemith> you add up the bandwidth of many users... you may eventually need 10 gig <nemith> </rant> <amrit> you set those bitch ass niggas straight? <nemith> not worth it <amrit> heh <amrit> how about i just paste this log there? <nemith> sure <nemith> i don't care <nemith> fucking/.

Yes, but then you're still stuck with Debian, (K)Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse, or Mandriva..
After all, it's not like anyone could consider any apple hardware ugly.. no, of course not... All bow to the translucent plastic!

Dude, where have you been? There's no need for SATA2, Plextor's had these out forever now.
I saw this on irc and thought "whoa, 3 dollars and 48 cents?" That price would have been understandable for this garbage, though...
He got caught buying weed. Oops?

It was around 2.5 years ago.
Ditto. WTF is wrong with the editors, getting our hopes up like that...
Great, I'll check it out (even though LOTR is out now, heh).
Thanks.

typical fucking /. ... sure it sounds riduclous to some fucking kiddie behind cable modem /.
<nemith> bunch of kiddies who sit behind thier modems, no nothing of a enterprise network
<nemith> they have stories about "wireless 802.11 voip phones" and of course they blow the article out of porportion and relate it to using a phone with public hotspots...
<nemith> shit dude... it's for corporations with a voip and wireless network!
<nemith> and now this... 10 gig ethernet
<amrit> haha
<nemith> but you take a high bandwidth applicaiton place a bunch of servers/desktops with gig connection to thier switches
<nemith> how do you think the switches talk to each other
<nemith> you add up the bandwidth of many users... you may eventually need 10 gig
<nemith> </rant>
<amrit> you set those bitch ass niggas straight?
<nemith> not worth it
<amrit> heh
<amrit> how about i just paste this log there?
<nemith> sure
<nemith> i don't care
<nemith> fucking
Easy way to avoid those errors is to always reverse the conditional.
Think: if (0 = myVar)
versus: if (myVar = 0)
One will error, the other won't, and readability isn't reduced at all.
