    No, what they're hoping for is that all of the Japanese game developers that really really chafed under Nintendo's iron-fisted rule (if you can dig up a copy of Game Over, read it) and who jumped to Sony when Sony offered them freedom and light, and who now see Sony as becoming the new Nintendo, might want to work with the current 'new company who will bend over backwards to accomidate them,' that being Microsoft.

    Ever played a Dreamcast on VGA? Lord love a duck, there's no comparison.

    Aye. Other consoles have VGA converters; the DreamCast had VGA *output.* Huge difference.

    The PS2 is engineered for televisions, so that's out. The Xbox, having like the DC a computer video card, could easily have VGA out, but Microsoft really doesn't want people to see the Xbox as a black and green computer, and so nixed it.

    Besides, half the fun of the Xbox is the AC-3 output. So leave it in the home theater, says I!

    When you set up your iTunes account, were you misled in any way about what machines you'd be allowed to play the files on? About how many times you could transfer the files? Stuff like that?

    Do you complain about not being able to drive your car on the sidewalk? It's your car, after all, you should be able to drive it however you want it.

    You want iTunes for Linux? Petition for iTunes on Linux.

    They tried. 3dFX bet the farm on their t-buffer hardware, pointing out that 30 frames-per-second, rendered to include motion blur and what not, would provide better (or, more-film-like, which is the same thing to most people) image quality than rendering 100 static frames per second would.

    The Consumer Public, however, voted with their wallets, and opted for raw frame rate, and the rest, as they say, is history.

    Film doesn't display 30 (or 24, or whatever) frames per second; it displays frames of 1/30th of a second, or 1/24th of a second, or whatever.

    BIG difference from rendering, which displays a frame as an instant snapshot in time.

    In other words, if you're filming a man running, each frame will show that man for 1/30th or 1/24th or whatever of a second; you get motion blur and what not.

    Rendering a frame of a man running, however, gives you a still image of a man in a ridiculous pose.

    Well, for starters, what if your interface card fries, and takes the drives with it? What if some program overwrites a bunch of your data?

    A worm is a stand-alone program which propegates itself; it actively attempts to infect other computers.

    A virus is a program that attaches itself to an executable file, a boot sector, or something, and when the file is run, the virus is also run; the virus then attempts to infect other files.

    A trojan is a program which attempts to trick the user into running it, or giving it information.

    So, SQL Slammer, Code Red/nimda are worms; bagle/netsky (started out, at least) as trojans, and there hasn't been an honest-to-goodness virus that I can think of in years.

    Ye need to look back on the times.

    In the fifties and early sixties, science was being thrown forward by leaps and bounds. Some guy in his basement really could, and did, come up with world-shaking inventions.

    Now a days, however, it seems kind of farfetched that a highschool kid could come up, over night, with an adhesive that 3M can't.

    Yes, because it was a dump port; they didn't do anything Xboxy to it.

    Want to see the difference? Play Dead or Alive 2 on the Dreamcast (blows away DoA2 on the PS2) then go play DoA 3 on Xbox. Seeing the T&L on skin, the bump-mapping used on the costumes to create embroidery and what not...damn.

    Step 1: After five years, your name is added to a pool of people who are eligable for retest.

    Step 2: Every year, X percent of that pool are required to be restested. You get one 'grace' rescheduling, but if you miss your test, your license is yanked. Period.

    Step 3: If you fail your test, you get sent to a retraining course, at your expense. If you can't afford it, your license is yanked. Period.

    Step 4: If you, after taking the retraining, fail your test again, you are reduced to a G1 (for non Canadians: you may only drive with a fully licensed and five-years experienced driver in the passenger seat, only during daytime, and not on major highways, 0.0 BAC, and other minor restrictions) for a period of one year.

    Step 5: If you pass your test either time, your name is removed from the pool for five years.

    Step 6: If you have demerits/fines/etc, your name is more likely to be chosen from the pool, if it's in the pool. X amount of demerits or fines/traffic offences automatically send you for a restest as normal.

    Step 7: NO EXCEPTIONS. No hardship waivers, nothing. If driving is that important to you, you shouldn't have driven like an idiot.

    This way, the system isn't too overburdened with retests, idiots get retested more often, and people are encouraged to actually drive properly.

    If Microsoft software wasn't faulty then they wouldn't release patches, would they? Simple as that.

    So, any program or OS that has security updates or patches is faulty?

    As an experiment, why not do exactly as you suggest - move eveyone onto virtually any other operating system and see how many virus infections you get?

    It's been done. The original Internet worms, exploits, and so on, were UNIX; the Morris worm, lpr cracks, debug/wizard sendmail stupidity, and so on. Then, the world moved to DOS, and so did the viruses. Then, onto windows 9x, and again, so did the viruses.
