  2. Cost on Ask Slashdot: Why Not Linux For Security? · · Score: 1

Its cheaper to stay on windows. When you to a Total cost benefit analysis of remaining on the current Windows platform compared to switching to Linux including: software deployment, Hardware deployment (if required), user training, support staff re-training, application migration, etc. Its so much cheaper to patch up the current software that the company has already outlaid $millions compared to changing over. Sure some companies will slowly migrate distributing the cost over a longer period of time, but most wont take the leap.

  3. Adverts in movies on Fox Sues Dish Over "Auto Hop" Ad-Skipping Feature · · Score: 1

Why arent movie producers (artists) suing TV stations for putting adverts in the middle of their "artwork"? Surely that is " violating copyright" as it is not showing the movie as the artist intended.

  4. Scratch on The Price of Military Tech Assistance In Movies · · Score: 3, Insightful

It is two big American industries scratching each others backs. The average American young kid wont realise this until he gets back from his stint in Iraq, minus a limb.

  5. Re:Not only that but... on Who's Pirating Game of Thrones, and Why? · · Score: 0

So true! The TV and movie delivery system is so broken in Australia. Delayed compared to other countries (as mentioned above), pay to watch (using paid TV services, high prices for these pay TV services, then when it does come out on DVD, the DVD is seriously over-priced. Its a broken product delivery system. I cant see it changing soon either with the limited media ownership options we have. I saw a movie ont he weekend "The Dictator". What rubbish. I paid $15 each for me and my GF ($30), popcorn and a coke $10, totalling $40 for utter rubbish that Hollywood can put out. Why would I? I can download it quicken than it takes to get the movies, watch it on my big TV in the comfort of my own home, Microwave popcorn at $2, bottle of coke $2. Thats $4 versus $40!!! Sorry TV and movie industry; you gota get better products and a better delivery system to compete. .

  6. Bad on Assange Stands 'Real Chance' of Election In Australia · · Score: 1

This story just highlights not how good Assange is (as he has done virtually nothing to win) but just how bad the people are who are running against him.

I live in Australia too and ive never heard of "GAME" either?

  8. Begining on Facebook Tests the Waters With Paid Perks · · Score: 1

This looks like the begining of the end for Facebook. Companies that pay for their posts will get the most user reach. Hmmm, sounds like a business model for making money, not social interaction? I closed my account recently due to getting the same old crap posted from the same old people (the ones I interacted with on FB - not the ones I actually care about reading, because I dont interact with them in FB land; I usually only interact with them in real life). After this change is implimented I can see may more following.

  11. Sony on Why CISPA Is a Really Bad Bill · · Score: 2

This comes at the same time Sony announces a $6.4 billion loss. Im sure they will blame music piracy, yet Apple is making those same billions in profit during a GFC. Can anyone see that one business model is overtaking the other? - Sony obviously cant, and have missed the bus too.

  12. Years? on BOSS: The Universe's Most Precise Measurement · · Score: 2

Why do we use years as time measurement for events that happen in the universe? Years are an Earth measurement that have no bearing on anything else in the universe.

  13. Of course it helps on Do Tablets Help Children Learn? · · Score: 1

Absolutley, it helps them to learn. I think the skills they learn are preperation for their future in an IT world. In the past few weeks that ive got my first ipad, my kids have learnt to email, sms, watched videos and with apps learnt other skills (like garage band they have learnt the basics of music composition). There are sub-skills learnt too, like with emails and sms, their reading has picked up too. Sure, this time needs to be monitored, so the ipad and computer remain in the loungeroom where I can keep an eye on what they do and tiem spent on them. It also is a different set of skills to things like outdoor sports.

  14. Lawyers on Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Google Chase 'Got Milk?' Patents · · Score: 1

Considering the human brain can remind us to "get milk" when we get to a specific location (like a shopping centre) I think this patent should extend to human thought too. This would mean that if I remember to buy milk while im at the shops, I will need to pay a royalty to the patent holder. Of course, policing this could be done in the same way as the music industry works. Where If I remember to buy milk at the shops and dont pay the royalty the company holding the patent can send out blanket legal threats to everyone in the shop at the time. It will then be up to the courts to decide if I actually remembered to buy milk prior to going to the shops. Obviously I will be considered guilty and will need to prove my innocence costing me thousands of dollars in lawyers fees.
