  1. Bounty System. on Ursula Le Guin's Petition Against Google Books · · Score: 5, Interesting

Here is how (I think) I would do it. I start to write a book. I will release a few chapters for free online. I could and would even solicit feedback from these chapters. I now start a bounty. I would want X dollars for my work and a little bit to keep me going. Once I have reached X dollars, I will finish my story and release it as an e-book - free for any and all to read, share and do pretty much anything with besides alter or make money off of. If I fail to reach my bounty - it would be because people didn't want my story - why should I get paid for or release/finish something no one wants? They key to this idea is that I get compensated what I believe I should and get compensated(until a movie studio wants to buy the movie rights). And no one gets denied my literary genius :) The public does not even need to know how much my bounty is - maybe I would let them know what percentage has been obtained - and if unreached, I would guarantee refunds.

I agree wholly with you. But on the flip. I do not object to religion or churches, I do disagree with segregation. Ask me to justify beliefs and I will try. I am never going to state that I, Rome or any other church, book, theology has all the answers. When being interviewed I can and will be questioned/nitpicked to the point where I have no answer. Often this is because I was unaware, unsure or had not previously thought about that aspect of theology. Do not see my inability to justify every aspect of faith (which we all know boils down to the belief in the unknown/unprovable/improbable)as a victory for the side of atheists/skeptics as I see no sides - Just people with different belief systems. I am usually worried whenever spirituality of any sort is brought up on slashdot for the reason above. It appears that many of the /. are the bigoted holier-than-thou atheist types. Question the religions and the religious. But please stay tolerant of them and show respect. You are never going to prove yourself better than others by pointing out other peoples misgivings. The only way to show you are a better person is by being a better person and trying to live a better life. This philosophy can work within a religious or secular context.

  7. Insurance on UK Consumers To Pay For Online Piracy · · Score: 1

    I have household contents insurance.

I pay a premium to my insurance company who promise to indemnify me against the PHYSICAL LOSS of my PROPERTY under certain circumstances. Robbery is included.

As everything is insurable for the right price (Policies for alien abduction/ singers bottoms) maybe the recording/movie industry should look to insure themselves against such potential loss.

Or do you think that insurance companies would laugh at them when they come to claim that John Smith downloaded a Metallica record asking them to prove where loss took place?

The financial crisis of the last year and a bit was caused in a big part by much the same thinking that the record companies have now. .

The property market was in a boom. Everyone wanted a house (2 or three) because the value of these things just kept rising. People/banks and companies were highly over-inflating what a house/section or development was going to be worth to the potential buyers.

For a while they were right, but then something happened. The market decided that these things were not worth the over inflated cost. Suddenly People had debt which outweighed the "potential value" of their properties. And although John Smith still had a house. He no longer has the potential value he thought he was going to get for the house. John is now upset. He has his house, but no one is wiling to pay for it what he was hoping they would be willing to pay for it when the market was in boom. The market has changed.

The recording industry need to realise that the Market has changed. Distribution channels have changed. and the Potential Value they put on a copy of their product is not what they once thought it was.

After sneaking out and finding a place to drink upon return (3am) you guessed it, some students are still studying. - It is wholly a cultural thing based around the importance of education. Where I come from (New Zealand) qualifications are not counted as important as what you can do and have done. In many of these asian countries sited, where competition is high for all sorts of spots that Education and Qualifications are essential. Of course, in every culture, a little bit of who you know goes a wee way.
