How many years have I heard this gloom and doom. NAFTA will kill jobs, Blah blah blah will never be viable again. Fact is that the markets go in cycles. The US is viable to employ people and still has rising productivity.
The next generations will realize what we wished to realize in new technology to fix current problems. I see a boom in polution fixes and productivity of humanity fixes.
So bottom line, you are spreading stuff that has been heard since before Adam died. Its nothing new, and its nothing true.
I know a place you can get them cheap.. real cheap!! Yes, you too can own a Microsoft License for that "copy" of Microsoft Windows you have secretly installed on your second computer.
To gain a Cheap Microsoft Windows License, just find ANY company in bankrupcy and offer 10 bucks a license. You too can have the joy of cheap MS products.
Sounds like you have been told a company line so that you are paid less and given less than others. Well run companies keep people happy and employed. I have been working at the same company for going on 9 years now. If I move it wont be because of compensation, but because I want a different challenge.
Do you have 401K? A retirement Plan? Health Services? Getting paid over 60K minimum starting? Have an office? New car? Wife? etc..
A company would not keep its workers for 2 reasons: 1. Compensation is bad, and 2. The work is lame. If you are liking the work, then its number 1. Figure out for yourself how badly you are being used.
Find out about your phone, for our companies policy has the statement that phones are for official use only. They can listen to any conversation on any line at any time.
They dont generally do this. It can be done and is perfectly legal.
From the outside looking in, and being interviewed several times.. and refusing the job. Great Bridge, the ones who were promoting PostGres, seemed to be overmanaged. Too worried with getting management things done and not enough worry about contracts and getting contracts finished and started.
When you have 3 managers in on one interview, it seems to be overmanaged to me.
My guess is you have not dealt with military contracting agencies. The US contracting agencies are very painful to contractors and it is why a large portion of contractors now go overseas to other governments.
Lets talk about some of the processes I have observed.
1. Get a FFP contract with the US Government. This is a Fixed Price contract right? Well.. After the contract is COMPLETED, the government will come on in and audit the contract and then decide if you can really make that much profit.
This means if you bid a contract for 500K and it took you 200K to do it, the government can come back in and take 200K away from the contract. This is scary.. and I have seen it in action.
2. The US Government will portion off contracts. 1 system may now be set in tasks so that the 1st task may be the design, and during the life of the program, they may switch companies mid-life because they constantly rebid.
It means that the thousands, hundreds of thousands, you spent on a proposal and bid process that you win may then be worthless. You may spent 300K to get a 4 million dollar job, but then the job turns into a 200K job because the government does this task... Which begs the question in the end.. Why do business with the US Government anyways?
Answer: If you dont, other countries will not purchase your products.
For some reason, logic and contracting does not go together.
Also, I am just a project engineer, and most of the observations come from a point-of-view of "What the hell are we doing this for". Finacially, companies will take these options because we need to keep people employed. The US Government also knows this.. and uses it to bash contractors over the head. Ever wonder why the MIC goes through such contraction all the time? Its because the smaller companies end up having the talent but not the ability to handle the Governmental pressures. Lockheed, NG, etc end up comming along and using its power to soak up companies and using the talent to force the government to use them. Its a vicious cycle.
Federal Money may subsidise some of the work but let me give you some truths about out Federal Government.
1. They compete with the companies.. using the companies own code. 2. They will own rights to the full product even if the product was only 5% funded by the government.
My company sells software to many countries, including the US under Fixed Price Contracts. These contracts are set by the US contracting agencies so that the US owns rights to the binaries (This was standard for a long time, I am not sure now). The US takes the binaries and then tries to sell them to the same countries we are trying to sell to. Guess our own competition is our own software.
While this seems nice, the Federal government already shows that they would use this tactic to put companies out of business. Sorry, this is unacceptable to me.
Outlawing the GPL use is unacceptable as well for the same reasons. Our company made software, enhanced for a governement, the government should not be able to use its rights to take over the software. This is what the GPL prevents.. the same scenario as above.. just think GPL.
These fears maybe valid, expecially with the amount of quick-fix doctors out there.
I have 20/25 vision now. This is more than adequate for any computer work (yes, I am a full developer). I had such vision that I could not hardly even SEE the monitor. Now, I enjoy a life without glasses/contacts. It is amazing.
A few recommendations: 1. Find a reputable doctor. One who has been doing this a LONG time. Find one who works on sports stars and celebrities in your area (they usually are better).
2. Make sure you do your homework. It is very important to know that you are messing with your EYES here.
3. Follow the doctors care to the LETTER. No flubbing or missing an eye-drop.
Is it for everyone? No, but it cured my nearsightedness and astigmatism. I recommend it everywhere. Of course I paid 2400 per eye at the time.
Wow, nice replies. Glad you noticed the King Arthur/Star Wars link.
I find that stories tend to be recycled over and over. Matrix was a great story, not because of the SF stuff, but because it was the Christ story.
How many stories out there are actually based on a form of story written in the bible/torah/koran, etc. I have seen so many SF stories, etc.. that I wonder where the original stories are.
When I find an original story, I go with it. I think that Southpark is one well-written series of political satire. It is humourous with shock value in the correct places.
I forget the article but southpark was rated as one of the top 5 TV Shows of all time. Why? because it pushed the envelope and was the first to take advantage of real freedom of speech rulings that the Supreme Court granted... me I think its because the writing is great and slaps you in the face about cultural issues.
I still think that there is yet to be a real SciFi story on-screen (TV or otherwise) to challenge the writings of Niven, and others. When a great story (Battlefield Earth) is transfered to the big screen.. it is RARE (if not impossible) that the story gets to the screen. Too many people, too many ideas, too little vision..
Buffy? BUFFY? Comparing B5 to Buffy is like comparing a fully orchestrated Mozart concert to a Ozark mountain band. One is a huge, powerful meaningful setup, the other is pretty bland and relies on flash.
Matrix: Human heat combined with a form of fusion? Oh give me a break. CopOUT. dont get me wrong, I loved the movie.
A great story like STAR WARS (original) or B5 is a story that you can take out of SciFi and place it in any time with a few changes.
I loved some of the Twilight Zone shows, but some sucked.
Let me put it this way. The second to last episode in the 5 years of B5. The one where Sheridan was "taken beyond the rift". The one where his wife would wake everyday and greet the sun just like she did on the last day of his life with her..
I CRIED for gods sake. Do you realize that only at the original ET, and B5 have I cried.. that was incredible writing.
On a Side note: I want to be a TechnoMage.. and I am in my time. A Computer Scientist:)
Well, unless bush dictator proves his case to me, a citizen of the US, I will not support an attack on Iraq.
Our country is supposed to be based on the free flow of ideas (yes), and the representation of the people. If the leaders keep secrets and waste our lives on the secrets, this is not working.
As someone put it, Bush is not making his evidenciary case to the US because... He is afraid we may disagree. Well since he is not, I already disagree. If he does, I may change my mind. Risking ones life for others better have a darn good reason behind it.
Right now, I am wondering if we have our own little dictator in office. Running around talking about attacking Iraq. Presenting information to other countries, but NOT TO US.. the Citizens of the country he wants to take to war.
One of the basic freedom tenets is free flow of information, Bush believes, apparently, in secrecy. Where is a town meeting where he presents his evidence? Until he does that, He is making more mistakes.
A few things about military might. Military is a form of diplomacy that should be used as a last resort. Military is seen as a strength, as well as a weakness.
Everyone has the fundamental rights of US, then the US government has the fundamental rights to protect those rights.. including arresting, executing, those that oppress others.
See, your point has a problem. No one sees that they have the same rights as US citizens, or other freer countries. In fact, they try and take rights from the ones that have MORE than they do.
Do you think 9/11 was in retaliation for Isreal? Britian was the main component of that, yet they were not attacked.
Do you think 9/11 was in retaliation for Troops on Saudi Soil? Why not attack the Government of SA, since they Allow it to happen.
Do you think 9/11 was in retailiation for Iraqi childrens deaths? The US is part of a multi-nation embargo, including many Muslem countries.
Pure and simple, 9/11 was in retaliation for the culture of free ideas, and free flow of information. The fear that those who oppress others have to "TRUTH" or even the exchange of radical ideas is amazing. A radical idea being that women dont have to wear barkas.
Jealousy, Fear, Power.. all of that goes into it.
Besides, your last point. The US invaded 1 country that they should not have (Vietnam), and what other country have they "invaded" without being attacked first?
Grenada? Safety of US Citizens, which proved to be the case. Panama? Removal of a major drug lord? Somalia? Feed the hungry (UN based) Bosnia? Save the Muslems (UN based) Kuwait? Requested, and UN based.
I still dont see a real reason not to attack any of them except vietnam (which was stupid).
The US is not at war with Afghanistan. The US is at war with Al Queda, and those that support them (The Taliban). Afghanies enjoy more freedom and peace in Afghanistan now than they have in a long time.
Lets not forget, the US should have put a lot more pressure on Taliban before... the suffering of the women was almost too much to bear.
The Taliban also destroyed International Treasures in the Bhuddan Statues. Lest we forget, they thumbed thier noses at everyone.. included other muslim countries time and again.
They are poor, but now they have more money being pumped into the country than they have had since Russia occupied it. They have thier own government back as well.
As for the Nicauagran Rebels and such, Hey, The US aint perfect. Heck, we did deal with Iran on that "Iran Contra" affair, where we sold weapons to Iran for money that we gave to the Contras.. bad policy? Yep.
Then again, I would say helping out in mogidishu (spelling) and kuwait and other countries was bad too.. ??
A huge unemployment rise in the Tech community. Right now, the lack of DRM enables many to create, change, and do things fast and simple. This enables new products to take hold and enjoy.
Where would winamp be? Where will xmms be? Where will all the nice 3rd party products be?
Sigh, I need to go back to college and get a History degree, because CS will be history.
I got lucky, my mom had an heirloom.. but I was not about to be stupid and get something else.
You "MEN" (yea me too) dont get it do you? women spend most of thier young lives dreaming of the wedding day and the most "perfect" person. They have to be done right.. It HAS to be done right.
What I do/did was simple. Gave her a Carat Diamond that was worth 5 months salary (heirloom = no cost to me), and let her plan her wedding and spend the money (3 months salary) on the wedding.
She STILL watches the wedding. That is so important.
Remember you are DOING this for LIFE. If this was second or third time around, I would say dont care. If you are so hard up about spending money on your woman, then maybe you should think about another woman or forget marriage.
Once you get married, you will have no more money anyways.
I know that diets are inherently problematic because they set you up to fail.
First of all, everytime you eat something "not on the diet" you get a feeling of failure, and the more you get the feeling, the worse you feel, the more you want to eat to feel better.
Second, diets lower metabolism and when you go off the diet you may still eat less but you gain the wieght right back because your body has a lower metabolism overall.
Atkins diet is very good because it does not lower metablosim like other diets (slim fast, etc). I aided this with some metabo-life type pills and it helped me lose weight.
I find that you should only diet 3 days a week, and eat normal the other 4 days (or reverse). Otherwise, when you are at your ideal weight and go back to the "maintain" mode you will gain your fat back.. if you keep your body GUESSING as to the amount of food (gorge even occasionally) your body will NOT lower its metablosm.. heck it may even speed it up!
For every pound = 1 point of colesterol = 2 points of tryglycerides = 1/2 point of bad colesterol = 1 ounce of feel better.
Consider that when you lose 15 pounds.. thats a heavy bowling ball (try picking one up) and really understand that your body is carrying around at least 10 of those bowling balls for a 150 pound person, and 20 for a 300 pound person. Every bowling ball lost is an extra spring in your step, an extra day of life, and extra bit of self-esteem.
Oh.. and in the end, you wont have to pay double fares on Airlines anymore!!
1. Use a compiler with all warnings turned on. 2. Always have a default case in a switch statement, with a syslog or other line in it stating there is an error. Never rely on a default case either. 3. Do in-range checking on the passed in variables BEFORE you act on them. Is the passed in variable too large? etc. 4. string code always needs double checking (strcpy, strcat, strlen). Overwritting is a COMMON mistake. 5. Be careful about simple things that should make sense but does not. sizeof a string returns 4 because its a pointer, but strlen of a string returns the length.. but the length of a string is actually one more than strlen tells you. So that means to allocate the correct memory you need strlen of the string +1. Simple, but serious errors happen due to this.
Okay.. now there are common error URL's out there.. search them out and look at them.

They are "standardized" on IE 5.5, which makes some of the development harder in some ways and easier in others.
They wont even hear proposals that talk about faster extensions or browers (mozilla etc). MS owns the military for contracts we are bidding on now.
