  1. Re:Predictable - really? on Pixar Switching to Mac OS X · · Score: 2

I am sure that Steve Jobs lets Pixar be run. If he said 'Use Mac OS 8' from now on a long time ago, Pixar badass, The Man, the virtuoso who started it all Ed Catmull, would have said 'guess what? fuck you! that's what!'. There is no way they could have done anything on Mac OS or OS X until now. I am sure they are switching because with the closeness with Apple, Macs are the best thing to use now, and no other reason. They won't be straight Mac OS X for a while now anyway, they do have 3000 sun machines to replace, which they will as needed, not to satisfy a publicity stunt.

SGI is no longer the top dog and are fading quickly. Large studios are moving to Linux in droves for 3D, PDI has support from Red Hat and anyone else could do the same. Accountability is no longer an issue, expecially because large companie like that don't have to sit and whine when something breaks, they have programmers to fix for them. If they just wanted someone to complain to, they wouldn't have so much in house software in the first place, which is one reason they are moving to Linux. Macs, Windows, SGI and now Linux are all in the mix. It is obvious you are spouting cliches. I think Macs kick ass, but they are not the standard, there are too many players out there all doing a great job. And Macs certainly are used by a large group of artists who don't know any better (and by that I mean they don't consider other options, not that the Mac isn't the best, because for some things, it certainly is). Not that this is who they are only used by, but it is an identifyable group.

I'll give you audio, that is what I have heard (pun), but for video and graphics it is not so. Macs do take a larger percentage there than they do in the overall market, but there are other options like SGI, Linux, and Win2k for graphics work that work just as well (with Linux being more cost effective, faster and more stable on the very high end and windows being just more cost effective on the middle and low end). Macs are used by a large group of people who think 'Macs are better for artists' and don't know any better. Lots of people use Photoshop and After Effects on Macs and on Windows, but that doesn't make Mac the standard.

It has to be said, after playing some intense and long games of starcraft where you feel like a god if you win and worthless if you lose, I would love to see some of the best people in the world play starcraft. Think of a match between the creators or something of the sort. It would be a huge mammoth battle full of strategies, and unlike chess it would be pretty obvious what was going on. Imagine watching two side and consider the following possibilities:

    1. Both sides rush each other, one side wins, kind of boring kind of cheap.

    2. Both sides rush each other, no one wins, they both struggle and fight, hopefully pull some tricks.

    3. They both sit and build for a long time, one side has the advantage and you can't wait for the ass kicking to ensue, real drawn out, dragon ball Z style.

    4. They both build and no one is clearly ahead. Strategy and balance come into play as well as how the attacks are drawn out, very interesting indeed.

Factor in distractions, multiple players, teams, magic, the different races, diversions, etc. and you have some cheap gripping television.

I think you are right on about Adobe, they have a monopoly not because of shitty tactics because they can't pull that kind of thing with such ingrained standards everywhere, and they haven't tried eighther. My point is that if someone wanted to boycott Adobe I think that they could easily find alternatives. Maybe not in a higher end more expensive compositor, but in some programs that they could use and not need photoshop and AE. They are the best tools for the job in a lot of situations, but if a boycott didn't take sacrifices it wouldn't really mean much. I don't think it is a good idea for someone in broadcast graphics to try to work around using photoshop and AE, just that it could be done, and a boycott of Adobe is certainly possible, even in the market they do best in.

You are also using Lightwave, so why not use Aura? Shake is really expensive (10k), not really an option, but you said that there weren't replacements for those adobe products and that isn't true. After Effects has been used for some high end commercials and a few times in movies which is absolutly insane however. It does Ok, but it is very limited and slow. Nothing Real are the makers of Shake, but a more realistic substitute would be Combustion. I actually don't know of any software that is better than photoshop and serves the same purpose, but if someone truly didn't want to use, there are other programs they could use to get the same end result.
