All data is software. An image file is nothing but a program that tells the computer how to order pixels in a defined size. Running a plugin or applet (which I mostly dislike) is no different than loading an image. It's all inline programs. The app loads the webpage inside itself, the webpage loads other apps inside itself, etc. *sighs* It semms to often most people don't recognize that all digitized data that follows a format is software.

Software patents are stupid and a bad idea.. even when being used against that monopoly we love to hate. You can use off the shelf model planes (or boats maybe?) if that is all you want to do. Launch them out off the coast line and just let them make their way into Miami or some similar place. With a slight bit of hacking you could do this yourself.

I think a submersible boat would be harder to detect than a plane. It could stick up an antenea to get it's GPS coords and use sonar to look for things it might bump into.. and just land itself on some beach and send out a signal to alert it's collector where to find it.

My first thoughts were not what she was running for but to wonder if she had a web cam. Obviously, that is not proper behavior but it could be useful to her.. all those Natalie Portman fans now have somebody new to drool over and then can insure her continured media coverage by voting her into office. Can she really pull in all the trekkies, geeks, nerds, etc? If all those people voted she might do well.

To bad I live in the wrong state. When she runs for President she has my vote.. especially if she promises a 24/7 webcam of her activities.

ThizLinux is absolutely the worst Linux distro I've tried and I've tried a lot of them (over many years). Worse is that these machines seem difficult to get working with other distros unless your really know what you are doing.. making them a poor choice for average Linux users that just want to buy a cheap box and reinstall with their choice distro. However, if you can get them working they aren't bad for $100. They won't be playing any cutting edge games but they really work okay for basics.

ThizLinux ranks along with Lindows in my list of distros that are giving Linux a bad name. Lindows at least is improving though.. so ThizLinux gets my top spot of shitty distro. I don't know why Fry's uses it except for the fact that these machines are probably made in some 3rd world country and the Chinese-lang install is possibly easier for their employees to install.

I wonder if Fry's would let the local lug group (LVLUG in this case) pass out Knoppix cd's and business cards (with the lug's contact info) with each of these machines. :)

I mostly meant because I was suggesting something like a joystick be provided.. so I was suggesting that unlike most scroll mice that make the wheel the middle button that for a joystick like button you would probably want to use your index finger (which for righties usually is on the left mouse button). I guess you could retrain yourself to use a different finger but I'd think the index finger would tend to still be more appropiate for this kind of use. I'd rather see right/left handed models for this kind of thing.. or a way to reconfigure the buttons physically (maybe have both right and left buttons able to act as a joystick num and have a leftie/rightie switch on the bottom of the mouse?).

I guess I wonder how many buttons a mouse really needs. I like three and I like scroll wheels but do we really need five button mice with scrolling/tilting wheels? How long before we are using 101 button mice?

I guess I'd be happy with a three button mouse where the left button (or right button for lefties) is a joystick nub that can also be clicked. That'd do everything I need without going completely crazy on buttons.

I remember the pucks (is that still the proper term?) we used to use for CAD.. That had like a dozen buttons, worked as a mouse, and had a lil sensor that could read the symbols the puck was actually pointing at on your lil mouse-pad type of deal. That'd be a bit overkill for most uses I think.

Of course, I'm interested in replacing my keyboard with a second mouse so that I can use combination mouse movements to stand for keystrokes also.. as well as allowing you to use both mice as mice. Like the keyboard recently feature on /. (the one that looked like boobs) but freestyle and usable with any two mice. :)

  14. Re:./ers missing the point... on New Microsoft Mouse Scrolls Both Ways · · Score: 1

Taking away the ability to click the scroll wheel as a middle button though sounds dumb to me. Personally I'd just like a lil joystick nub there that can also be clicked. Then it could still be a middle mouse button, apps that wanted to could use it to scroll either way, some apps could use it as a second mouse cursor, and games would have an easy way to let you move your point of view (head, weapon, whatever) while using the normal mousing function to move your position (body or whatever). If done right that could be nice. It sounds similar to other peoples comments of mice with laptop-like nubs in that spot but evidently (from comments) those were poorly implemented. Or for that matter I guess you could give all three mouse buttons this ability.. to make it something of a combination mouse and awesome joystick. That could be overkill though. I think lil joystick nubs would be easier to use in this way than say trackballs.. as you don't want to need to lift your finger from the surface of the button.

(Does anyone else thing scroll wheels look lewd?)

Seeing those hits is somewhat addicting. Between the various programs I've released I see quite a few total hits (though many individual programs are pretty low) and always get a thrill when I see people actually using my programs. I do really like user feedback especially but that is somewhat rare.

Projects with broader appeal do get more hits and more feedback although I find that projects that are written well (few bugs or missing features) get very little feedback also. People just don't seem to write just to say thanks very often.. they usually only write if they want something.

If you're interested in donations to your project I'll say that you should probably forget it. Before 9/11 I got a small but steady trickle of donations coming in.. since then there has not been a single donation. I guess people are donated out or maybe I've just sucked since that time. ;)

Good packaging so that non-technical users can install the PHP/MySQL would no doubt help market penetration.

You could list known hosting services that offer support and could probably get them to kick back a few dollars to your project each time somebody opens an account to use your software with. I've had several hosts make such a deal with me. Many of them would also be willing to post links back to your site which again would drive more eyes to you.

The key to vertical software like this is to fit the niche well and make it easily available to the non-geek people in these fields. Put a link in each site using your code back to your project, send a flyer (or make a phone call) to local real estate offices.. maybe put an ad in a magazine or professional journal for real estate agents.
