  1. There is but there isn't on Are Marines Censoring Web Access for Troops in Iraq? · · Score: 1

censorship of the internet in Iraq. In my experience, if I was on a government computer, there was stuff I couldn't get to (though that list did not include email sites), but at the internet centers that were set up, I never ran into any site that had been blocked.

  2. Military training in the electronics repair field on Training - A Company or a Worker's Responsibility? · · Score: 1

I don't know how helpful or even pertinent you may find this, but:

I work on Radios for the Marine Corps (in particular, my specialty is those that operate in the HF radio spectrum, and one that does VHF and UHF, used for comm with aircraft). I was sent through a school giving me a basic general knowledge of elecrtonics, then a follow-on school to that teaching me about several of the radios that the Marine Corps uses, including several I have not worked with since the school. The VHF/UHF radio I mentioned was not included in this school--I was told "learn how to fix it" and I talked to some people who fix the thing and read the manual; now I'm pretty good at it. The other 2 radios I repair were covered in shcool, however, one was not covered on the component level, which I am required to troubleshoot to here. The other one, I gained pretty good knowledge of, just no real-world experience from school. When I was turned to my shop in the Fleet Marine Force, I was instructed and supervised by my section head, and others with more experience. I am now currently the section head, and am tasked with doing the same thing. In my opinion, this system is pretty good, reasonably efficient system. It worked for me, and the Marine under me currently is learing quickly. Another note I left out is that I spent nearly a year between the two schools. They also tought us details of reading and understanding electronic schematics during the radio-specific school, which is an absolutely indispensible skill in the particular line of work.

Granted, this is a highly technical field, but there's almost no possibl way anyone except maybe the most gifted of individuals could succeed without the initial training given in the Marine Corps comm-electronics schools.

I hope my comments are helpful to you.

I actually haven't even worn mine yet favoring the Under Armour I purchased myself before deploying. A note on the silver fiber, though. First, judging from experience of the others who have worn it, nothing in it prevents sweating. And second, according to the tags, at least, the silver is what prevents microbial growth.

  5. Re:Maybe they need a new slogan on Bootlegged Music in Russia · · Score: 1
When you say that the US violates the Geneva Convention, you imply that the countries we are fighting actually follow it. The Geneva Convention says that you are not to kill the enemy's medics, but Corpsmen do not wear a red cross on their combat uniforms in battle with the current enemby because they will be singled out deliberately and killed. We arm our Corpsmen, and I assume the army does the same with their medics, for the same reason, despite the fact that they are considered non-combatants under the Geneva Convention. If that's the only way to save the life of even a single person on the battlefield, then you're fucking right we're going to violate the Geneva Convention. But it hardly holds any sway to begin with when the enemy doesn't recognize it.

Now stay on topic and quit trolling! You're going to get me bad karma for posting offtopic in repsonse to stupid shit.

  7. Re:yeah on More on Next-Generation Army Gear · · Score: 1

I have to say something about this. The Army has a tendency not to learn to get around the battlefield without their utilities. I can't much comment about how well they fight without weapons, but judging by how many of them get their asses kicked regularly by Marines, it's not very good. And, honestly, I don't feel like I've been trained as well as I should have been to fight should my rifle be lost/deserviced/captured, whatever the (granted unlikely) case.

  9. Are they going to stop with computer repairmen on Licensing Computer Techs As TV Repairmen · · Score: 1

Or is this just a step in a direction? My job is repairing ground radios for the Marine Corps. With the training I have in the electronics field, if I can get my hands on a scematic, I can fix damn near anything. Does that mean that, should I move to Louisianna and set up a radio repair business, or get licensed similarly, that I need to pay 55 more dollars just because I am capable of fixing TVs? This may seem a little off topic, but that's almost the impression I'm getting from this story, that they're just looking for more income, and will jack pretty much anyone they can to get it.

While it's true that the government may as well have a probe up my ass 25/7 anyway, since I'm in the service, I'm not sure I would care about this if I were a civilian. Any time that this type of thing happens, the terrorists just find some way to work around it anyway, if they really don't want our intelligence agencies to know what's going on.

Personally, I might be said to be addicted to the internet since I'm pretty much always on it. On the other hand, that's probably because it's just about the only thing to do around here. When I don't have and internet connection available to me, I find myself actually finding other things to do. And another issue to bring up, the only things I really missed while I was away at bootcamp for 3 months, was my tobacco products and alcohol, while I did really miss my news and whatnot, I didn't have all that much of a problem leaving it behind. It's my opinion that these individuals only wanted to get out of military service, and not spend their year in prison (as is Finnish law, mandatory service, a beautiful thing if you ask me, but Uncle Sam didn't). In my day I've heard some pretty bad excuses to get out of/avoid going into military service, and this is really about one of the crappiest ones yet.

Yes, this creature would be an incredible conveniece (if one can say there's such a thing) on the battlefield, but it also has a lot of varialbes, a lot things that can faile that a soldier in the heat of battle would be screwed without, and for some reason (granted, I don't know anything about the design of this thing, but) is seems like it has parts that would be pretty easy to break without babying, and that's simply not an option when you're trying your hardes not to end up with a 30 calibre chunk of lead in your ass. Good idea, I would say, but I don't know if I, personally, would like to trust my life with this thing.
