You have to agree to be monitored by the police to use a cel phone in the states? and you act like its no big deal!
You seem to think that they are talking only about GPS enabled phones, but what they are probably talking about is cel phone triangulation, more commonly called GPS-A. To me its pretty scary because the government should not be able to track you without a court ordered warrant! thats called freedom, and it prevents SEVERE abuses of power. Sounds like this info may be archived to a database too. Very chilling.
No offense, but thats not an upgrade. thats a clean install. You might want to revise your terminology a bit because people will just blame you, as I was going to, because you never want to "upgrade" windows between versions.
If you did a clean install without formatting, then that is much much different than an upgrade!
As for your DRM experience, I have had that happen to many many windows XP machines too. Some even with stickers on the case, but MS thinks they are not legit. It really shows how flawed the whole software activation protection can be. Easy to crack anyways.
I think that by the name of the drug this would only affect nicotine addiction. Would be real shitty if it stopped you from smoking healthy things like weed.
I could briefly see the american anti-drug tsars eyes light up with the thoughts of forced inoculations!
You know I can forsee a time, a few hundred years down the line, where we are recovering from the environmental catastrophe caused by man. In this time I think the great profiteers of the day will look down shamefully on the profiteers of today, who destroyed so many of natures feats of engineering in order to harvest lumber or food. I think that they will look back at all the diversity that could have been exploited for their designs and curse us. Mankind will probably be roaming the stars in search of biodiversity by then. If for no other reason then to get the hundreds of thousands of years benefit of tried and tested solutions to engineering problems.
Are you trying to argue that I shouldn't be afraid of giving my information to an advertising company because i don't worry that my employees at my ISP could be snooping my traffic?
I know you are trying to make people who don't use google services into some sort of paranoid freaks, but it should be said that there is a big difference between trusting your ISP, who simply provides a connection, and trusting a giant american indexing and advertising company like google, who has all sorts of incentives to use your data for all sorts of profits.
Lets go through the items and see what various entities really have access to: Browser history - People who reside in my house or break in. ISP - ISP employees, network engineers, which I would like to think are too busy to care about what one one millionth of their traffic is doing specifically. Backbone - so much noise, unless you are in the states or with AT&T I wouldnt worry. Poisoned DNS cache - well if they hacked into my home DNS server I would think i would have bigger problems to worry about. Google - Indexes and catalogues much data from many different services/sources, some which track what you are searching for (thinking, googling, search history), who your friends are (gmail), indeed where you are (lattitude), what kind of media you consume (youtube), pictures of you (picasa and flikr?(not sure if google owns them)), your phone conversations (google voicemail), frequent areas of the city you visit (google maps), any newsgroups you have ever contributed to (news), and much more. They then link all that information together under an account which may or may not contain your real name, phone number, email address, real address, etc.
I wonder which of these entities most people would find the most omnipresent and scary. hmmm!
At least for me, I am just a faceless IP address, which may be natted and also DHCPed. To worry about your ISP abusing your data, if you are not an american, pales in comparison to the amount of data and potential for abuse that google has. After all is said and done remember that google is an ADVERTISING company first and foremost! This runs directly contrary to their "do no evil" mantra. All advertising companies do is propaganda. Which i am sure you know, was started by psychologists and the nazis. Two very evil groups.
So anyone who does not wish to be tracked by google, want all of their life indexed by an American company, is some sort of conspiracy nut who is crazy... right?
"Firewall! Last thing you want is some 2 y/o kid to type some random museum words like "nude" or "maplethorp" into a browser and get 20M pages of confusing things"
Thats funny, i was just discussing this today. Firefox has a really nice plugin designed by the boston museum which does a really nice kiosk and you can whitelist domains.
a 486? Why on earth would you bother? Even a p3 laptop is pretty obsolete these days, but still can be had for under 30 or 40 dollars on craigslist. That would be a quantum leap above the 486 you are planning on using.
You personally knew 3 people who died from H1N1? PERSONALLY? as in, friends, family or co-workers? (facebook friends do not count)
I call complete bullshit.
I recently got over this so called "killer flu" and I know PERSONALLY 5 or so people who have had it between my work place and my wifes. None of them have died. None have even come close to dying. Do you know how I know that most people do not die from this? The newspaper reports any death that is even remotely flu related, and there is maybe _one_ every few weeks.
So either you hang around with a bunch of horribly unhealthy pregnant leppers, or your fucking bullshitting and exaggerating the risk - just like fox news.
I believe these kinds of softwares, or others like them, will be able to fingerprint you by writing style alone. Alot of people make common grammatical mistakes or typos over and over. For instance, in the previous sentence and generally, i say "alot" instead of a lot. I also do not capitalize certain words. I am sure if you entered all of slashdot into some software programmes, you could very easily determine who my sock puppets are, purely based on writing style alone. Then of course there is the content, when most people will think nothing of mentioning the city or region that they are from. Even their industry. I am sure there are softwares out there which are already trying to gather this kind of data. Hell even i can do it if someone uses an uncommon phrase in more than one post.
After trying to get linux updates for an acer aspire one netbook that out of the box did not work, trying to find fourms and talking to brain dead tech support, i would never buy another device from them. They had absolutely zero after sale support for linux on that aspire. My friend who purchased it, traded it in for a windows machine. They seem to have a forum now, just not 6 months or so after the device came out? Weird and lame!
Ever try to add hardware to a cheap dell or worse, HP machine? I remember one hp system where the power cables from the power supply were cut to the exact length that they needed to be and no longer! I had to upgrade a friends dell pc when he purchased a new video card. A new power supply, as his one year old machine had no PCIe connectors. Then the Power supply doesnt fit in the case, so we get a new case. Surprise surprise! the motherboard is UNSTANDARD.. I didnt even think companies did that anymore.. SO it bolts right into the chasis. Short of drilling holes in his new case, he ended up buying a new motherboard and giving the pc to a relative. LAME>
i used to recommend dell for simplicity but they are just NOT meant to be upgraded. Now I always recommend a clone from a local place. Its easy to sell people on it when you explain that dell and HP use non standard parts and thats why they can come in 50$ cheaper or whatever. Most people can see the sense in not limiting their expandability/upgradability potential.
The free market? Yeah that worked great for health care in the USA! What you will have is these two companies (or 10 or 20), microsoft-a and microsoft-b colluding together to shaft customers. Its easy for them to do that as they will claim that whatever shafting they do is an "industry standard" and thus get away with it. Look at cel phone companies and their "system access fee" for a good example of that. It doesnt matter how many for profit companies you have, they will never result in the best possible solution for the consumer. That is simply not the goal of a for profit company. Their almost legally mandated goal is to make money for the owners or the shareholders. What should be done is the government should build on linux or BSD and make an OS for the people, by the people. This OS would be completely free to everyone.
The free market very rarely does anything altruistically. A good government (read, not the lobbyist mess that americans call a government, which is actually state sponsored corporatism) should have no problem producing a cheap OS for free. I believe there are a few countries which are already standardizing their desktops on free solutions. Take it one step further and they would release their OS and customizations to the tax payers who are paying for it anyway.
This is how you do it properly: Users get no rights on machines. they get added to a "domain users" group, and if you have common network drives, those get read access to that group. As for active directory, what part needs anything but read access for users? Sysvol, as long as you have "authenticated users" having read access, will get scripts fine..
Any applications on the system which need write access to the registry by the user can be pushed with registry gpos or simply setting the registry entries that the program needs to "domain users, or everyone, full control". do the windows/temp folder and map their my documents as their home directory network share and you dont even need roaming profiles.
There is absolutely no reason that you need normal users having any rights on the local machine. Its all controlled by network security in a proper setup.
"The text would become so omni-present to basically become meaningless. In one sense or another, every ad will somehow be "manipulated.""
And what is wrong with forcing advertising to be more transparent? You are saying all ads are lies, well many people have known that for years! The problem is the majority of people consciously or subconsciously do NOT know that.
I think any "truth" in advertising laws are good as they serve to undo eight decades of psychological abuse, manipulation and damage. Advertising is dangerous lies, and should without question be labeled as such until people get it and stop responding to advertising.
They should really just have a disclaimer on all ads: WARNING Advertising causes need therapy, therapy, advertising causes need.
I would have never found the best documentary series ever produced by man, Horizon.
I have learned more from watching those documentaries than going to formal schools and reading books and articles ever did. The learning, the layout and deconstruction that they provide, should be accessed freely by all of mankind. It would be a crime to lock up these wonderful programmes under DRM or similar so that people can not freely view them. They are the best most unbiased and impartial, yet still captivating, programmes that have ever been broadcast. I cannot recomend them enough.
If you are interested, and want to max out your connection for a week, I would highly recomend the following 78gb torrent of 139 of their full length documentaries Anything that stops people from viewing horizon is a bad deal in my books. Everyone on earth should have access to this resource. As I said, its almost a crime against humanity to lock things like this away.
Monetizing quality science content makes the world population stupider.
That whole country is corrupt as hell. Did you know that most merchants will claim their visa/debit machines are broken so you have to pay cash? Did you know that you have to pay 3+ euros in most places just to sit down?
A friend of mine went to italy and he says it was NOT worth it. There is so much crime, and even the "honest" shopkeeps constantly overcharge you, 10 euro for a fanta after you have already drank it, etc...
"but seriously.. if you're a Linux user, complaining about having to use obscure hacks is the ultimate in pot-kettle diametrical thinking."
What "obscure hacks" do i need to do to install linux on any x86 computer that I have purchased?
Why should I have to hack my phone, void my warranty and forgo security and related updates from my vendor because I want to run; Pirated games? Nope. Pirated Apple software? NOPE! software that I wrote at home and simply does not carry the "apple gods seal of approval".. YES!
And isn't jailbreaking dependent on someone coming up with a new method with every new release? Someone else, it should be noted, is not me. So I am waiting on some 3rd party, out of my control. The whole phones mentality is "out of my control".. its sick. It is the worst kind of DRM, default deny unless apple approves.
But its no skin of my back. In less than a year, motorola and all the other manufacturers will put out phones that do everything an iphone does, without all the appleGayTaint(tm). Early adopting has never been for me. All these compromises just to use *MY* hardware that i payed what, 400$ for? fuck that dude!
Paying 20k for a new car every year sounds good to you? You have way too much money, or no expenses. Either way you are throwing your money away. I dont think the 3 cars ive owned over 10 years cost 20k, including maintenance, added up, TOTAL...
You should consider leasing a mercedes then. Thats exactly how their sucker^H^H^H^Hpricing scheme works.
"I even got them cell phones when they were 4. According to me its a safety thing."
I had no idea there were really people like this out there. What danger do you think is posed to your kids now a days in which a 4 year old having a cel phone makes you feel safer? at 4, and really any time under 10 or so, the kid is not going to be unsupervised very far from the home. And even if they were, it is no different than growing up in the 70s and 80s when we would ride our bikes to the park to play. Despite what FOX television would have you believe, there are no great dangers in the western world for kids today that did not exist 30 years ago. And very few "great" ones in either time period.
You are an overprotective parent, my god cel phones at 4 years old?!
"Ignoring technology is a crime."
Implementing technological solutions to every problem you have should also be a crime. Overuse of technology will ruin future generations. You get kids to rely on these devices and next thing you know they would start texting you instead of running to the closest store or neighbour if there was a problem.
People who are heavily into technology often lack common sense. Giving a 4 year old a cel phone is so mind numbingly nonsensical that it makes me lose hope in the future of humanity.
"... given that you have enough patience. If you don't then probably you shouldn't be a parent in the first place."
Luckily, no one gets to "choose" who becomes a parent "in the first place". Everyone's different, and I happen to have very low patience for irresponsibility. I would NEVER buy my kid a cel phone. I would question whether or not you even have kids if you think that a cel phone in the hands of a 3-16 year old would not be abused.
Kids dont need cel phones. The only people who think they do are overprotective parents.
The submitter says they are crap web quality though (ripped from website). Couldn't find a DVD rip, but I didnt look very hard.
Never heard of this show. Hopefully it will be along the lines of pure pwnage, which incidentally has all their eps in decent quality up for free download (and has apparently been picked up by showcase ?!?). Now thats a real success story!
If i have to install oldbar and go tweak an about.config statement, then the developers have failed. I remember when they implemented this "feature". They purposely didnt make it configurable easily because the mozzila developers thought they knew better than everyone else.
I am not surprised that 25% of people will not put up with this forced down shit. The first HOUR i used firefox3 it got me in trouble with my girlfriend. It should be an easily configurable preference and it should be DEFAULTED TO OFF TO MATCH PREVIOUS RELEASES
NO one needs the awesome bar anyway. What does it save? 3 bloody seconds of typing? fucking autocomplete is shit in most cases. Even google does autocomplete which needed to be turned off. Did everyone forget how to spell words in the last year or something??? If you touch type, how the hell would it save you any time whatsoever?!?
You have to agree to be monitored by the police to use a cel phone in the states? and you act like its no big deal!
