Well true she will be the odd one out, but she will also be the only student who doesnt have their bank account hacked, or their webcam switched on by whatever programme the school district wanted to install.
That they would install ANY forced software on my childs PC should raise a tonne of red flags right there. I would most likely demand to see what they were installing, or at least, give them a fresh copy of windows to install on, and then do a security audit on the laptop. Next step would be the police and media letting them know what these educators are doing.
"In the last 4 computers I've built/had, they've gone through at least 6-7 graphics cards and 5 processors. I can't remember a single one where they both failed simultaneously."
Wow! CPU's should NEVER fail. You obviously have some heat or power problems there. I have built thousands of PCs, and only have seen a dead processor once, when someone didnt install a heatsync on an t-bird and it caught fire. Most modern cpus will throttle down if they get to hot, or refuse to turn on. Perhaps to the untrained eye, that may look like a failure. Shame if you were replacing them because of that! The motherboard is far far far far far far more likely to fail than the CPU. Graphics cards fail alot because they run super hot all the time. Basically heat = bad. I would guess you are having heat problems, or severely overpowering the chips.
seek help! I wouldnt brag about this, especially on slashdot!
"He knows I'm one of the "good guys", so it's less likely I'll be messed with."
Good and "evil" have nothing to do with the law. I think what you are describing a corrupted police force where some citizens get harassed, and others who fraternize with the police get a free pass. That is not the kind of society i would be bragging about living in.
I recently fought a speeding ticket in BC. I went to court, was prepared with radar gun manuals and specs, what I thought was the regulations regarding calibration and many other defences.
They were all struck down. Things that i learned: - going down a hill, moving with the flow of traffic, not enough posted signs, and many other "commonly accepted" defences were explicitly stated by the judge as not holding any water. - The police officer does NOT have to prove that the gun was calibrated in any way. His word that it was calibrated was "good enough" in the judges view. - Police are trained to make a visual inspection of the speed. They MUST make a guess at your speed in their head before firing off the laser or radar gun. Their experience in estimating speed is treated the same as laser evidence. - there is no "paper trail" on the gun, and they do not have to prove that the gun registered a certain number. - the judge makes or breaks your case. its pretty much the whim of the judge whether you will get off on a technicality or not. - bring some sort of previous case law that backs you up. I tried hard to find some relevant stuff, but obviously did not try hard enough.
So I lost, but it was fun actually, going through the motions.
Another thing i should say is that i was simply unlucky in the end. There were approximately 20 people there in the court fighting tickets, and 10 of them got to go scott free as their respective cops didnt even show up. No show = automatic win if you show up. So it is worth fighting every ticket and pleading not guilty, at least initally. Just dont expect to win if the cop shows up.
Just my 0.2 cents as I just did this a few weeks ago in BC canada. ymmv.
"Tomorrow when they get the unspoken mythical number correct"
How obtuse you are. I have tried to trick out my girlfriends facebook privacy settings, but it seems there is always another page somewhere that you have to hunt for. Also, there is no quick and easy way to opt out of everything. You have to go to every app, every website that has a facebook tie in, every picture gallery, etc and change them ALL manually to opt out of "sharing my information with anyone who asks" mode.
Its complete bullshit. sure, you can go into your filesystem ACLs and hand edit every file to have the correct permissions. No one does this however, and thats why you can apply permissions/acls RECURSIVELY from parent. What I would want for her is a big button that opts out of EVERYTHING. Add to that a nice concise privacy page. Note how i said PAGE, not pageS spread across the entirety on the site. Then I would say, add as many fiddily little options as you want. So long as the giant opt out button still works for them all, and when they add new features, they don't opt you in automatically, as is currently the case.
I have always hated facebook, but I didnt know the true hate till i went to ehow.com - or any number of a growing pool of "facebook connect" sites, and saw a picture of my girlfriend on there with the option to leave a comment about the site. What the fucking fuck! i still havent been able to turn that "feature" off yet, because i cant find the damn option! Aparently, if you have logged onto facebook (that day?), you are automatically "connected" to a host of other sites. So now i have to go to facebook and make sure my gf is logged out, every time i use the computer.
Perhaps you could think of it as akin to a program which has zillions of undocumented commands. Amazingly powerful and yet completely useless at the same time. Sure some people have cracked the correct syntax to get facebook to perform the stop-auto-tie-in-to-all-garbage-sites option, but why the fuck should it be so hard?
There is only one answer and one alone - deliberate obscurification and mis direction. It is the same answer as to why everything is opt OUT instead of opt IN on facebook. They rely on people being too lazy, confused and stupid to care.
So stop apologizing for what is at best bad UI design, and at worst willful obscurification that leads too (surprise!), expanded profits for facebook.
"But friendships formed online don't regularly lead to face-to-face meetings."
The author of this retrospective was dead wrong. I know plenty of people who chat on facebook and then meetup in real life. Its generally for dating purposes. Not to mention craigslist, and the multitude of online games, fourms and other avenues to connect your real life to the internet. Infact, I think gates was more prescient than the author is giving him credit for. If you had asked me 15 years ago, I would have said that was unlikely as everyone uses pseudonames and tries hard to hide their real selves.
This is clearly no longer the case, so I think gates was correct that the "superhighway" has led to more face to face interactions.
I have just done this with one of our new file servers. Dell supports EFI. You can partition it however you want, but if you are making a raid 5 array, you are better to make one huge drive (mine was 4.5tb) and then partition it off. You need to use EFI in this situation. The OS (non efi) will not accept a "slice" of your giant disk to boot on. This is because as i understand it, you cannot put and MBR on it. SOOO, you can get a boot drive, and make it its own array, wasting 2 1.5tb disks (or whatever) or you can let windows make its mandatory efi partitions,( 1x 100mb and another system one i think around the same size) and then give 60gb or whatever to your OS drive. That way everything is fault tolerant on the array.
Like i said i just did this last week with 2008 server. It may not be 100% correct, but it got the job done. I had never done anything with efi before, and did have to do some console commands in the windows installer to prepare the disk, but it was pretty easy.
This isn't about freedom or liberty, companies should NOT get a free ride on any marketing, much less marketing to children. Mcdonalds is one of the worst in regards to marketting. They specifically target children most of the time. No self respecting adult would ever consume mcdonalds products voluntarily, it makes the healthy sick. So what do they do? they target children by giving away "free" toys, having cartoony animals on their boxes and showing adverts of kids subverting their parents wishes and having over the top emotional experiences.
Its not hard to say 'no' to your kids, but why should i have to catch all the flack, animosity and blowback that mcdonalds is creating? why is it my responsibility to clean up the mess they are making after the fact? If a company tries to brainwash your kids, how is it "bad parenting" to legislate that certain over the line brainwashing techniques be banned?
Your attitude seems to be that mcdonalds can spit on my kids (advertising) and that "good parenting" would be telling them not to eat the spit and cleaning them up. I say good parenting is going after the root cause of the problem in the first place. Instead of making band-aid solutions that as most parents are aware, will just be eroded away again, leading to another fight in a few weeks or a months time, when macdonalds comes out with an even more insidious ad.
Perosnally i try and teach my kids to be aware of advertisements and that they are all lies. Many people just don't have the time or the intelligence to teach their kids that. That is why particularly manipulative marketing needs a swift ban. I mean you are basically talking about the freedom to sell products and saying that the rights of the corporations to sell products trumps the rights of impressionable children not to be manipulated.
I dont know how any parent can make that claim. They should really just ban all product marketing to children under the age of 16. I cant imagine a downside to that.
"You are free to download all the porn you want yourself, outside of Apple's store."
I was under the impression that all software on the iphone had to be acquired through the apple app store, using apple itunes. You are saying there are competing app stores which do not require you to crack your phone?
I hadn't heard about those, please enlighten us all. Surely if there are other places to get apps, then people who have had their apps banned are just whiners, as they can pick a competing store. Right?
i came to say that exact thing. Also that "kids" should not be using cel phones in the first place. Not until they have a job and can actually pay the bill.
The palm had starcharts based on long/lat and tetris, probably pirated but still, chicks LOVE tetris! It was a hit at many parties in my late high school years.
"don't get it twisted and think you deserve the content."
For all the "theft" from the public domain of so vary many things in the name of copyright extension and having corporations own creative works, your damn right I deserve the content. If I cant sing god damn happy birthday because some company in the 1930s purchased the rights to what was then a 50 year old song, then fuck it, its on. I have zero respect for companies that have zero respect for me.
As for the directors, actors and other associated people, they have already been paid. I would also like to think that they made their movie to be seen and convey their message, not to be locked away in a vault somewhere. Creating culture has been done by humanity for hundreds of thousands of years. Locking culture down for 70+years after death of the originator is a recent invention of american corporations. They have taken so much culture from us, which is much more analogous to theft, by locking it up and depriving us of experiencing it. They are the ones that put locks on everything, pirates merely cut off the chains and set us all free.
If you cant upgrade, simply go into \conf\apache.conf and comment out the line that loads aspi:
#LoadModule isapi_module modules/mod_isapi.so
restart apache service and you should be good to go.
And to all those people who are like 'lolz! who runs apache on windows lolz!', i would say plenty of people. Because apache is far far far far far superior to ISS. Hopefully they have done it like me and made a low privilege local user to run it. It takes a bit more work but not much.
wtf are you talking about? you simply make your network a preferred network in windows XP.
Any idiot can do that. face it, the AC parent of your comment just fucking owned you. you ALWAYS have the option of using the wireless config which is built into windows.
For the record, I have flashed other peoples firmwares on their wireless routers, and changed their channels to get rid of interference, but you are just being a straight A dick. And not a very intelligent one at that because you cant even get XP to use a particular network.
I find it hard to believe it is even illegal in the usa. When i am at the gym, there are many ads for party poker and other online gambling sites. Not sure what country you are from, but if american TV channels are any indicator, online gambling is alive and well in the USA.
Of course, if i were to run a "online weed distribution" business, THAT would probably be shut down quick, because its actually illegal to sell.
Sorry, how is that a scam? Because the OEM's dont provide a CD, (or non destructive CD, as the case may be)? Because microsoft decided to have 2 versions with Xp and like 10 with vista/7? Have you ever tried to repair an OEM machine? You cant just use a normal XP cd on that. Often times its much easier just to install a corporate copy, then to try and find whatever magic cd the OEM has decided to use. The user just wants their computer to be up and running again. What would you have the tech do? call dell and get them to ship a new XP cd, wait several weeks for it to arrive, come back and slot the CD only to be told that it whipes the entire hard drive? fat fucking chance! Especially when they know their non professional "technical" friend can reload it in a few hours. This is common knowledge now.
Its 100% microsofts fault. They are the only scammers here. They colluded with the OEMs to make the systems difficult to repair, forcing you to go out and buy another copy retail. The technician installing a pirated copy has the same interest as the consumer in mind - fixing the damn computer, getting people working again and not having to charge an arm and a leg. if microsoft wants to get in the way of that at every conceivable opportunity - well then whoes fault is that???
Microsoft needs to drop the whole TIERED model of software functionality. Release a completely seperate product, ala MCE if you want. What you don't do is make 10 fucking versions of the same OS, but some more crippled then others. Consumers don't know how to buy and OS, or the difference between remote desktop versions. The differences in these artificial demarcations are often trivial or ridiculous. The customer just wants the same shit that everyone else has (read: compatibility). The more microsoft "diversifies" their shit, the more consumers will get fed up with it and switch to MAC OS, which is already happening and even worse for computer evolution - but thats an entirely different flame. For their part, OSX doesn't even NEED a cd key. Apple does occasionally do a few things right.
"I'm setting them up with virtual machines soon, to run optimized images of XP for their games, and whatever else they want, in a secure sandbox."
Ah, and you dont right there, consider that to be a failed linux deployment? Running games in EMULATION? yeah thats gonna perform real well with modern 3d games...
Don't get me wrong, i love *nix, but if you have to install a virtual XP machine to get major functionality working (games) then I think linux is not ready for MY desktop. I have the same issue.
"You don't have to get bent over by your OS distributor. But you will as long as you let them."
So I assume that you will concede that YOU are letting them bend you over currently, as you are still running their software in a virtual machine? you can lie to yourself all you want, but the fact is you are still giving microsoft money for that virtual machine license. Unless of course you pirated windows! but we wouldn't have done that would we have...
Im so sick of people saying OMG you suck! move to linux! and then in the NEXT PARAGRAPH, going on to say how they are running xp in a vm. I just wonder how people can contradict themselves, (in the same damn post!) and not feel somewhat disingenuous about it.
Telus is pretty much regarded as the worst telecom company in BC. What have they innovated exactly? Switching their network from GSM to 3G to play catchup with rogers and fido? Or maybe its their innovative use of customer service staff and technicians who are more concerned that you are connected to the wrong department, instead of actually dealing with your problem. Perhaps its their innovative use of limiting your ability to buy services or support because your specific rep has taken a 5 week holiday?
They certainly innovate into auto enrolling you into $$$ telus branded cisco support contracts, which are EXACTLY the same contract provided direct by cisco, but you have to deal with brain dead man in the middle telus employees instead of the real technicians at cisco. Thanks for auto renewing my contract for the last 3 years for me! Whats that, you want me to pay an invoice for services that i did not even know i had, much less use? thats telus's new innovative billing!
But what would all that innovation be if you were allowed to run your own webserver on a residential connection? Good thing that telus doesnt let you run fuck all on any port under 1024! I certainly also loved how they innovated new ways of traffic shaping on even their supposedly open business connections. Or their innovative use of fibre splicing techniques that makes novus, rogers and a fucklot of other companies basically sit on their asses till a telus technician can crack a manual and connect two strands together. If there is one thing that telus innovates over all else, its new ways to sell customers equipment, and then send technicians out who get paid 120$ an hour to 'learn as they go' on it. I had no idea how much they loved to educate their employees at the expense of their customers uptime and cold hard cash. Thats innovative learning right there!
Lets see what else... they innovated a way to use 4 technicians to remove a single pay phone. Two to crimp and uncrimp the wires, and two more to TURN THE FUCKING BOLTS IN THE BASE OF THE PAYPHONE AND UNSEAT IT. (why dont you make that data connection modular, then we could just remove the payphone ourselves - to a dumbfounded look and then a stutter of; WE CANT DO THAT!!!)
Oh i got another one i just remembered. They innovated a way to sign you up for two cel phone contracts AT THE SAME TIME! how useful is that! you could like, talk to yourself? Their HTC and LG handsets which are carrier locked, 5 firmware versions behind, are certainly inspiring me to innovate new ways of airborn phone destruction.
So basically what I am trying to say I guess is this: Fuck Telus!!!!!!!
"the market for people who'd pay for privacy is quite small"
Why should i have to pay for what should be a fundamental human right? I am not paying for a privilege, I am trying to defend my rights against greedy corporations. OF COURSE, companies are not going to do things unless it makes them money. That is why we have laws. Ideally, corporations should have the most laws applied to them! Far and above the ones applied to citizens. Canada stood up to google, and now all the faces on maps.google.ca are blurred.
"Little in life is free, and businesses that run on millions of dollars of hardware and fast internet connections are going to need to finance that."
Actually, the best things in life are free. The worst things in life try and monetize them. A "business" like google is probably more of a public utility at this point. Who purchased their internet connections again? If you are in the US, your tax dollars paid for them. I would say "nationalize" the search engines, but the american government is the most corrupt of all. What we need is a UN type body of scientists and mathematicians working on search engines. A truely global search based on taxes. Far better than for profit corporate greed. I know i would rather pay a flat rate small tax then have to be constantly exposed to therapy inducing advertising 24x7. But then again, I value my mental state, which is not true of many in this world.
It seems some times that the world is completely backwards. You have corporations selling yourself back to YOU so that all the middlemen get to make money. American corporatism is fucked. so unbelievably fucked in the head.
Except when they put in the contract that they can change the terms of the contract at any time. Like this women found out when they started charging her for incomming text messages. Sure you can pay $3 a month to resume your normal operation, but I think the time has come to have iron fisted regulation on most of these companies. There is way too much collusion and "industry standards".
Of course the solution is never to ever buy a contract. Personally, i can calmly laugh at all these locked in slaves, but it shouldn't have to be this way!
"now people are acting like dogs in heat, trying to mate with anything that moves."
Now? i think you are about 60 000 years too late to be saying that only NOW we are acting like dogs. You seem to be ignoring most of history and pre-history there!
Infact, I would not be surprised if the dogs didn't learn it from us!

Innovation at telus? LOL
Im pretty sure most places on earth don't get above 50*c even in the summer. Maybe you meant 5*c?
Except when they put in the contract that they can change the terms of the contract at any time. Like this women found out when they started charging her for incomming text messages. Sure you can pay $3 a month to resume your normal operation, but I think the time has come to have iron fisted regulation on most of these companies. There is way too much collusion and "industry standards".
Of course the solution is never to ever buy a contract. Personally, i can calmly laugh at all these locked in slaves, but it shouldn't have to be this way!
Now? i think you are about 60 000 years too late to be saying that only NOW we are acting like dogs. You seem to be ignoring most of history and pre-history there!
Infact, I would not be surprised if the dogs didn't learn it from us!
all them babies didnt make themselves!
