  1. mostly valid points, but.... on 5 Reasons Not to Buy an iPod · · Score: 1

the article makes some good points. low battery life, too expensive. my suggestion would be buying an older iPod. the old 20 gig model has 8-10 hours of bettery life, and goes for about $300 (same as the newer 10 gig one). you can get a 5 gig one for under $200. (and not used off ebay. either new, or factory refurbished)

yes it isnt good for jogging, etc. if you're jogging, you're probably not gonna need more than 2 hours of tunes, and a flash based mp3 player is fine. (unless you're running a marathon?)

as far as having a choice in online music stores, you do have a choice. but you have to make a choice and stick with it. choice #1: use iTunes and iPod. choice #2: use something else.

umm, have you ever heard of this thing called math? $26.50 / 100 discs = $0.265 per disc. that is 0 dollars and 26.5 cents. which is what the previous poster said. of course there's the fact that you can usually find blank CDs that have a mfr. rebate, bringing the cost down to 5-10 cents per disc, but PLEASE tell me where to find 2.6 cent blank CDs.

  5. Re:Propaganda on Mac P2P Music Sharing with iTunes is Online · · Score: 1

i dont think that's entirely accurate; if you download something, and read it, listen to it, or watch it (depending on what it is) and then delete it, that's similar to borrowing something from a library. libraries dont let you keep everything, which is uaully what happens when someone downloads something. also, libraries usually have only one copy of a book or movie or cd, so only one person can have it at a time. with file sharing, everyone can download the same file and keep it forever. don't say it's the same as a library.

  14. my thoughts on this on Apple to Launch Music Service? · · Score: 1

$1 per song is too much. (i think most of us agree on that). i'm willing to pay, maybe $0.25 to $0.75 per song if i'm downloading it and it's not CD quality, plus i'm not getting any liner notes or anything.

Full albums should be discounted (e.g. emusic used to do $1 per song, but $8 to $10 per album.) i.e. a whole album, downloaded, should cost less than buying a CD in a store, i.e. $12 or less.

a lot of people say 'i'm paying $15-20 for a CD with only 2 or 3 good songs on it'. the songs they play on the radio. the way radio works, you only get to hear those few songs from an album, and i've found in many cases, the songs they don't play are often better. most bands dont just try to write 2 hit songs, and 10 filler songs (unless they are trying to cash in or whatever, in which case they usually suck anyway).

if i had access to any song from any major label, for about $0.50 per song or $10 per album, even if i could only listen to it on my mac and my iPod (which is what i do for the most part anyway), i'd be very very happy.

  15. Re:Emusic on AOL Enters Music Service Fray · · Score: 3, Informative

emusic kicks so much ass. the reason i started my subscription was because the had a deal with they might be giants to get a bunch of exclusive content, as well as all their albums (that weren't on the electra label, anyway). i signed up for the 12 month thing, at $10/month, which is pretty damn cheap for unlimited downloads. even if i download 1 good album a month, it's still cheaper than buying CDs. i've spent hours looking through all their artists. occasionally i'll find one i've heard of (Reggie and the Full Effect, Alkaline Trio, Dirtbike Annie, all stuff i'd been slightly interested in but wasnt gonna shell out $15 for a CD), and they give you recommendations based on the stuff you download, and sometimes those turn up somthing good. plus they have tons of jazz, blues, classical. and they're always adding new stuff. i check all the new albums once a week or so, and i usually find something good. emusic isnt a replacement for buying CDs (or however you get your music) because the only have a limited catalog. if the major record labels had something like this, i.e. unlimited (or even limited, like 5 albums per month) in plain old MP3 (maybe you'd like ogg or something) i'd gladly pay $10, or $15, or maybe even $20 per month, and i'm sure tons of other people would too. i guess that's all i have to say for now.

  25. Re:Not the first CD like this on Michael Jackson Releases Uncopyable CD · · Score: 1

i definitely buy less CDs than i did before MP3s because popular. now, i only buy music that i really really like. before, i bought a lot of stuff to sample (granted i usually only bought things i suspected i was gonna like anyway). but now, iif i want to find out if i like something, i download it. and to any people who look down upon illegal MP3 downloads (but this is slashdot, what % of poeple here do, honestly?) i also do emusic. i have a legit supcription, and i've definitly downloaded at least a gig of music from them, which about one third of my napster, limewire, etc. to get on topic, i loathe the idea of copy-protected CDs, becuase the first thing i do when i get a CD is rip it, and put the CD away, for good in most cases. not being able to do it is probably going to make me buy less CDs rather than more. if the RIAA and artists want to do this, they should make software that allows ripping the CD to copy protected files, and burning to copy protected CDs (for mixes, MP3 CDs, etc). until they provide some way for people to use these in the versatile way that is available, people arent going to like it.
