Sure, Closed source has its disadvantage: it crashes on my MVP3 machine, AGP isn't supported on these motherboards, but get over it, Closed source != end of the world..
I went through the whole demo. I can give an honest impression of how Daikatana has potential, but something is fscked up the demo. I haven't tried MP yet.
The demo is just NOT attracting when the first contact you have with monsters is some robotic mosquitos. Ion Storm, the first impression with a game is the most important thing and will decide if your game will sell or not. Seeing robotic mosquitos could have made sense when playing the whole episode, but as a first level, it just felt.. weird.
Seriously I would have put this level last, so people could watch what Daikatana really has to offer.
I liked the Sidekick stuff. Ok maybe there are some AI flaws, because I sometimes asked the asian girl (Mikako I think) to come where I am, then she answers "I can't go there", but she's right beside me. But that's a minor flaw that can be corrected in an upcoming patch (and they still have a whole month to work on it before it's releases in stores). Ordering your sidekicks to attack, to get the weapons can be pretty strategic. They also tend to aim little critters much easily than you (hey computer AI can have pretty precise aiming, you know):P
Pumping up a bit the intensity helps a lot. I tried to leave it at 1 and 100% brightness, but everything was too dark to see (turrets would popup without I would really notice, I couldn't see the control switches to blow so I can get rid of them, etc.)
The amd3gdl trick helps a lot too. It boosted my framerate by a large margin. AMD users, change, in your data\config.cfg file, "gl_driver "opengl32" to gl_driver "amd3dgl"".
The monsters can get stuck in the walls, and that griffon got stuck in the rocks in a pretty funny way, and the model would move screwily trying to unhang itself. The worst is that by my own eyes it wasn't even stuck. But again, this is something that can be fixed in the AI.
The level design is a bit low-poly count, for hey it's the Q2 engine with the old BSP method; it's not the most efficient available (IMHO). But try boosting the poly count, and you're going to slow down the framerate like no one.
The snowing was damn impressive though. The raining is more subtle, but damn impressive nontheless.
The sword is awesome. Ok not the best weapon to fight with, but slashing everything was interesting (though I can't understand why it makes a solid blue mark when I hit the sand in the beginning of the second level).
The marks in the wall is the best I've seen yet. Duke4ever will probably beat that, but it's another game that will be delayed for years to come:P
Some sounds could be reworked. The asian girl sound act is a bit cheesy, but not too goofy to ruin everything.
Daikatana could be more interesting if MUCH less monsters were there, and almost NO animal monsters. Only human. Hey, from what I can understand, there is a human mastermind behind all of this (but we don't know the story, so my words are pointless. This could be some Space Mutants from The Simpsons who are ruling everything!) Of course, the battles would be MUCH harder, but personally, I'd like a better challenge from the enemies themselves, and not the number of enemies attacking me (though the eight mosquitos at the end of the first level is quite challenging if you don't know the 'we're stuck!' trick).
If the AI can be fixed (they do get stuck pretty often), this is a game I could consider. After boosting the intensity, putting the amd3dgl OpenGL driver, getting a nice framerate boost, and seeing the sidekick feature (nice thing IMHO), and also going to the 2nd level, things went to the better.
How the demo could be fixed: Put the third level instead of the first one (PASSAgE, I can't understand that little g) first, showing the snow, and how you start to chill if you go in the water for a bit too long (losing health, of course), and showing instantly the sidekick feature, everyone would love it. Guaranteed. You'd get a hell lot more sales.
.. first, the mosquito sound is REAL cheesy, I've heard 10000x better even in Ken's Labyrinth (ok the sounds were all OPL2, but hey it sounded better still)
second, attacking a bunch of mosquitos, frogs and alligators isn't the type of game I was expecting of Daikatana. The worst is that maybe the other levels are interesting, but I can't even figure out how to beat the boss in the first level. Well they should have at least put one of the most interesting levels in the first level - not the worse of the game!
third, I can now understand why all those people fled Ion Storm.. this game is going nowhere, period, at least I'm not convinced until I get positive feedbacks from a courageous gamer.
What if it was Eidos who asked Ion Storm to make a crappy game? They only know how to release such games... (Tomb Raider. FF7 (FF7 isn't crappy in itself; it's the 320x240 graphics I don't like). Tomb Raider 2. Tomb Raider 3. Tomb Raider 4).
Let's crack RC2-2 ultra-secret encoded messages with it.
It's sad to know that by robbing one of these Enigma machines, you don't really get anything useful.. but it'd be interesting to know if I can program it to crack RC4-128 stuff, though I'll have stopped being on the face of the planet for at least 10,000 millenias.
Open source can bring great software from the big corporations too - and from the individual who sacrifices his valuable time to make a small project and later, maybe become a bigtime project. Hey, I'm sure the GNOME project started like that too!

Now I've got an idea: to test the real potential of Linux, and at the same time, to know how many really supports Linux - imagine if Blizzard released StarCraft for Linux for free! I can already see a swarm of people going there - and Blizzard will be remembered forever as the company who brought Linux games to the mass.
Of course they'd do the same if they released WarCraft III for linux at the same time. Hey they did a port for Macs for every game they did, and they'll probably do the same for WC3 - since the game's in 3D, to port it easily for Mac it'll have to use OpenGL. If they use OpenGL, it's trivial to port it for Linux too! They'd have a real winner here, and again they'd be remembered as pioneers.
Why I'm saying Blizzard is the force and not id software? Blizzard's games are far more accessible to the mass and secondly we need another company besides id to tell the world that linux is getting serious on the gaming scene...

If you still think that the current Q3A CTF lacks, you may be happy to know that there's a group working on Classic CTF (http://www.quake3mods.net/cctf).
The group is formed to bring back the best elements of Q1CTF and Q2CTF - including the missed grappling hook and techs! Here are some of the stuff that should make it in the Classic CTF mod (taken from their website):
Map remakes: McKinley Base Stronghold Opposition Smelter Da Ancient Wargrounds Two Towers
The runes/techs: Auto-Doc, Power Amp, Resist, Haste
Items: The Grapple! Ammo Boxes Skins (just like Quake 1/2) Green Armor (25% armor) A new model for the lightning gun. Discharging in water will be put in too. The Super Nailgun is back! New team skins to use instead of the standard ones that came with Quake 3.
Misc: The HUD will be remade to provide the best possible information. Dropping weapons, runes, and enemy flag will be possible. Regeneration and Haste will be disabled since there are techs to do that. New textures. New sounds for the flag sounds and the runes sounds. The flight powerup will have a special effect. Flags will have a new model/skin for them. New player models.
This is the CTF I've been waiting for! Not some crap Zoid wanted to do because 'q2ctf is not the CTF I wanted to do, and I do q3ctf like I want because it's what I want to play'. Argh. Well if that's what "listening to the gaming community", I think this has just NOT been respected. Also, as it turns out, almost all the q2ctf community wants q2ctf back in Q3A, and even q1ctf!
(I must point the fact, though, that the q2ctf competition in OGL [http://www.ogl.org, almost always down for some reason] is getting non-existant as days goes. They are moving to Q3A for the gameplay issue, certainly - Quake 2 just plays like crap compared to the best gameplay I have ever seen in Q3A.)

This is not the case when something interests you, and if zillions are following the Super Bowl, probably it is because there are some interesting stuff thrown in it (though don't ask me why the ads and the half-time show went there.. they surely haven't been there in Super Bowl I).
My point is that the human race needs something to occupy his time - the superbowl, the ads, the half-time show happens to be an event that interests more people than usual (it has been broadcasted in 182 countries). I consider myself a computer geek, and my god, I just can't stand sitting in front of a computer 24/24.. I need something else to entertain me! Bring me a hockey game anytime! Bring me some Ren & Stimpy! I just love being brainless for a while.
The traditions has an important place too.. if people like the ads and half-time show, you'll bet it'll return for more. To keep him interested next time the Super Bowl will come.
Of course, I didn't forget the football game.. one of the greatest and very climatic at the end! Dramatic end! I couldn't have asked better.
This is because the newer kernels are using more and more cutting-edge technologies, like USB, AGP, and stuff (and oh man, it seems there are much more advances in the 2.3.xx tree than the 2.1.xx one, and we're only at the patch level 41, not 120-and-some like 2.1.xx) - and we need more and more testers to test this bleeding new code.
I just saw that 2.3.41 has a new CPU listed in, "K6/II/II" (typo here), now I'd like to know if it'll speed up my K6-2 by a factor of 5 :P
I myself don't have this new stuff (USB, FireWire, I2O, I2C), but since USB and AGP support support is the critical part of the 2.3.xx branch, we need ppl to test this. Now if nVidia can release drivers that supports DRI..
2.3.40 is rock solid, I guess I should turn on some alien features then :)

This is a cheap and fast way for anyone to get a little more known - and I do think that music should be where open source software is - free.
They are afraid of an *algorithm* - why wouldn't they sue the MP3 algorithm creator then? If the RIAA think that the MP3 is doing THAT much of a damage to the whole music industry, I think the creator should be responsible..
I also want to point out that if we had 10 times the bandwidth and 10 times the hard disk space on our drives, and if the MP3 standard didn't exist (or any encoding algorithm), people would transfer WAV's.
(To the RIAA): Now let's replace the term "MP3" with "WAV". It's easier to understand now that it would be illegal to transfer pirated music, but that if the WAV files are completely created from scratch, and the creator wants to distribute his music freely, then let him do that. I just don't understand why you are sueing MP3.COM just because it's a different format !!
Map remakes:
McKinley Base
Stronghold Opposition
Smelter
Da Ancient Wargrounds
Two Towers
The runes/techs:
Auto-Doc, Power Amp, Resist, Haste
Items:
The Grapple!
Ammo Boxes Skins (just like Quake 1/2)
Green Armor (25% armor)
A new model for the lightning gun. Discharging in water will be put in too.
The Super Nailgun is back!
New team skins to use instead of the standard ones that came with Quake 3.
Misc:
The HUD will be remade to provide the best possible information.
