  3. compete with google video chat on Skype For Linux To Be Open-Sourced "In the Nearest Future" · · Score: 1

When I read this headline my first thought was this is to complete with Google. Google is planning to release google video for linux when they do a netbook OS or something like that. So many netbooks use linux (even though wondows is making inroads). And people buy netbooks for VOIP - I did. Right now Skype on Linux is clunky. It is doable but it is also a pain. Skype is also almost synonymous with VOIP. Few people know what VOIP is but many know what Skype is. Like Kleenex. But Google could disrupt that gravy train because Gmail is so ubiquiotous and it really isn't far away from having the video chat work from "inside" Gmail - if they did it on Linux too for netbooks they could really usurp that title the way Google Usurped Yahoo's king of the search engine title so long ago.

Just my thoughts. I was pining for the Linux Google Video feature a while ago while I was setting up Skype (and it was a pain) because I thought it might be easier. Also it would be much easier to use with my email addressbook than the few people I have bookmarked in Skype.

But the problems with Skype in Linux are relatively minor: things you can (and we do) hack around. But this is a big obstacle for many non-techy users like my wife who had to wait for me to do it for her. So if they open up Skype (or just symbolically go through the motions and get more geeky hacking) then may;be they can get over the little bugs like figuring out the quirky microphone settings required for skype to work on my netbook well... such that I don't have to hack it my self and people have no reason to desire a Google replacement.

Still it will be tough for Skype because Gmail video can really just blow they away if it is done half well - 1 program instead of two - or 0 (browser doesn't count) obstacle to adoption.

Actually this is exciting only for the auto industry because it allows them to continue their rape of the earth and bullying and killing us in our public streets all while calling themselves the eco green next new thing. People will buy new cars thinking they are "saving the earth." The reality is that most of the pollution from cars is due to the manufacture of the car and the roads - things which change 0% depending on the fuel in the tank. Solar 100% would be the same issue. A minority of our wasteful consumption is in the actual driving fuel. Just owning a car is destructive. Car fuel use is already quite efficient and it mostly serves to have people thing driving is sustainable and cheap so they buy more cars and drive more and build more roads for us to cross. Even though there are already lots and lots and lots.

As well, we now have quieter cars which will sneak up on and run over pedestrians and wildlife with just as much gore. And we have drivers staring at their fuel consumption gauge rather than watching the road. Seriously, people brag about driving this way now, I've heard it several times.

I'm not usually so worried about superficial looks. But, using a browser is such a primary thing it needs to fit into the desktop and have nice fonts to read since you look at it so much.

Did you do anything special to get Chrome to look decent or are you just more tolerant of this sort of thing than I am? I'm just using default versions from repos on Jaunty. I'm pretty sure my FF (swiftfox actually) came with a default ubuntu skin theme so it looks good.

Any suggestions? I suppose I could look into prettying up the WINE fonts but that all sounds like work to get a browser to play with that won't have plugins I use. But i also get weird flash video issues and I'd love to use your method to get around that. Also you can't simply restart FF and have it save all the tabs in multiple windows, have to kill it from the command line then the crash protection kicks in. Kind of a messy approach imo.

There is so much energy from users reporting bugs etc. There is so much development all over the place. What we need is a system to help focus those energies together. To make the bug reporting user feedback less annoying or overwhelming. To make development that meets public goals more satisfying. It's hard but not impossible. It's about managing information so that it gets where it should. Most developers are driven by the idea of people getting satisfaction from their projects. But right now, often the feedback isn't helpful.

Also, getting more newbies into development is a great thing. Still it is too involved for most to make the leap into development. I've tried a few times but I just can't hack it (so far)... but I know that at some point I will get there.

Also, these things take time. Rome wasn't built in a day. FOSS is not old. In computers people think too short term still. Over time as technology and everything matures we'll get this right.

But if Ganymede has a liquid core wouldn't that contradict the moment of inertia finding? It would support the fluid dynamics creating magnetic fields theory. Anyway, this stuff is all beyond me but I'm sure you are right that the moment of inertia is a very relevant factor that gives clues on what might be inside there.

Seems like there will be lots of computer simulations to test out these theories because the systems seem complicated.
