My buddy few days ago, told me his flash/firefox is crashing all the time, however.. my firefox(iceweasel)/flash isn't crashing at all. I sometimes watch youtube for hours, opening 5-10 videos at the same time, everything works like a charm.
It only crashes when I open specific porno tube site, but I think it's not related to Flash, since in opera, it works ok.
Depends with what software they have been 'sniffing'.
SSID is broadcasted in 802.11 beacon frame, along with some other stuff.
So if you turn off the SSID broadcasting, you'r removing the SSID info from the body of beacon packet, so regardless you have traffic or no, your AP is gonna show up (without ssid so you will not know the name of ap) in something more advanced then netstubmler. Kismet for example.
I don't have anything against Amarok. There are cool features, and adding music and stuff is imho, better then in xmms..
What users want ? Well, if im not mistaken, users (and I mean joe average) want simplicity, effectivnes, and all that to look pretty.
Amarok is ugly for a music player.. This is maybe matter of opinion, however, I know quite a few people not wanting to use amarok just because of those reasons i mentioned.
It looks like a email client, its not really that simple (at first, but enough if theres a choice), its hogging down the computer (some are aware of this some are not, but most of Linux users are aware). Assuming of course, they are 'using' Linux and Amarok, not trying to see whats the hype with all this linux stuff, then after three days googling for how to remove it.
I noticed amarok have a lot of popularity, IMHO, that's only because there's no normal music player for Linux. You mentioned that ncurses music player and stuff.. Im not a zealot, what I want is music player that plays music, and have decent song/playlist management features. Looks nice and stuff... if I already use these fancy desktop enviroments like kde, gnome,...
Winamp 3 (i think.. the old simple one) was a success, and everyone used it... when they overbloated it with all that they have now, no one is using it anymore (at least not the people I know used it before). Or they install some light version that looks normal and acts as a music player. If they have a choice.
"I'm not saying you're wrong to want what you want, but you are wrong if you expect Amarok to give you that. That's not what it's there for."
That's fair enough. Im only speaking in the word of few people I know. So, why not address the issues, if the people who develop it are aware that they will probably do better, if they 'fix' it.
That will gain more popularity for their project and more support, and make everyone happier.

1. Amarok looks like an e-mail client, not an music player (Yea, I know about Show player window but the option is barely usable). 2. It uses around 100 mb of RAM.
So if you'r a developer of amarok, instead of bloating it with uneccesary features and whatnot, you guys should work on minimizing RAM usage and speeding it up a bit. - If your already working on that, good.
Xmms was a way to go, but xmms lacked playlist management features, and it was not maintained properly, so it failed.
For the record, I use Amarok too, since Linux lacks better player now.
A lot of people think just the same about all this, so.. I think it needs to be said.
Try to accept the critic in a positive way, and please, stay away of 'ram is cheap' philosophy. People really don't want to waste 100 MB of ram, to listen music, but most of them aren't aware it uses that much ram. Its a music player for god sake..

Right. I'll bet the Serbs said the same thing about Kosovo - and now look at them. Post WW2 the population of Kosovo was about half Serbian and half Albanian Muslim. Amazing, isn't it, given the ethnic cleansing of the native Albanian population by the Serbs under Milosevic. Interesting thing about Kosovo -- it was created as a province of Yugoslavia in 1945 to protect its ethnic Albanian majority. If it was ever half Serbian, it was so because native Kosovans were rounded up and executed. Or maybe you missed that? At any rate, the notion that it was half Serbian at the end of WW2 is poppycock. Albanians are a majority on Kosovo because, the Serbs where selling their land for unussualy high prices to Albanians, and moving to Belgrade, etc.
And because their typical family has 5 and more children and then those children have 5 and more of their own children.
Yeah, the illyrian people where on Kosovo first, and then Slavic people came and assimiliated them to what we know today as: Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro.
Albania didnt even exist.
It is almost the same as your country did to Indians, and is doing right now. Taking over by force and war land of other people.
Cleansing of Albanians on Kosovo ? Ok, true.
But when you say something like that, don't forget that Albanians also did some scary and messed up shit, and they are protected by your(American) government while doing that.
And we all know what's you government like, if you don't, then move to europe and watch the injustice your "country" commits to the rest of the planet for their own economical interest.
If you find yourself offended, so be it.
Im fucking sick of your false democracy, and of using "democracy" word as an excuse to attack other country's.
Whats wrong with asking question ? No matter how you'r good, or maybe you have some solutions and plans already, but asking a "slashdot" where majority of users are some kind of admins/programmers is not a bad thing, since you can learn something every day...
Almost every admin has its own style/way of doing stuff. Some are better, some are not that good, but they are all productive, so nothing wrong with asking.

No man, you are talking about something I didnt write.
You talking about video and high bandwidth needs, but if you need high bandwidth need you don't take a 'cheap' package... you ask for more, you ask for best quality... money is no issue there. You are mentioning your customers, the people you sell something too.
You CANT expect for that to pay $15 USD.
Again, I don't mention exactly http vs p2p, im thinking http, ssh, voip, irc,im and others vs p2p.
The truth is again, 99 % of users dont download linux over torrent, they are downloading porn..
And, you can get reasonable speed using http get, at least I do whatever I download. On 'rare' occasions I cant download full speed.
Yes, but the majority of users don't understand that.
Don't forget we are not talking about slashdot users, we'r talking about joe average, who even don't know what 128kbps mean... they know what $15 usd mean, and what $50 usd mean, and they are not in hurry to download a movie since they have a monthly flat, they got a life besides computers and internet.
Having said that, Im doin' them a favor, not damaging them.
And if you say, yeah.. but what about one of them who knows ?
- Get used to it. Thats what democracy is. The majority are right, and the minority.. needs to adjust. Im a minority myself, in lots of stuff, and thats how world function, so If you want anything to do in a world yourself, you need to act the same, but of course, not to step on people and do really bad things, just to succed. And I don't mean succed in capitalistic context, but succed in making people generally happy, and helping them.
Those who want more, contact me, and I'll give you unlimited, but you will pay for it a little bit more, so you not affect the quality i try to provide for other users. Not a commercial, im long way from you guys, just trying to prove a point.
You are (partly) right. Basicly.. if I sell x mbps to you, you should be able to get it. In my case, I sell only 128kbps (p-t-mp, wifi) because my current infrastructure cant support more then that.
But, is p2p a priority or wikipedia (for example) ?
Aren't the point of 'internet' supposed to be a source of information and education, instead of 'fast' movie leeching ? I quoted fast, since I don't block p2p, only slow it down, since movie downloading is not a priority, nor it should be.
Im not excusing those actions, im talking about real world situations, where everything is not perfect.
Would you like better to have a 'decent' internet connection, or you want isps to delete firewall rules and not prioritize traffic, so in a year you get crappy internet connection which takes forever to download a clip from youtube ? or whatever.
You CAN get 'dedicated' internet link, where no one will shape your traffic, but it costs money, so if you want speed, you pay for it.
You cant drive a car with 1600ccm and expect it to go from 0-100kmh in a 5 seconds.
In my case, if I stoped shaping p2p, i would not be able to continue working, and 90 % of my users will lost a ISP that is providing them with cheap (and reliable, for that money) internet.
So you think about which is more important.
I suppose its the same with verizon or other isps, but different figures.
Maybe a little offtopic, but still relevant in some degree.
First of all.. Im tired of reading posts that bash isps. Of course, 99 % of isps suck, but not because they throttle bandwidth for p2p, youtube and rest, but for other reasons.
(Please try to be objective, while reading this...)
I own a little isp in my (suck ass) country. I give internet to the people for cheap prices, 128/128 kbps flat for $15/month (this is the cheapest net possible here).
It is really a problem when many users use p2p, since I need to pay to MY isp and im responsible to other users, who don't use p2p.
So, what I do.. I shape p2p using L7 filters to 64kbps (half od full user link) - in effort to provide the best quality to majority of users.
Ok.. if you want a non shaped full speed link for every protocol, let's say 512kbps.. no problem. I'll charge $400 usd (thats the standard here), but you cant expect to have the same 'position' as those users who don't use p2p, and need responsive http/ssh or other protocols.
Imagine isp with 100K users.. 70 % of them bashing the link with p2p leaving all day long active, and the rest of them bashing the link with youtube... thats unacceptable, not because of materialism, because of common sense. You all got high speeds for little money, and complain all the time... for god sake. You want quality, pay for it, and if you pay and your isp doesn't provide you with quality, sue them.
90 % of p2p traffic is illegal content sharing anyway (not saying agains it, im downloading often movies and other stuff, mainly because I cant buy it here).
Im giving net in good spirit, while everybody selled 128 kbps for 50 usd, i sold it for 15.. so if i shape p2p, you shouldnt bash me or other people because of it.
Be objective, and keep an open mind. Everyone got problems, including isps.
Of course.. I don't support sending RST packets to bitorrent ports.
.. your business doesn't depend on it.
Seriously .. powering down failover boxes or something like that is not wise thing to do.
Imagine in some fucked up situation, when your main systems goes down... you can't boot failover servers for some reason ... long fsck, or whatever.
You can power off the servers that aren't critical .. Why question on slashdot for that ?
Logic anyone ?
There is. I searched for that too.
