I think what we need as something akin to the GNU Public License for writers as well but with some kind of a modification that enables them to collect what little royalty that can come their way at least then...
No, what is needed here is a standard way to do accounting, a contract writing that is fair and just, and a transparent system for publishing. Those with the most lawyers wins is how the media companies are playing the game - and then they barrow a page from the banks and nickel and dime everyone to death.
This is pure naked avarice (greed) here, and if the Writer's Guild can make it more palatable to their members then they will. But lest not forget that if they can screw the publishers and get away with it, they would.
IMHO
If they do, whistle blow.
Accept the fact that they - the company that you work for - is looking for every advantage that they can find, and if it means that they can abuse the GPL they will. Any and every advantage.
You have a moral and ethical problem, and you need to figure out what is more important to you (job or karma), and what the ramifications are for your actions.
I would certainly talk to the orginal developers about your company's plan to co-op their code as well, and hire a lawyer of your own.
No.
It's the same thing as a CD that can not play in a computer. If it does not follow the written spec, then it can not be labeled as the product.
Just out of curiosity - could the electronics companies just go ahead and use what they want, or would they then be 'not allowed' to use the DVD name because it doesnt conform to the predetermined standards?
Thanks, I think I just figured out my new sig

Since any sane person would not dream of breaking the law, only insane people break the law. Thus, if I break the law, I must be insane.
So, you Honor, when I wrote my program to break the copy protection scheme, I was insane.
It was noted that he took money from Enron and disqualified himself from the case. It is also noted that he took money from MS and has not disqualified himself from the case. Hummm....
Folks this is tongue in cheek here - I think we need a law that deals with crimes against the Constitution. Any person caught proposing a law or voting for a law which is later found to be in violation against the Constitution shall be banned from any government work, either as elected or appointed. If found to be lobbying another elected official after being banned, all those who were lobbied can not vote on the legislation lobbied on behalf of.
Although H.B. Piper had a few good ideas in his books too... Anyone else up for a law that allows up to shoot elected officals that we feel aren't acting in our best intrests?
Yes, but not in the way that you think.
Remember that part of XP is a GUID, which contains the MAC address of your NIC, plus any other unique serial numbers.
A few thing that a quick Google search turned up:
GuUID Explorer
and JunkBusters' web page on GUID and MS' software. The History and Advisory are good reads here.
But what else can be done to solve this problem with China and other Asian countries? I agree that the 'no response' from many of these places is frustrating, but has anyone offered to train[1] some of these people in setup and configuration of their servers? Has anyone who is bilingual offered to translate the user manuals into Japanese, Chinese, or Korean? Has anyone taken the time to explain to them that by lax secuitry / improper setup on the EMail server usually points to more problems with in their network? Education is the answer to this problem, and we need to take the lead.
[1] Okay, it might be impractial to fly halfway around the world to train someone in server configurations just to stop spam, (although a cost/benfit analysis might prove otherwise if the volumn is extream!) but has anyone offered to train someone from Asia on this side of the globe?
Sonny Bono was a democrat. It was Sonny Bono's copyright act which extended the rights for another 20 years. Please, don't think that it's the evil Republicans vs the good Democrats, neither side is good or evil. Judge on the facts that the canidates in your district are running on, and vote for the best person. It would also be nice to talk to these people, and maybe educate them on the issues. Last and least, VOTE. (Just not early and often)
Picture.exe virus to grab your PGP keys? Pretty damn scary stuff if the Chinese goverment is releasing this stuff into the wild. (But really no different than the FBI's key logger)
Do I have the right to watch or not to watch what is being broadcasted?
When a commerial comes on, should I be forced to watch that commerial or should I have the right to change the channel, get up and get something to drink, use the bathroom, make a quick phone call, or do anything else? Should I have the right to mute the TV during commericals. Do I have the right NOT to watch a commerical?
I say yes.
The TV stations and studios can not force me to watch something I don't want to.
Oh well, it's not like any high quality programming has come out of Hollywood in a long time any how.
(Side point; I won a Tivo, and have not used it once).
This has become a pissing match, flogginy a dead horse, or what ever your personal cliche is.
We' gossipping ala Fucked Company, and frankly this doesn't belong here.
I'd rather do something far more intresting with the data on it; See how many form letters there are - both pro and con.
What 'reasons' are the most popular.
And all other sorts of statitics.
Place the HD in a humid bathroom to keep the dust particles down. *snicker*
Wonder what happens when the mositure condenses on the inner workings of the drive. Make a dust particle look like a cake walk.
Oh, and as a photographer, most of us don't use high mosture areas for development work, we have an HEPPA air fliter in our darkroom.
I'm use to their sometimes poor reporting standards, but this one had way too many errors in it even for me to be bothered to finish reading it.
Also, has anyone else noticed that Tom's stuff really isn't up to snuff when compaired to his compeditors?
On the slashdotted site, the price was listed for $2995. Way too much there for what you are getting, even more so if the posting above is correct that the machine is diskless.
Also, 40 pounds? My server isn't that heavy!
Yes, and just this past week El Al screwed up big time by allowing a passenger board with a gun. The guy realized it when he got to New York and turned the weapon over to the Israel embassy.
I personally would rather have the ability to review all of my data that they collect and selectively block information, or even better delete it.
Having worked for on of the largest companies in the Data Mining sector for mass mailings / customer identification, I can say that the amount of data collect on you as a person is very very scary; they know just about everything about you and can build a profile quickly on millions of people - since all the records exisit - it is just a matter of sharing between the collectors.

(vis-a-vis The Faculty, that horrid Ski-Fi movie a few years back which he had a minor role in)
So much for that democracy thing.
Maybe we can have King George move in?
Why haven't we replaced ICANN yet????
The internet is designed to route around problems, after all!

Well there's always these two riddles:
How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
And
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Toosie Pop?

Tivo owners watch the Super Bowl? But...but...sunlight, outdoors...sports...
It was held at night, indoors, and we were all watching Britney.
Hang-On by Sega had fake Marboro Ads in them - came close enough to the real thing that they were sued (and lost, I might ad). This was in the 1980s.
