  9. Unethical advertisement omits substance and facts on Net Neutrality Is Just "Mumbo Jumbo" · · Score: 4, Insightful

Time Warner Cable in Green Bay, Wisconsin has been airing this advertisement. I agree with some of the other posters that we should look at both sides of the issue before calling the commercial a blatant lie. Being someone who has worked for a long time in the telecommunications industry, I feel that Net Neutrality is essential for freedom of speech, nothing more. Let's face it, the monopolies that currently "own" the bandwidth in the United States are going to, "raise the cost to consumers," with or without Net Neutrality in place. Why make it more difficult for unpopular ideas (ie, those without big corporate funders or lobbyists) to have a voice?

The thing that I found most disturbing about the advertising was its total lack of substance. Never once does it explain how or why costs would rise, etc. It felt really slimy, like a poorly done political mudslinging ad (which, some would say, it was). My gut reaction is that nothing in the advertisement was blatently illegal, just very very unethical simply due to what it does not say. Deceipt by omission of fact is still indeed a lie.

I don't think the "Little People" had anything to do with it. AOL, just like any other company, just cares about the bottom line. I can imagine the advertisers freaking out and calling AOL, saying, "You numbskulls! We don't want XYZ Book Club or ABC Mortgage company associated with loss of privacy!" AOL just did what they had to do to keep the money flowing in. And to the advertisers I say this: I would NEVER associate your products with loss of privacy, since I've already blocked the domains that AOL's ads come from at my firewall anyway!

How about good ol' walking ?!

Well, have you ever been in a public space with a large group of people? As simple as the concept is, many people can't seem to understand that there is a reason people go to airports, etc... they are trying to get somewhere! However, throw in a few shutter-bugs taking pictures of everything, or social butterflies that have to stop and talk to every third person they see, and you've got one large fleshy traffic jam. If I could bypass all of the slow, stupid and otherwise unmotivated people by stepping onto a rolling sidewalk, I'm there! At least there would be a minimum speed. Of course, I'd be one of the people still trying to speed-walk while on the thing, but even when stuck behind someone I'd still be moving.

Of course, I can see this invention starting a whole new type of road rage... perhaps I should go to France and try it out before they make laws against bumping someone out of the way "by accident."

Your best bet is to look at the full headers of the message to see what IP address the virus came from. Next, use something like ARIN Whois (http://www.arin.net/whois/index.html) to find out what ISP that IP address belongs to. Then forward the original message to this ISP *as an attachment* (this preserves the headers with the IP address and timestamp) and ask that they contact their customer. Most ISPs can check to see what user was connected to a certain IP address at a specific time, thus telling them who is infected. Most ISPs won't actually tell you who the sender is (mostly for privacy reasons, but also to prevent people from getting in fistfights over a virus that probably wasn't sent on purpose to begin with!).

  21. Tech Support Hell on Version Fatigue · · Score: 1, Interesting

What about people stuck doing tech support (myself included)? It's not any fun trying to figure out where the settings went every time a customer upgrades to a new version of something. Common settings should have common menus, regardless of what version you have. It's always a pain in the ass when a customer goes out and upgrades to the latest version of M$ Office and they can't figure out where the mail server settings went in Outlook. Since the company I work for prides itself in our customer service, we try to help customers out when they call, even though we don't officially support Outlook. Each version of Outlook has slightly different menus. I'm sure this is great for places that charge for support, but it's only a drain on the resources for ISPs and other places that provide free support.

I think M$ should change their slogan to, "Where did my menu settings go today?"
