while it won't solve your fan chain problem, smarthome's new insteon technology look promising. It's got 900mhz wireless for 150', plus powerline signaling and x10 backwards compatability.
CPU's with speed step aren't for desktops, they're for laptops. What are the ethics of posting a story with a backwards headline on slashdot? Surely I'm not the only pne who noticed this?
When I was looking at little embedded motherboards to play with, I came across the Via Eden with a 800mhz C3, standard dimms and everything onboard. They're nicer than most embedded 486's or that sort, and only $129 most places. Unless you need a teenie, tiny motherboard, why go arm?
I build computers at a video game company, and we usually buy the fastest processors. Our average cost per computer with AthlonXP 2000+'s is about $800-900, so it's not even that expensive. The Pent4's are also fast, but the price/performance battle goes to AMD. Lately we've been prelighting our levels in Maya. It's about 4.5 times faster on a 2.26p4 vs 1200 Athlon TBird. We need fast computers for floating point math, baby!
I'm guessing these 333FSB Athlon's will be a lot faster if they can keep them cool enough. I'm also guessing that today's hot-ass chips will be remembered as the stone age of computing in a few years, hopefully.
My idea for an active power device would also connect to a PSU, but it would go inside a computer case. It would consist of a cpu, motherboard, harddrive, and various other life support systems.
My device would have the capability to wrangle any sort of copy protection removed from items digital that I purchase.
Dreamcast Media Player is the first usable DivX player for Dreamcast. Even though it's 'usable', it's still very early in development and doesn't yet support sound. It runs at around 20fps on 320x240 resolution, and already supports a few cool features such as zooming and bilinear filtering. Currently it only plays Open DivX files, so the common DivX;) 3.11 encoded files won't work. Even though this player is in very early stages, it shows a LOT of promise. Look for great things to come from the Thenesis group in the future.

Seems like boob.uk is slashdotted right now, but also check out dcemulation for news about emulators for the DC. There's a bunch.
There's also quite a few cool proggies to do other things with your dc. MPEG vid players, streaming mp3 players, and demo disks to check out.
And if you're thinking about running linux on the DC, my man Fivemouse has got 119MB Disk Juggler images you can dl and burn up. And check out his GBA webserver while you're there.
Yes, it is. Here's a link for the really lazy... Wait, it didn't work. 3d gamers has it, though. Follow the clicker on Blues News if you think you're smart enough, jackass....:)
The now discontinued 3com Audrey is on sale over at Tiger Direct for a cheap $89. Add on a $40 USB network adapter and you're in there. I kinda want one, but I'm gonna get a wireless card for my labtob instead. Dig it...
I don't really worry about library hell, cause I use Red Carpet from Ximian. It's free, it does security updates and such, and it resolves dependencies pretty well. I think linux really need more auto-updating software to make it less work to run. Red Carpet is just like Winders Update, cept there's a BUNCH of software available and I don't worry about anything breaking.
I like Ximian so much, I even bought a shirt from Think Geek. Hold me down...
I posted sort of a follow up on my website <a href="http://www.35thave.com/article.php?sid=5&am<nobr>p<wbr></wbr></nobr> <nobr> <wbr></wbr></nobr>;mode=thread&order=0" target="_blank">35thave.com</a>. It's got an ISO images to burn your own, links to more DC info, and an exclusive movie of linux booting up on a dreamcast. Check it out, it's kinda cool.

This feature is sure to raise some interest with the linux crowd. (In black, right column.) : )

My girlfriend tell's me, the night I read about the accelerator card, I talked in my sleep, which I don't normally do. I rolled over and said, "So, do you want me to speed up your main rendering computer?" Funny to me...
Am I the only one who cringes every time tech-support says "DSL modem" or "cable modem"? Quick quiz, who remembers what modem means? It's modulate/demodulate, which is the warbling sounds modems make when two computers are connecting. My Timex/Sinclair 1000 sounded the same way when it was recording data to audio cassette tapes.
My dsl ROUTER doesn't make that noise! Dig? It doesn't even plug into a parallel port, so hell yeah it's external... : )
BTW, US Worst mailed me the modem and setup booklet a month before my DSL was operational. And, yes it works with linux.
I'd say there IS a market for commertial apps on linux. And why not? Linux is a better OS than most, and the OS is free. But when I show the GIMP to photoshop users, they don't get it. You could sell them $600 worth of photoshop regardless of the os it runs on.
I'd hardly think of a harddrive as an asset to a gaming console. What's it good for? An internet cache? I've got dsl, and I load database driven sites. New games? Let 'em stay on the server. When I connect to the server, I'm playing version 1.2.7 automatically without having to patch it.
Playstion games look better now than five years ago when the PS first came out. Why? Because the programmers got better. Why? Because they weren't wasting time trying to integrate COM 2.0, or Direct X 12a, or whatever MS trys to sove down developers throuts. PS programmers just focus on the task at hand.
So a winders based platform means Joey down the street can develop his own games. You think Joey won't need to replace DLL's? That's one of the reasons why winders crashes. And yup, harddrives will help that problem manifest.
Next, let's talk about the price. If(the nintendo site didn't state any sources for their info, mind you) it really does come out in 2001 with a 1GHZ cpu, I'd think it'd cost WAY more than $150 with those specs.
If there was a 1ghz cpu to be had for under $400, that'd kill the PC industry all together. Think about it. Way more power than you need, in a $150 box? Where's the space to squeeze in a $40(or whatever...) winders licence? They'd be killing themselves!
Lastly, comparing a console to computer hardware is the old apples/oranges argument. PC gamers buy athlon 800's and GeForces to be able to run 3d games with 5000-10000 on-screen polygons at 1280x1024x32bit color. NTSC (that's those TV thingies) are more like 378x200 something. If you do the math, it take rediculously less power to drive the same number of polygons around at that resolution. The propossed x-boxen would have idle CPU cycles, which means it was over engineered, which means it costs too much to build regaurdless of the price. : )
So maybe MS is thinking about a PC replacement? That kind of power would run winders NT pretty well, but it seems a little light for winders2k. That much hardware could drive a real monitor just fine. It'd also run Linux pretty well, and I'd guess it will about 4 months if it ever comes out, which it won't.
while it won't solve your fan chain problem, smarthome's new insteon technology look promising. It's got 900mhz wireless for 150', plus powerline signaling and x10 backwards compatability.
Get a laptop and throw it all away.
If GTK stands for GIMP Tool Kit, and GIMP stands for Gnu Image Manipulation Tool, wouldn't GTK = Gnu Tool Kit? No digits, but it's all math. : )

I've seen the black and white screen iPaqs for $200 with a $50 rebate. Handhelds.org couldn't tell me if it'll run linux. Can you?
KOS 1.1.3 also runs on Game Boy Advance. As for getting into it *cheap*, lik-sang.com has a GBA coding cable for $20. Bang!

check out www.nosepilot.com. I recommend the englis' version, cause english is hard.
It says on the logo on my Dreamcast box, SuperH - MIPS. Thanks for the second correction.
And if you think the Dreamcast doesn't have an sh4 you're wrong. Linux/NetBSD for DC is a novalty, but it's cool enough to mess around with.
