    Some cities do have fairly effective local mass transit systems. For instance, visiting Boston and Chicago provided a breath of fresh air compared to the mediocre bus system in my hometown. (I've heard good things about the NYC subway system, but I've never been to the Big Apple for any length of time.)

    By the way, one characteristic of a local mass transit system would be how well it supports going to/from the suburbs.

    However, the local network in some cities is a problem, and the US intercity rail system ... enough said.

    Since CouchSurfing is supposed to stay noncommercial AFAIK, that might not work out so well for the person with the space available.

    I suppose one needs weasel words in the legalese for odd cases like this, even if things normally go OK. I'm not too deterred by odd-case horror stories (also see PayPal)

    (I've never been on Craigslist, and have use AirBnB and CouchSurfing only once each, so I admit to a lack of specific experience.)

    In my years at RIT, I heard a lot about something called "the Hub", which sounds like this kind of thing.
    [Since I lived off-campus (and thus was away from the on-campus network most of the time), I didn't feel the need to find out more.]

    * RIT also has a innocuous "Hub" that's a printing/copying shop

    I'm going to detour from the Dire Straits references for a bit and make a Black Sabbath reference: Tony Iommi downtuned his guitar for the Master of Reality sessions to alleviate some stress on an injured hand. (Non-injured bassist Geezer Butler mirrored the move) Though I doubt you'll have as much luck as he/they did, try that. :)

    Changes in Congressional salaries can't take effect until after the next election. (The main idea was probably to keep congresscritters from immediately voting themselves raises, but the wording prohibits 'varying' rather than 'increasing'.)

    However, ancillary Congressional expenses (staff, facilities, etc.) presumably could be cut.
    You're right that it's a symbolic gesture of only a few million out of several trillion, though.

    the silver market is smaller than the gold market, so that makes it easier for Hunt Brothers-esque gamesmanship.
    granted, though it's clear that federal spending is crazy, I'm not sure if going back to a metal monetary standard is the answer.

    "lower spending/higher taxes, sell less in bonds and print less in FRNs" doesn't necessarily mean reviving gold certificates and/or silver certificates

    I see sexual orientation as a somewhat different issue from these nonsexual behavior traits.
    We don't want our daughters ending up as maladjusted weaklings either.

    (pak9rabid did not use the most diplomatic phrasing, but I see a point in the concept. :P)

    seconded; I feel the "boys will be boys" aspect was a key part of my Scout career, which in turn was a key part of my general personal development.

    The Boy Scout summer camp I went to has a rifle range (.22's at paper targets).
    I forget if the powers that be removed the safeties or just taught us not to use them, but the point was to rely on proper behavior for safety, not lean too much on mechanical safety devices.

    The CAC is that kind of thing, but a DoD-specific version of the concept.
    AFAIK, Linux support for the CAC is further along than Mac support.

    yeah, I've heard that before - if an actor has the same name as another actor, SAG makes said person change their business name even if not their real name.
    (back to my example, Katy Perry chose to take that stage name so as to avoid confusion with the actress Kate Hudson)

    I know mainstream celebrities tend not to be popular around here (mentioning Gaga in the summary was asking for trouble IMHO), but if you want to use the social network in question for other things, does it really get in your way?
    It might even be a good thing even if you don't care about it, the crowd helping sustain the social network's business model [with a small marginal cost for less-popular uses]

    The name changing seems more prevalent with actors and actresses; a lot of pop stars seem to use their birth name as-is, or use part of their birth name as a mononym. Ahnold is mentioned above as an exception to the actor naming pattern, Katy Perry (born Katheryn Hudson) is another exception to the popstar naming pattern.

    I've seen the name credited as p/k/a ("professionally known as")
    DBAs are more for smaller-scale business ventures (whatever the industry); there's a web of LLC's and regular corp's here.
