  1. Re:Newbie Question on What Normal Users Can Expect From Ubuntu 8.10 · · Score: 1

Who says it won't work on other computers?

At work, I use one for all of the desktops, and one for all of the laptops (because if its a desktop, I can uninstall alot more drivers to slim it even more, and the same works for laptops too). I use mine on a variety of hardware, and just make sure that I integrate drivers for everything I'm gonna use it for.

And if I forget something, I can just re-launch nlite from ANY computer and use the saved nLite profile on the disk to add what I need and still keep my current settings.

It doesn't have the full hardware support that a live-cd does, sure....but for windows users its a godsend if you use it properly.

  2. Re:Newbie Question on What Normal Users Can Expect From Ubuntu 8.10 · · Score: 2, Interesting

You install nLite in windows. You create your disk with SP3 and every other thing you'll ever need integrated into it, then you remove what you don't need with it (usually about 200MB of useless junk). A normal SP2 Microsoft disk is about 580MB I think, whereas my SP3 slipstreamed in with nLite + my drivers is only about 250mb after massive compression. Install takes about...ehh...5 minutes, including the reboot.

Then you use the same disk over and over and over again :)

I'd recommend. It's not the best. It freezes if you try to do anything during that initial first scan. BUT....

unfortunately, we have 20 unused tapes already bought, and my IT budget would be eaten up for the next 6 months if I did 2 NASs. The best part is that I'm just an intern...they haven't hired a steady IT person since 2002 when the dell server was bought lol cause none of their interns could solve any problems. So far I've done a VPN, fixed 10min logins, and made every printer accessible in ten days, so I'm a god to them haha I'll probably get 4x 160gb sata drives (2 for server, 2 for single NAS) and still run the tape backups after the NAS is done copying it.

What would you recommend then for a 30user non-profit business with a 136gb scsi drive and tape backups they have been running (but not realizing that they weren't completely backing up everything)? Thats the crap I just inherited...I was thinking moving to 2 sata drives in raid 1(the scsi drive sounds like it's gonna die soon) and fixing the bloated folders so that tape backups will work again. Differential appended tape backups M-R and a normal backup on friday after the workday seems like the best idea.

Get a 800x600 photograph and blow it up to 1280 wide, then look at someone's face....you'll see things that you wish you didn't see looking at it at 100%. Autoscaling on photoshop for zoom is where most people bork photo editing...i always do touchups at 100-500%

I know you'd love to keep it as simple as possible, and thats great...but... Can I atleast have a 2GB of RAM option on atleast one of them?!?! I know the cost would go up, but I could use it and would definitely pay for a netbook then. My ideal system would be 500-600$, Medium cpu, 2gigs of ram, the option to have preinstalled linux, xp, or both. Nice Wirless-N support out of the box, and a decent video card (that will never happen though...its either Intel junk or Via junk). I'd also love to see a system with 8gb of flash storage and a CF slot. I guess its a normal mini-notebook, just without a cd drive and has flash storage, but i'm not willing to pay 1500$ that they offered for those a few years ago just to have a small one.
