We on slashdot are pretty much the only ones who care about net neutrality. My dad(*) doesn't have a clue why it's important.

The App Store is the most flagrant example of non-neutral app built on top of the Internet. But if you were to push the argument further, I have restrictions on how many pictures I can upload on Flickr. Is that neutral?

Sure. There's lots of other sites where you can upload as many photos as you'd like. You're not restricted to using Flickr and Flickr alone like you are with the App Store. The App Store is the only "certified" place to download apple applications for iPod Touches/iPhones, while Flickr is one of many different sites that do the same thing.

Flickr's just trying to earn some money; is that wrong? I happen to like Flickr as it is and I'd gladly pay for more space if I needed it; or I could just use Imageshack or Photobucket or any of the other dozens of image hosts out there. With the App Store, you're "locked-in". See the difference?

I think you forgot "view slashdot". I thought it would have been obvious; guess I was wrong =\

This isn't as simple as you think it is. Let me give you a classic car analogy:

You buy a car. You really, really like it and it does almost everything you want it to do, and it does it well. Note the "almost". You want it to, say, play back FLAC/Vorbis files in its CD drive and you know that it's possible, so you find a way to hack into its computer system and insert some code someone else wrote that will give you what you want. However, you are not legally allowed to do so. Why not? It's your car, right? You should be legally able to do whatever you want with your car, regardless what any company says about it. It's YOUR car.

Apply this to iPhones. What if you don't want to use AT&T? What if you want to run an app (such as a SNES emulator) that's not available on the App Store? You can't. Why not? It's YOUR phone, right? There lies the issue.

The DMCA, limiting what consumers can and cannot do with their LEGALLY PURCHASED products? What if I want to rip a DVD I bought overseas? What if I want to play NES games on my DS? Why should ANYONE limit your legal right to do these kinds of things?

If you want to be "normal" and not care about anything, go ahead, but PLEASE as least swear a *little* less? You're not making anyone think you're smarter by doing that, you know.

  12. Metroid, anyone? on Re-Examining the Immersion Factor For First-Person Shooters · · Score: 1

The absolute best gaming experience I've had when it comes to immersion is definitely Metroid Prime. The game completely blew me away the first time I played it. It's just you, nobody else, on a planet fighting against ETs and Space Pirates while trying to figure out what the heck is going on. Retro Studios never made the game too unlike the previous games in the series as well; this isn't an FPS, it's a First Person Adventure. The puzzles were innovative, expansions were well hidden and fun to find, and the controls, while awkward, worked surprisingly well. The graphics were absolutely beautiful to look at; your HUD would show things like raindrops hitting it or condensation appearing from steam/heat!

The reason why I think the game was so immersive was this: Retro never made players care about the story! The game went on without any real "story" happening. You had to figure out for yourself where to go next, how to beat certain enemies, and everything! You had to "scan" items and enemies to figure out parts of the story and how to defeat enemies. The game gave you this feeling like the world in the game was going on without you animal-crossing style; go to an area one time and something happens, go there another time and different enemies/sequences are present. I was only a pre-teen when I played the game first, so you can imagine how thrilling it was to watch a metroid breaking out of its casing to attack me, and after wondering where to go next for a split second a space-pirate jumps through the window and attacks me.

If more shooters want to be successful, make the design choices that Metroid Prime made.

People like you need to understand that there is no point refuting Evolution. Evolution is the glue that holds Biology together, and without it we wouldn't have: Paleontology, Micro-biology, Medicine, Genetics, among other fields.

Here's a simple thought experiment: If Evolution is false, what created swine flu? The only other possible explanation is that God is a dick, and I don't believe that.

I believe you're confusing Evolution with Natural Selection. Natural Selection makes absolute perfect sense, and a man would be a fool to not believe it (its like denying gravity's existence). On the other hand, the assumption that everything descended from a common ancestor, which the Theory of Evolution says, is still open to debate. Sure, there's "evidence" to support these claims, but has it been 100% proven? No! So I suggest shutting your mouth and getting your vocabulary straight before you criticize creationists. Thank you.

Actually, I set the language to English. And for some demented reason, dvd::rip rips my movies into multiple files of the exact same size (except for the last one) and one of the files was in the wrong language.

I am betting you set it up wrong, since the disc name really shouldn't effect anything. It could be your ripper program should point at /dev/dvd (or equivalent), not "/mnt/Mounted File System"

I always have it set to point to /dev/dvd, but that never works and claims it cant find anything. Only if that doesn't work I set it to /media/[insert mounted filesystem here].
