I know this title is a little dated but it is a really good read. You'll know you're into it if you make it through the whole book in a day or two.
The Dueling Machine - by Ben Bova
You can find a used copy on amazon for like $1.50 or $2.00
Rather then fighting, men enter this dualing machine to work out their differences. It's like you enter into a cyber world. You have to physically kill the other person within this cyber environment in order to settle the dispute, and then you exit back to reality, and both men are fine / safe, and the dispute is resolved.
This is a really cool idea, and if I had spare cash I'd probably buy one. ..
But "This looks like a nice place to store a persistent homedir..."
I just don't think 128 megs is practical for the average geeks home directory, I have like 2 gigs+ of stuff in my home directory, and I know I'm not the only one...
Still a cool idea to move files around, and keep a set of handy utilites with you at all times.
I have a suggestion, how about an AIBO for less then $200? I'd love to buy one of these robots to play around with, but I just can't justify spending $500+ on ebay for one of this toy^N^N^N^N^robots.
I know right now you probably consider your Principal and his assistants the enemies, but they are there and do care about you and your educational experience.
Walk into the office before class starts and ask the secretary for an appointment to talk to the principal or assistant. Explain that you want to start a computer club and you need to talk to a school employee for some direction and know how.
Not only will they see you, but you'll probably get to get out of class for at least a little bit.
Explain what you want to do, and what you need from the school, also ask for general assistance and they will be more then happy to help you.
Some interesting things that I've noticed. I bought my house a few years ago. It was built in 1890. The house is only on it's third owner (me). It is in pretty nice shape considering how old it is. As long as you keep up with the maintance on an old house it will last a very long time.
Find a house that is older and has had a relatively low number of owners. This tells you they were in the house taking care of it all along if it still looks good.
Once in your house be pro-active... What I mean is actively look for problems or potential problems that you can fix. For example, fix that small crack in the steps before it ruins the whole steps. Keep your wood painted, and repaint every few years as needed.
My house is withstanding the test of time, and when originally built had no electrictity, and was heated with fires. Then it was updated with gas lighting, and again with electricity.
One interesting thing about my house is the amount of labor that went into building it. There was no such thing as drywall, which is fairly easy to put up. The walls are amazing if you ever need to take one down, there are inch wide boards with only a quater inch sepearting them, that run all thru the walls to hold up the old plaster walls.
You would pay thru the roof to have a crew of people hammer each one of these boards in, but when my house was built cheap immigrant laber was everywhere, and it was used / abused. Good luck recreating my house in it's exact for for under $300,000 in labor alone!
And I think that's why old houses do seem to last forever. The amount of skilled labor that was put into it, at such a cheap cost.
Hey anyone know if this version of X fixed the mouse problems for Quake 3? I know it's a long shot, but I have not been able to upgrade X in a long time, because everytime I do I can't play quake 3. The mouse simply binds to the upper left hand corner and doesn't move.
Anyone who upgraded see it fixed? Or know of a fix?
For those of you wondering, this only works for apps that you are currently writing. It isn't going to work for just any windows app, but it's still kinda neat.

If you just signed up for a new sprint pcs cell phone I can get you a $10 rebate. Email me at jchawk@ my website (tr0n.com) that's a zero in tr0n.
I'm sorry but this is bullshit, something like this would be major news especially considering that Sony is a publicly traded company and would have been obligated to inform it's investors that it was being sued.
Sorry guys, no news here move along, it's bullshit.
Which is exactly why I don't buy cd's anymore. I haven't purchased a cd in over 2 years. The last one I bought was by a band called Clutch, and I bought it from their website.
What's next, a bill that will force us to go to the movies once a week?
I don't mean to sound like a troll, but for christ sake this is absolutely rediculious, why are we letting the enterainment industry push us around? We as an industry (computers) are *way* bigger then them.:-(
Well this is all well and good, but lets keep in mind that dsl is expensive to roll-out, what is motivating the company I work for to go out and purchase this *new* wonderful equipment which is going to require upgrades at least in the DSLAM's / ATM switches, nothing is just "hook it in and it works", ever.
It's wonderful that they claim these super fast speeds, but what's the point right now? My company already has equipment in place to offer a few megabit to the home user, but we don't currently offer speeds faster then 768/768. Why? Because the demand isn't there, period. A few geeks here and there, or maybe a business or two, but most business that need something faster then 768 symetric are going to go with another dedicated telco soltion such as a T-1, or a DS3.
I'm happy that we have these wonderful systems, that promise super fast bandwidth, and I'm not saying I don't believe the speeds, I'm just skeptical that we're going to see them hitting the market anytime soon because phone companies aren't eager to roll them out, keep in mind they're all still trying to re-coup the costs to roll out the network in the first place.
Look what you did.

Well forget about a manned missioned to mars, NASA just spent the last of it's budget on bandwidth.
I hate spam, and thus run my own mail server and employ various spam filtering / blocking techniques. The reason I do this is because I hate spam and for a long time had no other choice but to deal with it because of my long time email address with my local isp (been with them forever). I had asked about spam filtering and all I was told was "Configure outlook express to block senders. .."
Now the average joe is not in the position to run a mail server and deal with spam in the many ways that some slashdotters can. . . Leading to my question. ..
Would you or better your mother pay a small monthly fee to have an email account that was free or almost free from spam? Employing such techniques as spam assassin or better something like tmda (tmda works like this, you add people you want email from to a whitelist, those not on your list can email you but they get a message which they must respond to be added to your white list).
Would you be willing to pay $5 a month, $10? How concerned is the average person with spam? Or are they just use to it and are willing to click delete over and over again.
Pncbank has support mozilla for a while now, after reading the quickie about captial one, I sent them a nice email.
"I just wanted to write you guys to say thank you for supporting the Mozilla web browser. I appricate a company that recognizes and encourages my right to choose a different web browser other then Internet Explorer.
Keep up the good work, and please continue to support our right to choose. As long as you continue doing what you are doing I will continue to be your customer!
You guys are awesome."
Maybe if anyone else uses Pncbank you can send them an email too.
Quoting the original poster - "it will set a large and potentially unstoppable precedent for caps all around the country"
You simply can't make a statement like this, because this move is going to piss people off and thus drive people away from AT&T. There is always going to be a player that will move in to fill this niche market and pick these people up with a better service that meets their needs.
It looks like in order to cause the crash you have have remote management enabled. Why on earth you would allow your router to be configured from outside on the internet boggles my mind. I would assume that this feature would be disabled by default, but then again who knows. I've owned a few cheap routers before and in order to use remote management you had to be connecting from an internal ip address, along with not coming through the wan port.
Really nothing to do about wireless networks, but more about this submitted article.
If you are submitting your own site to slashdot, this is how you should do it! Have a couple mirrors handy so we can actually take a look at what you posted.
Kudos to this guy! There really should be some kinda of prize.:-) Well there is the bandwidth bill I suppose. hehe
God 4 comments and it's slashdotted already!
Don't you guys ever go out? I know we're geeks and all but you could leave the house once in a while and do something on a FRIDAY NIGHT!?!??!
Isn't there a lanparty you should be at.
Damn it you are screwing the guys who have to work the graveyard shift!
What am I supposed to do now? Work...?

All this talk of stool... I'm almost tempted to post a link to that Goatse guy. :-P
How does Wilkes-Barre == Philly?
There two different places that happen to be in the same state.
Pass me some of what the poster was smoking.

I'm running all the latest updates, you have to be anymore because of the Punk Buster software.
Yeah, I'm using gpm, and letting X draw the mouse from that.
I'm running debian. Please if you have any suggestions or have seen this before let me know, because I would love to be able to upgrade.

Just going by some numbers I found on yahoo finance, we as an industry are indeed bigger. Just look at some numbers, taking the market captial -
Computer Hardware / Software - Total Market Cap = 893.9 billion.
Media Industry = 270 billion.
We are over 3x's bigger, there is no reason we should be pushed around.

I use mozilla all the time, and I'd be more interested in them fixing the bug in mozilla that causes it close when doing searches on ebay.
I constantly have to open another browser, in order to use ebay.
Anyone else have this problem?
